The Moral Animal evolutionary psychology book review

Probably the best book I've read explaining the psychological differences which affect the modern dating scene.

Some key pointers:

1. Much of the chaos in the modern dating world is essentially the result of man tampering with nature; humans even in the 21st century are biologically more or less the same as hunter-gatherers who live in stone age tribes, but modern civilization has removed us from our natural habitat.

2. Traditionally men with alpha traits, those who were most courageous and worthy of leadership were also the best providers, which is why these traits are attractive to women. The modern world has in some ways "leveled the playing field" so that now the mild-mannered accountant may have more wealth than the Green Beret sergeant, but biological attraction hasn't change; hence the dynamic of women marrying beta providers but having affairs with "alpha" bad boys has increased dramatically.

3. Likewise in small hunter-gatherer tribes there was a natural "karma" system in check to prevent exploitation by both sexes. A man who used women for sex but didn't provide was often a target for revenge by a father or husband of the woman; and a woman who cheated or played men would quickly gain a reputation as a whore.

Modern civilization and technology and our high population has essentially removed this natural karma effect, there is now far less natural consequence for cheating or philandering on the part of both sexes.

I read this book a few years ago and yes, I agree, it gives very good insight into human behavior. If I recall it also explains why we have institutions such as marriage (short version: so a few high value men don't get all the women, creating a situation like we see in some middle eastern and African countries today, and polygamous sects) and partly explains mental illness (because our hunter-gatherer brains did not evolve to live in the kind of society we find ourselves in today). Its very red pill, to be honest, and covers some of the topics often discussed on ROK.

I think there's also a nice explanation of the Madonna/Whore strategies that women use, although there are elements of either strategies within every women. Attractive women and those brought up in wholesome environments where she has seen evidence and applications of her beauty will typically be serial monogamists aiming for the very best men. They understand the importance of devoted chaste reputation that the echelons of men they are after want. These women tend to be the 9s and 10s that always seem unavailable locked up in a LTR. On
the other hand lesser attractive women and those brought up in poverty tend to have an opposite mating strategy. They are much looser and blatantly signal their sexuality. These women know they're unable to match other women in terms of looks or class and thus unable to secure alpha males for themselves. Instead these women compromise and seduce their lesser choice: The beta males. For the lesser woman, or the insecure women she obtains resources through quantity rather than quality.

I'm sure I've butchered this point but the book was really eye opening here. Its amazing how much you can read into someone's sexual strategy and personality by analyzing their sexual prospects.
