Master the Credit Game: Improve Your Credit and Pay Off Debt Datasheet

Can you scan your actual paper reports, or take a screen grab of them and black out any account numbers or personally identifiable information, then attach it to a reply here? Did you get your reports through annualcreditreport.com, and if so, how long ago?

Quick necro-bump. Back when I was attempting to build my credit due to lack of real need for credit as well as some misinformed choices, I happened to talk with some staff at my credit union (credit unions are by and large VASTLY superior to banks) and I found out that for their members they report a secured credit card as an unsecured card.

Seeing as having money to pay for things has never been a huge problem, I plunked down a vastly higher amount for a secured card than I could've been qualified for on an unsecured card.

My credit benefited nicely and I was even further convinced that banks are crap compared to your average credit union.

Regarding the personal loan, do you have any debt currently? If so, what percentage interest rate is it at? How does that compare to the loan offered by Discover?

I have both Discover It and Chase Freedom cards. Both are good bets for long-term cash back, with both rotating categories and bonus offers they give from time to time. How long ago did you apply for the Chase Freedom card? Also, how many total credit accounts do you have? How many times have you applied for credit in the last two years?

I'm not sure how things are lately, but in the not too distant past (10+) years ago, Discover was one to avoid. Back then they were part of the Sears Financial Network, which had a reputation for being very strict about missed payments and other derogatory information. If you missed a payment on Discover it would almost instantly show up on the credit reports.

They've been sold a few times since then, but even so, nobody takes it compared to the others. Not seeing a huge reason to have it if you're already squared away, credit wise.

Not when it comes to security they aren't.

While they have their advantages, you shouldn't stay in a credit union any longer than you have to - they are a hackers paradise and even physically they are not as secure as a bank (robbery statistics bear this out).

Given fee-free everything nowadays and low interest rates making profit margins thinner than ever as they try to lure customers, lenders of all types are reluctant to spend more money on security overhead than required. Credit unions have far fewer security regulations than even a small local bank. As a result, even crummy banks are more secure than a credit union. Buyer beware.
