The Buzz Cut + Beard Combo Datasheet

This is by far one of the most underrated assets a man can have for himself.

This hair combo is
  • Masculine and sexy looking.
  • Easy to upkeep.
  • Good on saving you thousands (yes, thousands) of dollars throughout your life.
Allow me to briefly prove these three points first before getting into the nitty gritty and how-to's.

1.) It's masculine and sexy looking.

Let photo evidence speak for itself.

[Image: tumblr_n0hu7vt3d_U1rq47f7o1_500.jpg][Image: buzz_cut_hairstyles_min_jpg_bb3c18.jpg][Image: 1440724297572.png][Image: number_1_buzz_with_beard.jpg][Image: b02d1cb3fa9c0af01e1a68f7a26c26c0.jpg]

2.) It's easy to upkeep / maintain.

This is something I'll go more into detail with in a bit. Buzzcuts and beards are easy as hell to cut and trim yourself. A monkey could do it.

3.) It's good on saving you tons of cash throughout your life.

...and as I said above, thousands.

Back when I was in high school and mommy and daddy were paying for my haircuts, I would get one about once a month. Then when I went off to college I needed to start paying for them myself. I quickly realized how awful this was on my bank account, and it was then when I searched for an alternative and discovered the joys of buzzuts.

Let's do the math. Joe gets a haircut once a month. (This is generous - Many men get a cut more often.) Joe's haircuts, with a tip unless he wants to feel like an asshole, estimate at $20. (Again, this is generous considering some men spend much more.)

That's $240 a year, or almost $1,000 every four years, all spent on just the hair growing out the top of Joe's head.

Fuck that shit. You're a man - Your hair doesn't need to be a work of art, so it shouldn't be a burden on your wallet.

Don't be Joe. Here's how.

---

The Buzzcut

To some it may seem simple. But once upon a time I had absolutely no idea how to give myself a buzzcut. If this is you, don't worry. It's one of the easiest skills to understand and master; plus it's idiot-proof. All you need is someone to explain it to you. Guess who that's gonna be.

You're gonna want to get an electric hair clipper. I found one at Wal-Mart for less than $10 that lasted me for more than a year. Then I bought this one on Amazon for under $25 because it was slightly more durable and had a specific guard I wanted. It's the highest rated one on Amazon. As you go up in price, the quality of the trimmer goes up (to an extent). Spend even more and you'll get expensive haircut kits that come with all sorts of brushes and combs. Fuck that shit, we just need the electric clipper and a guard. If you're spending more than $25 on your clipper, you're doing something wrong.

So guards. They look like this.

You'll throw one of these bad boys on your clipper depending on how long you want your hair to be.

Each guard has a number that is representative of how many eighths of an inch your hair length will be after it gets cut with that guard on the clippers. So cutting your hair with a one guard makes your hair 1/8" long. A seven guard makes it 7/8" long. Simple. It's helpful to know that the average human grows 1/8" of hair per week out of their scalp. That's a guard a week. So if you get a three guard haircut, it should be up to about a five guard's length after two weeks.

It's important to remember once you've started cutting that you can't mess up. This is what made me nervous and paranoid when I started out. I thought that if I held it a certain way, the length would be off or it would somehow look uneven. Nope. The guard makes this idiot-proof. As long as you attached your guard to your clippers and heard the satisfying *click* that it was attached, you really can't mess anything up.

As for the cutting itself, you'll learn as you go. Make sure you're cutting against the growth. This means you'll always be cutting towards the top of your head. So in the front you'll start at the bangs. In the back you'll start at the neck and go up. Easy to understand. Make sure you get behind your ears (it's easy to forget that) and always go over each area at least twice. The key is to listen for the sound of cutting. Once you stop hearing that sound on the second or third swoop through, you'll know you got it all.

It may seem goofy cutting the hair on the back of your head, as you cannot see it. You could start off by using a double mirror, but overall you'll get used to this part. It helps to take a picture afterward of the back of your head to make sure you didn't miss any spots.

