Interesting thread. Reminds me of a theory I had awhile back that a guy can only afford to have one anti-social hobby and if your job is anti-social and requires long hours then even that one hobby may be a detriment to your sex life depending on how involved it is.

I don't agree with the thread, but I definitely agree with this.

Knowledge workers buy and large spend hours in front of computers. At-work internet use, social media should tell people how badly they want to connect, but they're held back by real barriers.

And the people who are primarily on in front of a screen, often times they were comfortable with that from early on. Those tendencies to be able to sit still and watch, or interact electronically were identified, encouraged, and rewarded. That was to the detriment of learning social skills.

My theory about our society is that
- parents and family
- friends
- neighbors
- strangers
- government figures like cops, politicians, coaches, and teachers
- religion and most popular culture

All work together to make sure that you learn to conform.

Conformity is so important that it goes beyond behavior that a person can control, to things that they can't control.

"Look at him, he looks like trouble. "

"I try to conform, but they don't believe me, they won't allow me..."

What the world shows us, is that knowing how to conform, and getting people to want to conform, is the key to power, money, respect, fame...etc.

Indeed, the better a society is at following rules, the more successful the society is. And some sets of rules work better than others.

This system works for the mass, but fails for individuals.

How do you learn game or leadership when you spend your time looking at a screen not interacting with people at work, then come home and binge watch Dr. Who, while ordering a pizza. You just show up to the club and turn it on? New guys expect a Tinder date to just want to bang because they're at the same bar?

When you do talk, it's only your co-workers, close friends, and family. When's the last time most people sat down to break bread with the people they know the best.

If nerdy hobbies bring you together with people,, strangers especially, it's helpful for game.

Bump to an old thread, but I think about this idea of "conformity" a lot. I was sold on "non-conformity" by a bunch of hippie-ass teachers back in school, and as much as I think following mainstream society's dictums is pretty stupid, I actually think my life would have turned out a lot better if I had been more conformist in nature in my teens. A lot of the "doing my own thing" cut me off from building good long-term social crews, and obviously from more success with girls (who are attracted by contrast game and "charming rogues" but turned off by someone who has no alignment with social convention). It would not have hurt to take e.g. dressing well more seriously and learned a bit more how to BS my way through my social circles.

Plus I realized the "non-conformist" crew turned out to be a bunch of conspiracy theorists not to mention damaged people. The shit you don't know until it's too late.

Doing art and showing it at a gallery is fairly cool. As someone mentioned in one of the older posts above, there is an art scene that can be a source of social circle game, as well as the general coolness of being an artist.

Speaking of hobbies, I have been thinking of this for a while. Lets say you were a world class Curling player. Like you ve been to the olympics for your country. Could you leverage your dedication and skill in one of the least watched and entertaining sports into poon? For example, if you were an olympian sprinter, girls would be attracted to your dedication and status. But a gold medalist curler? Thoughts?

Not sure if you're still around Cortés, but the Olympics are notorious for the rampant sexcapades that go on. You're surrounded by literally the fittest people in the world, you've probably spent your whole life training and haven't experienced a lot of socializing, and there are people of every nationality and ethnicity to sample. You could probably be an Olympian in ping pong and still slay. Especially if you stroll around with a medal around your neck it should be as easy as it gets. Hell, you could probably infiltrate the Olympic Village wearing a track suit with some color scheme that looks vaguely like a national flag and that might be good enough. Maybe some of our South Korean brothers should give it a try in a few weeks and report back. The answer to your question is a resounding yes so work on your archery, marksmanship, or curling skills and sample the bounty.
