How to Teach English Abroad?

I'm thinking that this sounds like an interesting thing to do, but I don't know a thing about it or if it's worth it. Some of the other more-traveled forum members may have more experience.

Yes, you can go and teach English abroad.
One very important piece of advice I will give you before you do this, is to work in the USA and save up a nice nest egg (at least 5,000 beyond the cost of your plane ticket) before you go.
Unless you are teaching in a shitty environment like South Korea or Saudi Arabia, you don't make that much as an English teacher.
Also, teaching in academies can suck. It is much more pleasant to get private students, and do one on one sessions.
I did well doing this in Spain for a bit, and most of my clients were doctors, medical students, and government workers.
The only thing is, it takes time and effort to get private clients, hence the need for a nest egg to avoid being forced into academy drudgery.

I'm thinking somewhere in Eastern Europe since I already speak a Slavic language and am confident that I can pick up on another Slavic tongue. That or either Latin America or Western Europe.

It's just a temporary thing...maybe a few months in the summer where I have time to explore and meet people. I'm not in it for the money, just the experience (although a little cash doesn't hurt).

It's a great way to meet women while earning something on the side. I've been teaching since 2003(on and off) and it's helped transform my personality to the better.

How to Teach English Abroad?

I'm considering heading over to somewhere in Asia at the start of next year to do a bit of teaching just to see what it's like but I'm not 100% convinced I'll actually enjoy / be any good at the job which puts me off going over there and having to sort out apartments, jobs, commit to contracts etc when I don't even know whether I like it or not. Decisions decisions.

What made you take up teaching abroad, genuine interest in teaching English or just fancied being able to work abroad and it seemed like the easiest option?

I love the idea of living abroad, i'm bored of my home country, it's just the teaching English part I'm not all that enamoured with.

Well I'm from Malta so it's not abroad for me in this case. Tried to teach in Barcelona too but the market was dead. I believe in general teaching is a great way to improve yourself, whether in your home country or abroad. I'm gonna try Russia just because this would be a tough place, great for imrpoving at life overall!

The only issue I have with it is, you need to move to a country, set yourself up with an apartment, find a job, tide yourself over until pay day once you've found the job and that all costs money. All to find out whether you like teaching english abroad or not. I'm not sure teaching english is for me, spending thousands of pounds to find out isn't that appealing and can be better spent.

Yeah, watch out - there are a lot of horror stories about people going abroad and teaching English, getting scammed and whatnot.

Has anybody here ever taught in Bangkok, and do you have any good info to share? I'm highly considering Bangkok, despite the low pay. Korea is also an option, but I'd rather make less money and live somewhere awesome than spend a full year in Seoul.

It's not great but it's not the worst either considering the cost of living. You wouldn't be out every night partying if you had work monday to friday so I reckon the wage is enough to live on.

I have an interview next week here in Bangkok. It seems to be an academy and not a school. They want a demo lesson. I dont know if I should fake the funk or tell them I am planning on getting a cert before the school year starts in May. Any advice?

Won't they ask for a copy of your certification? Do you plan on faking that?

Did you apply in the city or online? You should post everything in that huge teaching thread in the Travel section so more people will see.

True. I knew we had a thread that I posted on earlier this week but I forgot where it was. I dont know what site hit. I tried a few craigslist and also a few websites. I will post the website that hit when I find out.

I replied to a craigslist post about 5 Westerners need for a commercial. I figured why not. Its three hours of my time. I think it pays 30 USD. I just got a hit back saying Im on the shortlist. You know I am black so whenever they say Westerner I figured they wanted some white Europeans. I sent a pic with me in a shirt and tie and they will hit me up. Crazy.