Simple as that. I always like to do this in my bathroom in front of a mirror with no shirt on and right afterwards hop in the shower to clean all the loose hair off my scalp and shoulders. You can clean up the hair on the floor after your shower with a broom, but I find it the easiest if you have a small vacuum to do it that way instead.

How often you give yourself a haircut is up to you. Generally, the shorter you're cutting it, the more frequent you'll want to cut it since hair growth will be more noticeable. (That is, if you want to keep a consistent look, which is usually preferable.) I have a half guard cut (1/16") and I go every three days. That may sound surprising to some, but once you've got it down it all takes maybe 5-7 minutes.

The Beard

Ironically, I'm probably the last person who should be speaking proudly and knowledgeably on beards. Not only does my current part-time summer job force me to have a clean baby face, but I've always had inferior genetics that give me a hell of a time growing a full beard. Regardless, it's not as bad as what I make it out to be. (And I'm already counting down the days when I can bring the beard back into my life at the end of summer.)

Get an electric beard trimmer. Again, I use the highest rated one on Amazon (only $15), but really any of them will do. And once again, it's not necessary to drop a boatload of cash on one of these.

Beard trimmers will come with a plastic attachment which will act as your guard, similar to the ones on hair clippers. The only difference is that there will more than likely only be one guard attachment, so the length will be adjustable.

Most beard trimmers will go by millimeters instead of inches. Remember that 1/8 of an inch = about 3 millimeters. So if you're trying to make your beard the same length as your buzzcut which is a two guard, you'd want to trim it at 6mm.

Trimming, itself, is even easier and quicker than cutting your hair, mainly because your beard covers less space but also because you can actually see all of your beard hair as opposed to a good chunk of your scalp hair being in the back of your head. Cut against the hair growth, go over each area 2-3 times to make sure you don't miss anything, and obviously do it over a sink and in front of a mirror. If you have a thicker beard, you'll also want to do this before your shower so that you can efficiently clean off the excess trimmed hair that gets stuck in your beard.

In addition, you'll want to traditionally shave your neck hair. That is, unless you feel that your calling is to be a neckbeard. Generally, the cutoff point between your face and your neck is the imaginary vertical line just above the Adam's apple.

And once again, the frequency of your trimming is up to you. I would go no less frequent than once every three days, but that's up to you.

General Rules To Follow

1.) Your scalp hair shouldn't be longer than your beard hair. Your beard should be either longer/thicker than your scalp hair or the same length as it. Never shorter.

2.) You should go no higher than a three guard on your buzzcut. Higher than a three is when it begins to look less like a buzzcut and more like normal, thicker hair. You're wanting to go with a short hair look.

3.) The entirety of your scalp hair should be the same length and the entirety of your beard hair should be the same length. For example, let's say you're going with 1/8" on the scalp and 5mm on the beard. The entirety of your scalp should be 1/8". Don't make the sides shorter. The entirety of your beard should be 5mm. No short sideburns with a longer goatee

4.) Don't shave your scalp hair. Alternatively you could do a no guard buzzcut, but I would advise on not shaving up there for maximum results. The point of this style is little effort, short hair on the top, but still some hair.

5.) Take care of any obtrusive facial features first. When I was growing up, I always thought I had a bump on the top of my head. As I started buzzing my hair, I realized that it was actually a mole. Eventually I wanted to go down to a one guard, but I couldn't do that without pricking my mole while cutting. Plus the shorter my hair was, the more visible the mole was. People saw it and asked what the hell it was. It looked unnatural and unattractive. So I got it removed. (Your insurance should cover it if you specify that it hurts when getting a haircut.) Now I have a small, less noticeable scar in place of it, which is a ton better than the mole and I even have people excitedly ask why I have one. Scars give off a mysterious vibe which can be to your benefit. But I digress.

