If You Hear "Live It Or Leave It" - Run Like Hell

Part of the red pill is that we have found out, too late for some of us, that having a well-rounded life and a diverse, interesting collection of experiences is essential to our development as men. It is essential in having a fulfilling sex life as well as having a fulfilling life overall, and leaving this world with no regrets.

We will encounter people who want to deny us this well-rounded life throughout our lives. You will often hear, in your work as well as in your hobbies, religion, social functions, etc., platitudes like "dedicate your life to this, man", "you aren't sincere about this unless you really live it and have true passion for it" and "live it or leave it." You should run like hell every time you hear this and don't look back. These are people who want to steal your time and your youth from you for their own gain. This is literally the technique that cult leaders use. It especially works on directionless, impressionable, emotionally fragile young people who believe that there isn't much to their lives and who haven't realized that their life is the sum total of what they do. Make them think your scene/cause/religion/career/whatever is all there is and all there ever will be to life for them, and question their sincerity/integrity/whatever if they don't dedicate all of their time, youth, and energy to it and forego having a well-rounded life. It's one of the most insidious forms of cultural Marxism there is.

This is especially true for a music scene. A lot of small, tight-knit niche underground music scenes are full of these kinds of cult-like platitudes, particularly the hardcore and punk scenes. Every other band will have some variation of "dedicate your life to this scene, maaaaan" and "live it or leave it" - the latter has even been a t-shirt slogan for various different bands. A music scene is the most silly and inconsequential thing to dedicate your time and youth to. Don't do it. The ones who are smart aren't. They are seeing the bands they want to see, going to the shows they want to go to, maybe being in a band for fun themselves, and developing their lives in other ways as well. These music scenes are full of cultural Marxist ideas and the application of "live it or leave it" in these scenes are there for the purpose of graduating its more naive members into "activism" where they dedicate even more of their youth to the spread of cultural Marxist ideas, or even just preparing them for a corporate job where they will hear similar platitudes.

Some of you will hear it at your job too. It will be the justification they use to overwork and underpay you, keep you there for most of your waking hours, and suck the life out of you at the expense of your well-roundedness and development. "You gotta have passion for this or don't do it", "live it or leave it." More cult-like platitudes. They will use you and then move on after they burn you out. Run like hell from them and find a job that lets you go home at a reasonable hour and live like a human being. Putting that kind of work in for anyone else other than yourself is a dead end.

Maybe the only place where "live it or leave it" actually applies is your own business. This is something you genuinely do have to live or leave, because it's something you build from the ground up. Having your own business being a "live or leave" situation gets a pass from me because it's something you do for yourself and is therefore part of your development, and is necessary due to the nature of owning a business.

Otherwise, there is absolutely no need to "live it or leave it" in most life situations. Be well-rounded. Have a variety of different experiences. And for heaven's sake, study the behavior of cults and cult leaders and run like hell from anyone you hear cult-like platitudes from. They won't pick up the pieces when you wake up one day with your youth gone, no life experiences, no social skills, no job skills, and no nothing else full of regrets and having missed out on life because you "dedicated your life to this maaaan" and "lived it instead of leaving it." No matter who it is, you'll be left on your own and they'll move on to the next one and burn him out. Run like hell and don't look back.

This is, of course, preaching to the choir for most red pill men, but, there may be some young impressionable people lurking on this forum and reading this post, and, frankly, everyone needs to know cult-like platitudes when they hear them.

I've never heard anyone say that. What's the matter?

I have never heard this. "love it or leave it" was an expression used for Vietnam protestors in the 60s. Maybe it is a derivative.

It is a derivative.

Just a couple examples but the mentality is out there.

I haven't heard the phrase expressed like that, but I understand what he's getting at.

The phrase is often used when people don't find success in something they try and naturally ask themselves "Hold on - why the fuck am I doing this?" Basically, "live it or leave it" is a demand by others in that circle to double down. It's a demand that you stop exercising your critical faculties about why you're not happy or not making money in whatever you're doing, and suggesting that the problem isn't the system or the job or the idiot managing you, but rather, that it's you.

Your time on this planet is finite. And often much shorter than you assume it's going to be. Did you not think all those car crash victims, military casualties, heart attack victims, or cancer patients believed they were going to die in their sleep at age 85 or so?

"Love it or leave it" in the right context is therefore actually a worthwhile aphorism to remember. If you are not enjoying what you're doing, if it does not bring you happiness or does not bring you appreciably closer to a realistic goal which will make you happy, then you do need to ask yourself seriously why you're doing it.

The mistake is to be shamed into continuing with something that is not working for you by an asshole who accuses you of being insincere because you're not screaming with enthusiasm over a system that's not working. That's how "love it or leave it" is used dishonestly against you. It is trying to say that there's something wrong with you because you haven't gone all-in with whatever it is you're doing.

I'm not saying you shouldn't pursue your passion. But at the same time, be wary of what your passion will cost you. Those mindblowingly passionate to the point of a lifelong dedication to a particular subject are often artists -- musical, writing, or pictorial -- and therefore to be pitied. The biographies of the great, obsessed artists are littered with mental illness, drug abuse, failed relationships, broken marriages, suicide, bankruptcy. As we've seen with Prince most recently, money does not cure any of these problems for this sort of gifted person. And great artists are invariably only determined "great" posthumously; even Shakespeare was only really recognised for his genius centuries after his death in his mid-forties. As said - there is a certain kind of person who really is not truly capable of happiness outside their aesthetic passion, or their particular faith, or serving in a large corporation ... but they're rare sorts of people and invariably not the sort of person you really want to hang out with. Be wary of anyone who would hold up an obsessive as someone whose life you would want to emulate.

Put it another way. Stephen King, limpwristed liberal though he is, made one observation which I wish all parents would understand: he knew it was time to stop pushing music lessons on his kid when the kid stopped playing the instrument outside of designated practice times. If you're doing something you don't have a passion for, stop throwing good money after bad in pursuing it beyond the minimum, and go and find something that you are passionate about. Don't mistake being good at something for being a passion or a career.

These are generally the same kind of assholes who tell you to "lean in".

They'll say it has nothing to do with overtime or whatever, but if I interpret it correctly, it means that you have to have the same relationship with your job that a priest does with God.

If you're not thinking about it all the time you're not trying hard enough.

Gee, I wonder why 1/4 of all women are on depression meds.

Yes, its bait set by people who are invested (not necessarily successful or dominant) in a certain field. It's similar to other crab bucket psychological traps that run along the lines of 'This is important to me, so it should be to you too. Why invest energy or focus elsewhere when this is where its at?'

'If the person questioning my life choice finds greater happiness elsewhere it might mean my time was wasted and meaningless'

On top of that, for the people who are established and dominant in the field it can be like recruiting members for the bottom of the pyramid in a multi-level marketing ponzi scheme.

This. Specifically, Amway - which only avoids being a ponzi scheme by virtue of it having very, very good lawyers. Amway will constantly push its lowest level to work their guts out in the hope that they'll magically figure out how to make "the system" work. It doesn't - except for those already at the top.

I was going to be a music producer before I made changes in my life choices(Found ROK at 17 about 2 years ago)

I worked at a studio and spent time with musicians. They were all losers and always rambled on about their "passion".

Mental illness and drugs+fanaticism is a helluva combo.
