Rap/Hip-Hop Thread

I'll respect that for the most part.

I just get tired of seeing negative views on pages directly focused on one thing. This goes beyond RVF. For example, listening to a Migos track on YouTube and seeing a comment that says "Fuck Migos." If you don't like the group, why did you go out of your way to click on something focused on them? Same with this thread. A thread focused on a specific genre of music or any form of entertainment, let's say a show, like Breaking Bad; if somebody came into that thread just to say "Fuck Breaking Bad, I think it's stupid and not good so I don't watch it," that triggers me.

Fuck rap and hip hop.

A people cannot be separated from their culture.

And the values that popular forms of rap and hip hop encourage and espouse have only done damage to the black, minority, and inner city communities. Kids grow up listening to this shit. I was one of those kids.

Yes I know. But what about Tribe Called Quest. De La Soul. Mos Def. Talib Kweli. The Roots. DOOM.

A handful of real artists with real talent. And I can't say fuck rap without lumping these artists in. But it is what it is. These guys are entertaining, but that entertainment value is trumped by the damage this genre has done to our communities.

This isn't to say that rap is the root of all evil. Of course it's not. There is never one cause, but it's a strong contribution to the cultural decay of the ghettos and trailer parks of America, which has progressed to the burbs and even abroad now. I can't help but wonder how things would be different if the popular topic of debate in these communities wasn't Tupac vs Biggy but was rather Davis vs Coltrane.

^^Agree with your list except for the last two. Lupe definitely did his thing with his latest album. Production was off the hook.

How do you guys listen to music? I binge the hell out of an album for about a week nonstop on repeat. I listen to music about 3-4 hours a day. Then I grow tired of the album and search for something new. Great albums I'll binge on for 10-12 days.

The last 2 werent my absolute favorites that's why I had them at the end.

I know this isnt a popular opinion but Sremmlife was a fun, braggadocious party album. These dudes don't rap about being cocaine kingpins or the hardest in the game. Simple party lyrics over effective beats no more no less. Lupe is dope, one of the best, but I don't want to hear him before I roll out to a club.

Wayne is a polarizing figure most dudes act like he puts out either straight trash or classics. I think most of his work is somewhere in the middle. Of the work he has put out this year Free Weezy Album was the best. No ceilings 2 was very weak, too many tracks and too many bad tracks. Sorry for the wait 2 was a little bit better but not much.

Most disappointing albums of the last year:

Top 5 Dead or Alive-Jadakiss (Hell naw. Never changes his flow or subject matter, almost the exact same features as last album. Still trapped in the 90s, im the hardest in New York era, he sounds bored throughout beats are trash. )

COMPTON- Dr. DRE +friends ( we wait xx years for this?? Should have just been a mixtape. People forgot this even came out after a week. Did he even release any visuals for it? This was sloppy work with no focus)

All Love Lost- Joe Buddens (I thought dude was gonna come with fire. Fire this ain't. Dude whines like an r&b singer for 90% of the album. I fell asleep listening to this in the middle of the afternoon)

If Your Reading This You're to Late- Drake (This album is not horrible but its his weakest work. Lots of filler tracks here. Not feeling most of the beat selection. He also loses points because the best songs were written by someone else. I expect his next album to be better)

"I'm not afraid of dying, I'm afraid of not trying. Everyday hit every wave, like I'm Hawaiian"

...

Yeah, buuuuut.....

Okay let me make a couple points before I tear Khaled a new one.
  • Chris Brown got rid of the blonde hair, or at least judging by that video. About time.
  • This track had the most solid production on Khaled's new album:

Tight as hell.

Anyway, remember when I gave Rick Ross shit for being a goofy wannabe who makes it too easy for himself to be made fun of? I think Ross is #2 in that category out of all the rappers/producers in the game right now, and Khaled is by far #1.

First off, he's Palestinian yet he tries so hard to talk like he's an esé. It's so obvious that's not his normal way of talking. Maybe I don't know what I'm saying here, but that's the impression I've always gotten from him.

Also, he's such a beta and a cuck. I want to do a write-up sometime that basically makes the point that most rappers and producers live very red pill lifestyles. But Khaled goes against this stereotype, or at least in terms of his game and smoothness. He's a fatty who gets oneitis when a girl shows a little interest in him.

Case and point...

They weren't even dating. She didn't say yes.

And this. I can't watch this without laughing. He takes himself so seriously.

I don't hate the dude. I honestly hope he lives a good life. I just think he's a goofy wannabe whom every guy can learn from. If you have the fame or the success but you're still a beta and an obvious poser, that can make all the difference.

"Tribe Called Quest. De La Soul. Mos Def. Talib Kweli. The Roots. DOOM."

Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, two of the best hip hop groups of all time. Everyone here has probably heard "Me, Myself and I" by De La at some point, with ATCQ's "Electric Relaxation" and "Scenario" two must-hear songs from them. Of course, listen to the rest of their albums, especially each group's first two albums. Hidden gem on first De La album: "Eye Know" by De La Soul. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1CaN4thI5w

MF Doom and Mos Def are both lyrical composition geniuses. MF Doom does the unexpected when rapping and keeps a listener interested.

MF Doom on "Accordion" from Madvilliany, one of the best albums of the 2000s, regardless of genre.

I think you're off-base and I'll rebut each point below:

You're talking these videos way too literally. This was a promo for a song called "I wanna be with You" off his "Suffering From Success" feat Nicki Minaj.

Here's a link.

Quote:Quote:

“I was just having fun with it and just show love,” he says. “Bring some excitement for my fans and connect with the record. I just wanted to tap into the emotion of the record and really spread a message. I was joking with it and having fun. We be so busy making these big hits and I wanted to come with a dope plan to present the next smash single besides just giving it out.”

As we all now know, DJ Khaled and Nicki collaborated on a new single called “I Wanna Be With You” which is on his upcoming album Suffering From Success. He used lyrics from the song in his proposal and it ended up being the perfect publicity stunt. But there are some fans who felt totally duped!

Quote:Quote:

And this. I can't watch this without laughing. He takes himself so seriously.

Again this video is just promo fodder. "never surrender" "win, win, win" "we the best", "I changed a lot" etc. Almost everything he says is a line from a song or the title of one of his 8 albums(You a Genius is a documentary video he did). That's why he overemphasizing the words that way.

I guess his social media game is so good that people can't tell his ads from reality.

I disagree with the bolded: Most rapper aren't really living that redpill life they rap about. They're average men with no game who got handed money, fame and women, don't always know what to do with it. Examples:

Eminem oneitis was so bad he wrote tons of songs about how much he hated his ex-wife. If he had game he'd would've found a new LTR.

Joe budden has oneitis hard for some urban model named Tahiry(btw Joe's old label-mate Fabolous banged her out in the early 2000's Watch the first 4 minutes).

Diddy put out songs like "I Need a Girl" and the "Trade it all" (I'm not linking to these beta-ass songs) after J. Lo broke up with him.

And there's the huge thread about Chris Brown's oneitis for Karruche

As far as the DJ Khaled "talking like an ese", I don't want to turn to a race thread but: If you grow up in the hood you're more likely to talk like O-Dawg. If you grow up in the suburbs you're more likely to act like Carlton Banks. Khaled's just being himself.

JUICY J FANS!

Two awesome things happened today.

1.) New mixtape released - O's To Oscars. I've been a little disappointed because he keeps pushing off his new album, but we've had three goddamn mixtapes by him this year.

http://www.hotnewhiphop.com/juicy-j-os-t...song-90174

2.) Rubba Band Business 3 confirmed to be in the works. Holy shit. One and Two were the first mixtapes I ever downloaded. Gonna be playing this over and over and over. Hoping it's released late-March/early-April when the weather gets warmer and goin'-out season starts back up in the Midwest.

"Black Star" is one of my favorite albums of all time, with 'definition' being one of my favorite tracks. I just recently went to a Talib Kweli concert a month ago and I was praying to the hip hop gods he would bring out Mos as a surprise guest. No such luck.

I'm not sure about you guys but I have always gone through phases in hip hop. Growing up in Florida (and some time in Georgia), I was always a fan of dirty south rap styles. It took me a long time to discover some of the great hip hop artists like ATCQ, De la, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Rakim, etc... but I have never looked back. It's actually really hard for me to go back and listen to the Juicy J's and lil Wayne's of the world.

Something else I notice is that these greats are less and less popular nowadays. Especially here in Europe. I recently met this fine ass Dutch girl that was a self proclaimed hip hop head. When I asked her favorite artists, she replied, "fetty wap". I try not to judge but shit like that still makes me cringe.

Coming in here and shitting it up with your condescending bullshit is more than annoying. Nobody is going to come into the Jazz thread and rip into the genre you like, so why are you being a douche to a bunch of members in this thread?

Anyway, I'm a pretty uninformed consumer of hip hop and I'd like to add some stuff to my repertoire. I really only listen to popular radio mainstream stuff-- Eminem, Immortal Technique, Outkast, Jay Z, UGK, Dom Kennedy, TI etc. What are some artists/songs that you guys would recommend to me?

You have no idea how much I was obsessed with this track freshman year.

I even made my own mix that connected Juicy's second verse on Rubba Band Business 2 with 2 Chainz and Tha Joker's verses in the remix on Blue Dream & Lean.

Because I think 2 Chainz & Juicy make a killer collab but I also appreciated Juicy's second verse that he left out in the remix too much, mainly for these lyrics:

Quote:Quote:

I don't go to college but the dorm room is my domain.
Full of pretty bitches showin how they use they brains.
They suck a dick for homework, givin that domework.
Just to say they got with Juicy J and they did it first.