Potential Problems

There are two main problems that a person can have that, in their mind at least, could prevent them from pulling off this look.

You have a receding hairline.

Most men experience this with age, but in some cases a handful of factors such as genetics and a bad diet can accelerate this into happening much sooner.

Hair loss can be an annoying aspect, but think of buzzing your hair as a way of embracing it. Bear with me here. Some look at men with receding hairlines who gel their hair to disguise it, an all-too common look, as being in denial about their hair. If you buzz it, you're being up front about it.

If you own up to your hair loss, it can actually make others perceive you better, and you'll even feel better about yourself. And if you have good muscle tone, the combination of your receded hairline buzzcut plus your toned body actually gives off a mature, masculine look.

For example, look at Dwayne Johnson. Do you think he looks ugly?

[Image: Dwayne_Johnson_at_the_2009_Tribeca_Film_Festival.jpg]

Nobody would look at a guy like this, fame aside, and think 'He doesn't look attractive.

Alternatively, you could look into products that fix hair loss, of which I know next to nothing about as I've never had to use them.

My point being: If you have a receding hairline, this look can still be for you.

You have shitty facial hair.

This is the one I struggle with. And let me tell you, it's not as bad as it seems.

This usually applies for men such as myself who are younger. Of course some men my age have had easy full beards for years, but my age plus my genetics prevent me from being able to grow a ZZ Top beard in two days as it seems with many of my acquaintances.

The best thing I can tell you for this is to slowly grow your beard evenly over time. What I mean is this: Let's say you want to get up to a 5mm beard but your hair grows in unevenly. Trim your beard at 1mm for 1-2 weeks, then at 2mm for the next couple weeks, etc. Slowly work your way up to the length you want to be at. This is so that the areas that are patchy have time to grow in evenly.

Another way to embrace this factor is just to accept the fact that your beard should always be of a shorter length, or at least until you age a few more years.

Additional Benefits

The major benefits of this look are the three I listed above, but rest assured that there are many more reasons why you should switch to this style if you need further convincing.

No more trips to the barber shop. It really is a huge burden on your day. You realize you need a haircut. You go out of your way to make a special trip there. Put your name in. Wait. Tell them specifically what you want. Get your hair cut while forcing awkward conversation with the person doing it, usually a fat woman. They never seem to do it as good as your last one. Pay (with tip). Drive home. Now you have to make the decision of either going the whole day having a scratchy neck or taking a second shower of the day and changing shirts, even though you already liked the one you were in. It's not worth it.

Say goodbye to shampoo. If you have a one guard buzzcut or shorter, don't ever buy shampoo again. Just wash the top of your head like you do the rest of your body, with soap.

Your hair doesn't act as a mop. If you don't have a buzzcut, your hair loves to soak in water, whether it be rainy day, you've taken a swim or you just got out of the shower. And it's always a bitch to dry up. Sometimes you can't since you don't have a towel on you all the time. Water drips on your shoulders and down from that. This is especially not good if you're going to work or a meeting.

It can't be messed up. Unlike before, it's impossible to mess up your hair. I used to always get my hair messed up, whether I just woke up, I took off a hat or one of my buddies was dicking around and messed it up for me. Then I'd have to fix it. I no longer own a comb or a brush or anything like that. It's one less thing to worry about fixing to look nice.

Women will love to feel your hair. I've had many women feel my hair and beard unprovoked. My hair because it's short, different and feels nice (especially 24 hours after a cut) and my beard because what straight woman doesn't want to feel up one. This all happens while I grin at the men with prepped up gelled hair standing in the corner pouting. "Well uhh, you can't run your hands through my hair because it'll get messed up and make your hands greasy." Pssh. Sad!

Getting lice is next to impossible. This is obviously more relevant the shorter it is. You simply can't get lice if you have a one guard or less.

