Northern Queensland(Cairns & Townsville, Australia) Info/Datasheet

Hey All,

Would anyone have anything to share on general info on Northern Queensland especially the cities Cairns and Townsville for practising game as well as other aspects such as logistics and safety? Heard Townsville is a cockfest because of the Army base there, can someone confirm this? Not much information on available on Cairns though. Am thinking of hitting up either or both of these places if possible.

Thanks.

Thread title should have a question mark. I thought I was going to learn how to wrestle crocs and buffalo.

Should have but I cant change it now. I am planning a trip up north to somewhere in Queensland apart from Brisbane to escape the winter down south. Am thinking Cairns if its worth it for game. Additional info on Townsville would be nice.

Gladstone, Townsville etc cockfest due to high ratio of alpha male mining dudes competing over the fat minority women in town.

You are better off going to strip club to see quality titties, or save your game for rosters off in Brisbane....

Townsville is the biggest army base in Australia...fuck that. But you never know

Cairns for the backpackers and Reef. You'd be better off spending the cash going overseas in my opinion.

Townsville is probably out then. Brisbane is definitely on the list I was saving it for later but if Cairns doesn't cut it, it is going to be Brisbane. I have met a handful of local girls from Cairns and they don't seem to have that attitude that the girls down south have but its a very small sample size. Any suggestions for logistics in the city?
Have heard that the nightlife in Cairns has scaled down a lot due to the economy. Anyone can comment?

I'm with Green-On-GO, just take a 2 weeks holiday to the SEA, why bother going a small town and limiting your options.

Good idea but my vacation is fairly short and I would like to reserve SEA for a longer stay. Is Cairns still good for foreign flags? I think somebody should write up a data sheet for this place. There are a lot of contradicting comments I have heard about it.

Another helpful information could be the demographics especially in Cairns which is further up north. What would the ratio of people with aborigine descent as opposed to european in this city?

Avoid Townsville. No point visiting outside of business or education.

I haven't gone out in Cairns in over a year but most of this info should still ring true.

Logistically, Cairns is so small that any hotel you pick will be right near all the nightlife.

Clubs:
Gilligans- By far the most popular club in Cairns. The general rule for Cairns is no matter where you go during the night, everyone will eventually end up here. So should you.
It's also the biggest backpacker's resort in Cairns, so you will see a lot a foreigners, but this rings true for every club here.
Shitty top 40 club tracks is what you'll expect.

Attic- The upstairs club at gillies. The music is more edm style (trap, dubstep, melbourne bounce etc) than gilligans is, and they try to make it upmarket with bottle service and sexy uniforms on the bartenders, and darker lighting.

Lyquid- I've never been here personally, It opened since I've gone out in Cairns, but I have friends who have been here. Probably the 'coolest' club in Cairns, with a more serious vibe, and ministry of sound-esque music. Go here if you want drugs.

Velvet Underground - A club attached to the casino. Crowd is very hit and miss, sometimes it's full at 11pm, then 20 minutes later everyone's gone. More house music style, cool layout.

Sugar Hut- Similar vibe to the attic, with a kinda asian jungle theme goin on. You'll get more locals here, but again, foreigners are everywhere in Cairns.

The Heritage - Probably the best place outside of NT to get your aboriginal flag. The black club. Make sure you order a teacup when you go there.

Society - Free entry club, sometimes has cheap drinks. Similar vibe to the rest of the clubs.

Vibe - Used to be considered a lesbian bar, but it's changed hands like 5 times since I went there so who knows.

Irish Bar- Paddy's? Molly's? I can't remember, but a cosy little dark irish pub with cheap meals and pool tables. The crowd is usually really young, with a ton of english girls at least checking it out before going elsewhere.

edit- Amost forgot the Woolshed! Definitely a backpacker bar, typical radio music. Big long wooden benches and tables next to a little dancefloor.
You'll probably have to pay entry on fri/sat nights, about $5-10 usually.

