"anxiety or depression" is a new phenomenon in human history. It comes primarily from a deeply anti-social US culture with people driving around in their own reality bubbles (cars, smartphones, etc). Internal Whining can be fixed by unplugging and getting involved in social groups. I had a chiropractor years ago that killed himself after going cold turkey and quitting Lexpro. In other words, never take a pill other than aspirin.

There was a book I read many years ago, "The Moral Animal", which proposed basically what you just said: Humans emerged 100,000 years ago with bodies and brains and physiologies adapted to a particular lifestyle, that of the hunter gatherer, and we haven't changed much since (100,000 years is a blink of an eye in evolution and natural selection). What HAS changed is our environment- hours in the office, hours alone in the car, the living room sofa and cable tv, the smartphone, which only came along very recently and for which we are not properly adapted (this isn't an anti-technology rant but more a statement of fact). The reason sitting 8 hours in the office in front of a computer or lying on the sofa watching tv fucks up your eyes and puts you at a greater risk of heart attack is because we weren't designed to sit still and stare at a light for hours at a time. Combine that with a modern, sugar-filled, starchy modern diet, and we can add obesity and diabetes to that mix as well. Do you think a hunter gatherer ever got cavities or type II diabetes? What about carpal tunnel or eye strain? Modern ailments, one and all.

However, the author took this further and claimed that anxiety, depression, etc. also come about when our environment and daily activities begin to clash with our 'evolved' purpose. He essentially states that we are poorly designed to handle many aspects of this new modern world, and it leads to mental illness as well as physical.

In addition to extra Vitamin D, exercise, getting your T-levels checked, etc. I strongly recommend that anyone who is suffering from depression make a point of volunteering their time at a good non-profit. When you see how many people often have it so much worse than you do, it helps refocus the mind on helping others. I've never had severe depression, but have helped some friends who do. The problem with depression is that it can be a deep pit unless proactively tackled. One of the ways of taking it head on is to not dwell on your misery too much. Getting out of the house (even when you feel like staying home, playing video games, porn, etc.) and finding the good in this world can do wonders for a depressive person. Depression can make it seem like the only problems we have in this world are our problems, but when we refocus some mental energy to those in even more need than ourselves, it makes us feel so much happier and fulfilled. If you know of someone that needs help, reach out to them. Also, check out http://www.volunteermatch.org for volunteer opportunities. Giving to others makes it much harder to feel super depressed because generosity gives you a natural high. Try it!

I always wondered if low levels of it (demotivation not outright depression) cycle in people, especially due to the odd living of computers, screens, cubicles, being alone a lot etc. I think it's all dopamine, serotonin and SSRI theory is (generally) garbage. Any "down" or demotivation I felt is perfectly described by dopamine --- all the way from being awake earlier in the day when getting out of bed or your body saying wake up (when in poorer cycles you sleep in etc) --- to thinking clearly, wanting to do stuff, wanting to talk a lot, getting boners more and fiercely, etc.

This shit is all dopamine.