Nothing to pull on. For men who care about fighting and self defense, having a buzzcut is one thing that is to your advantage. Having long hair makes you a target of hair pulling from weak cheap shotters (look up 'Hood Cat Fights' on YouTube). This is one of the reasons they make (or at least strongly encourage) male police officers, military officers and FBI agents get a buzzcut or shave their head bald.

No after shave / cuts. Every man knows what I'm talking about here. This is no longer the case if you're trimming your beard.

Spend less on razors and shaving cream. Your trimmer will last you next to forever. You can use it as many times as you want for free. The only area you'll be traditionally shaving is your neck. This means that one razor head and one bottle of shaving cream could almost last you an entire year. (You could even trim your neck with your trimmer at no guard. I've found that it doesn't work as well, but it may for you.)

Conclusion

In the world we live in today, it's important to stand out with a unique appearance. In a society dominated by glasses, gelled hair and kempt clean or goatee faces, the amount of men who use this hairstyle is very few. And it's highly convenient that it's easy, masculine and free.

I covered the basics, but PM me if you have any further questions. For the most part, everything should be easy to understand as you go about doing it. It's very straight forward and very simple.

As with all styles, it greatly enhances it if you are buff. Always make sure you're putting lifting and achieving good muscle tone over choosing the best style, as this is far more important. Someone from the forum once told me that if you are buff, you can pull off any style. Having said that, I strongly believe that if you are buff, you should adopt this hairstyle to maximize your attractiveness.

I'll end with quotes from red pill rappers with this same hairstyle, cause high energy or die energy.

I just did it last week. I have also receding hairline at 29 and I've been little bit in denial about it for long time. Last friday just went to the barber shop and had second shortest buzz cut. Feels very liberating and I do look good with it.

Only certain faces can pull this off the way Drake and The Rock can. One feature out of place (weird head shape, big ears, face not masculine enough, lighter skin tone etc) and it's game over for this style. That's why it's not as common as you think it should be. I rocked a buzz cut for years and it was amazingly convenient, but the fact is 99% of men look better with hair, even if it's only short hair.

Correct. This style of cut (not always a buzz-cut, but a high & tight with a bush-ranger beard) also tends to be the calling card of hipster faggots world-wide - even if it does provide them with a modicum of masculinity compared to any other style.

It's also not only niche in terms of look and head/face-shape, but isn't practical for a lot of guys working in corporate/professional fields.

Watermelon salesmen like Drake (elevated arms as pictured) - it kind of adds to the whole poseur/gangster image, so no doubt it's working for him.

Like anything I guess, don't pander to fashion just because everyone else is jumping on the bandwagon, but rather, exploit your strengths and tailor your look in accordance with what works best personally.

You didn't bring up THE 50 Cent and instead post up all these posers for this look? Come on man. And co-signed that it only works for a select few, and it won't work unless you're sufficiently jacked.

I rock this look pretty often, definitely has a more masculine vibe to it, it's kind of funny but I think I look a lot like the guy in the second picture.

This looks a lot better if you have a more rugged looking face, thick jaw and head. The bigger you are the better it looks too.

I think everybody should try it but it's not the look for pretty boys.

I cosign the look, but I'm in the weird shaped head camp so I can only go so low. But I've been cutting my own hair since I was a teen, getting better results than with a barber. Pro tip, stand in the shower and do the cutting, that cuts down clean up time.

I shaved my head shaolin style for 7 years but now I do a mid bald fade to a #3 with a line up, something like what khaled has in that photo. Its higher maintenance but more distinguished in my opinion. Can't pull off a beard unfortunately. Are you guys lining up and bigen dying your beards like Drake? That could get high maintenance I would imagine.

Also it looks better if you have smaller ears that are tapered to the side of your head and aren't all loopy.

My thing is I kinda have big ears (though they don't stick out) and going close shave like this would really accentuate that.

I've been doing this for years. I've been to a barber once in over a decade. As a bonus, I have my lady friends do the buzz cut for me. It's kind of an intimate act that gets her closer to me.