Outside of nightlife, you have to check out green island or the reef. Another tourist thing to check out is the skyrail up to kuranda, a little hippy village. There's lots of wildlife treks and tours and stuff showing off the rainforest up here.

That's all I can really remember at this time. I'm a complete noob and never thought of gaming when I was last there, so take that into consideration. Hit me with a pm if you want to meet up, I might be in the area at the same time.

Also if you're considering a small trip have you thought about Airlie Beach? The Crowd would be almost 100% backpackers, with all the clubs and restaurants on one street, and lots more options when it comes to the reef.

Good info. How far would the Airlie beach be from the Cairns CBD? Would it be better than Cairns for game?

I am assuming that the hotels you speak of are within walking distance to the night venues.

Am relatively new to the game myself, but, is it better to rent a dorm in a backpackers hotel sharing with 4/6/8 people or is it better to get a room for my self if I am going out to pull? Unfortunately, I have to balance my finances to game.

Airlie Beach is approximately 600km South of Cairns. Slightly beyond walking distance, but if you're driving from Brisbane you'll save about 8 hours travelling time.

Cairns is not a big place, so if you get a place near the Esplanade most of the nightspots will be within walking distance. If you go to Cairns and have transport check out the cable wake boarding park.

Your own room is much better for logistics.

I'll second what the other guys have said about Townsville. Not the best place to go if you're main objective is to pick up chicks. However, if you do find yourself in Townsville, find out which week the Army guys get paid and go out on a different week. A lot of the younger guys will blow all their money on the weekend they get paid and then they have nothing for the week after.

Have you tried gaming the backpacker chicks vs the aussie ones in cairns. In terms of ease what would you say?

In terms of attitude, how would the aussie ones in cairns compare to the entitled princesses we see in sydney or those Brisbane. Heard better things about the latter.

Every time I've been to Cairns I went with a girlfriend. So I can't comment on how easy it is to pick up there. Or whether backpackers are easier than Aussie chicks.

Hazaer mate ..Nothing is easy or perfect. And what one guy finds easy others find hard. For instance alot of guys here find Asian chicks easy to deal with.I find them hard to deal with but I'd never talk a dude out of going to SEA.
I find yank chicks dead easy to deal with others don't.
You can break it down to the macro level backpacker v local ,brunett v blonde, Scorpio v Taurus and so on and so on.
The only way you are going to find out is to Parachute in and go for it.

When it comes to cash your better off going to SEA but it's your money.
A 3 day bucks party on the Gold Coast is going to cost me almost the same as a 5 day bucks party in Las Vegas. No shit a $400 difference.A holiday in OZ is madness..
Thailand ( 8 hours away) even if you don't get lucky, you'll get lucky.Air Asia has damn cheap flights at the moment.Go run amok, out of your mind..
Australia is not cheap bro.

As mentioned by others here, Airlie Beach is a completely different destination. You might go there if you want to spend more time on the reef or islands because it's more easily accessible there. Though the reef is still very good in Cairns.

Single room is better, unless you're going with a mate. You can probably find one for around $50 a night, there are so many backpacker places there you can find a deal somewhere. They will all be <10 mins MAX from the clubs, more like <5min.The furthest distance betweens clubs wouldn't be more than 3 mins.

Aus vs backpackers? Backpackers are here to have a good time, and they have no-one besides their fellow travellers to judge them. Locals will have a similar attitude to other cities, but I can't comment on them because I've never lived there. Even though it's a regional area, it is in no way rural. I've personally found the girls pleasant if they weren't bogans with vocal fry.

BUT as others have said, overseas is much more worth it if you aren't going to the reef. even Bali (as much as it's shat on here) has $200 return flights from Cairns, and then you get the same nightlife experience with girls as you would in Cairns. It's also cheaper, and more adventurous and fun being in a completely different country.

The reef is definitely on my list if I come to Cairns. I have heard that non-bogan girls from Brisbane and Queensland in general are the most approachable in Aus so was thinking of confirming it for myself. I am not sure which parts of Aus you guys are from but did you guys feel the difference when you came up North?