My avatar is a recent photo.

The eye patch - despite the reason it's necessary - just adds to the look.

I started cutting my own hair a while back. I've settled on using a #6 guard most of the time. I still have some trouble getting it even on a couple spots, it usually takes me a couple of tries with washing my hair in between. Several years ago I kept my head shaved for several months (cancer), but it was too much work and the velcro effect with my pillow when sleeping was annoying.

Sometimes I let my beard grow out, but since it is solid grey and my hair isn't, it makes me look a lot older. It was impressive, but I decided I wanted a change and I look at least 10 years younger without it.

I think it looks good on any guy.

I knew guys who said that only "certain" types of guys can pull it off and that's not the case.

I used to say, "nah I dont have a gangster face. I tried it anyway and loved it. Kept this style since.

I'd like to hear some opinions on the type of hairline to keep with this cut.

Do you guys keep it natural or have it lined up?

Ive been getting a the latter for the last few months and am thinking of switching to a more natural look lately. Also probably growing out the top to about an inch for a more of a caesar cut look with the sides and back still entirely buzzed to a zero.

I've always rocked a buzz cut my whole life but when I actually got a little older I could rock a full on beard. I have been complimented on it many times, rocked my buzzcut/beard for a photoshoot I did for H&M and more. I love it because its EXTREMELY low maintenance. I do however rock beard oils and the such to keep it nice/soft for when I am up and close with a woman, she is stroking my beard or for when I go down on them an it doesn't hurt them as much. I 100% endorse a beard and a buzzcut combo. Some people can't rock it and I understand that but there are variants you can rock. I for example don't do 1 whole size on my head. I like to do 3/4" on top then 1/2" on sides then smaller around ears/sideburns till it runs into my beard where it gets longer(aka tapering it). But manage your beard, know where to shave on your neck so your not a neckbeard.

I've sported the buzz and beard for close to ten years now, due to a receding hairline (I'm 27 and it started receding at 15-16 - tough shit, bitch!)

Yesterday was the first time I used no guard, and man I love it. Simplifies everything. Then 7-9 mm guard for the beard.

I'm skinny as hell right now due to sickness but it doesn't matter, that's gonna change.

Anyway, the hair routine is down to a few minutes compared with the previous routine of checking the mirror all the time, due to using different lengths on sides and top. That shit takes more time than you think.

Good post but there's some things i'd point out.

1. Don't cheap out on the clipper. For $70 you can get the same clipper found at barber shops(Oster fast feed).

2. The clipper guard length is going to be determined by your head shape. Some guys cannot pull off a #3 up top and it will look awful because their skull. For example Ryan Gosling looks goofy as hell with a tight buzz because his optical bone sticks out(back of his head) giving off a unbalanced look.
[Image: gosling_ryan_believer_still_lrg.jpg] [Image: AgitatedRightDarklingbeetle-mobile.jpg]

This is an extreme example but Gosling would need to have some kind buzz cut inspired look with at least a #5 uptop to balance it out but ultimately his best look is below. The problem is once you start to use clipper guards above 3 then you are correct it starts morphing out of a buzz cut and that essentially makes the hair much more difficult because you need to use different guards to fade the cut from the top to bottom. With that said using higher guards like a #5 can still give off a buzz cut look if your skull is shaped oddly. I would recommend going to a barber though if that is the case.

It doesn't matter much IMO. If he looked ugly because of his occipital bun, he wouldn't get the role (He's playing an alpha heart-throb)

Have you ever heard (or read) a woman saying: "OMG Gosling looked ugly because of his occipital bun". It's unusual, but so are green eyes.

The point is it's not the optimal look on Gosling. Thats why Gosling hasn't had a buzz cut in almost 15 years. His appeal among women also sky rocketed for both the roles and him improving his looks over the years. Thats what most men should be doing, maximize what you have.

Also, the angle of that rear protrusion matches the angle of his nose.