Heard a lot about Bali.. Good to chill out but perhaps not so for game. Too many pros and semi pros running around on top of drunk lads everywhere at night. Even the backpacker chicks are more careful these days.

Just curious what the live music/band scene is like there?
Would it be a good place to be in a band playing backpacker bars etc or is it more electronic stuff?

Also how do you think setting up an off the grid home would go there?

I wasn't really into the bar/band scene so no idea how that would go. I've seen a couple bands play around, and have one friend who plays regularly at a bar, but I don't think any of that would come close to liveable wage. But again, I have no experience here.

There's a big 'hippy' community in the rainforest town of Kuranda, not far from Cairns. I think it would be very easily achievable. But obviously to be off the grid you have to be far away from the action.

thanks! Yeah not worried about the wage so much just thinking it would be cool to do a band and maybe get some action on the side from it.

From what I have been reading in the forum, are the pubs better to hit up than the clubs to get the backpacker girls who are more ready to have fun? I am assuming those high end clubs are more likely to have the locals with the attitude to boot.

If that is the case, I am thinking given constraints of the days one can go out sucn as Sun, Mon and Tue, Gilligans, Woolshed and the Irish pub are better. Opinions? Btw, a quick search tells me PJ OBriens is the name of that irish pub.

On a separate note, with regards to accommodation is it generally recommended to stay in a backpackers hostel for logistics if there is a pub on the ground floor? Has it made it any easier to pull? It seems that Gilligan's seem to have such a setup. But their single rooms cost more than double that of a typical backpackers single room. Damn.

Thanks for your comments.

This is Cairns man, there are no 'high end' clubs. Backpackers will be in any of the venues, except for maybe lyquid or velvet underground. If they aren't, simply leave and walk to any of the other numerous places in Cairns. Bars, clubs, pubs, macdonalds, woolies, it doesn't matter man, you lose at most 2 minutes visiting these places.

Thought I’d give this thread a bump.

Completed a Nth Qld road trip with some friends over Christmas.

We hit cairns-townsville-airlie beach-yapoon-bundaberg-noosa-brisbane.

For travel it is expensive but really gorgeous with great infrastructure if you’re driving. There were some great views, my favourite places were in the Daintree, some of the Great Barrier Reef sites and mission beach. However you all have TripAdvisor and lonely planet for tourist info.

From a game perspective I’ll say this about my top three locations on this route (excluding Brisbane - of which much has been written):

Cairns is a really solid weekend party destination. The combined hostel pub crawl should supply you with targets in the 6-8 range. I and a wing worked a gorgeous Swiss and Italian 18yo duo to great effect on the first night. For local talent (and there is a lot of that) head to Woolies bar. There’s only about three places in town, but I wouldn’t recommend anywhere else for game as this is the only venue that holds a descent ratio for most of the night that I saw.

Townsville had little going on when we rolled in on a Sunday evening, however I’ve been out there before on a Saturday. There is solid talent from the local university but stiff competition from the army guys that are stationed there. Cairns is an easier prospect in that regard. There’s only about three clubs all next to each other on th main strip so you kind of just naturally end up doing approaches around there. Cool place nonetheless to check out (feels like an old west outpost in some ways) but not great for game.

Airlie beach is the absolute number 1 in my books for this trip. We were there on Christmas Eve and it still went off despite everything closing at midnight. Nomads hostel has this really wide open set up around a large summer camp type ground. It is the best place to run your day Game, and the attached bar is great for warming up night game. There is only one street with bars so just follow the crowds and pick a spot based on the clientele. Generally you have plenty of girls going on the Whitsundays tours for two days, coming back to shore in the evening and going out and getting plastered with their group. Once you crack these mini social circles, or wait for them to fragment as the night continues, it’s easy enough pickings.

Noosa gets an honourable mention as I met an insane number of hot Swiss girls who said they’d been studying English there, and met a hot insta model in my hostel there. Did not explore it at length and also got the vibe there weren’t many nightlife establishments making it harder to run game there (assuming day game on the beach is probably your best bet).
