Do you Vote?

Gonna try one more thread - seems like Politics isn't an obsession in this forum, and rightfully so. There are plenty of other places on the Interwebs to spit shit at those who disagree with however you lean.

It's election time here in Canada, as many of you might know.
And I don't fucking vote.
Holeeeee FAK - the shit people will throw at you when you tell them you don't vote.

I had some dinner guests the other night.

"How are you voting?" she asked me.

"I don't vote." I replied.

(totally aghast) "You Don't Vote??" She asked again.

"No. Waste of my time. No interest. Everyone is lying and no one is telling me anything that will actually serve my needs. Even if they did, I probably wouldn't believe them. But you go ahead and vote. Enjoy your participation."

"So you prefer to have other people make up your mind for you?" She asked.

"That's exactly why I don't vote. If I live in a neighbourhood of 10 people and 6 of them vote to put a cesspool in front of the cul de sac where 4 of us live, is that a system I want to validate and participate in?" I ask.

"People died for your right to vote" she says.

"No they didn't. My forefathers died for their right to live, not for their right to vote." I reply.

"You have to vote - It's your Civic Duty!" She says.

"There is a difference between a RIGHT and an OBLIGATION. Voting is not an obligation. It's my right to NOT vote, just like it's your RIGHT TO vote!"

and on, and on, and on it went...

Been NOT voting for almost 25 years now.
I never push anyone to NOT vote - why do people feel this need to tell me that I must?
I wonder what exactly I am missing?

The one time I got interested was when I was living in the States and Ron Paul got me really fascinated with his view points, his honesty, his thought process, and the change that I really felt he could deliver.

You wanna vote? Go ahead.

Me? I think it's a giant waste of time.

What's your position?

Definitely makes it more fun when walking through a college campus with those petition people:

Stupid college girl activist: "Hi, are you registered to vote in ___?"
Me: "Voting is futile exercise that only exists to create a perception of legitimacy for the state."
Stupid college girl activist: (with confused expression that girls get when they're trying to be fake chipper despite you just having said something that set off their creep alarm) "Well ok then!"

I vote in important national elections because I was a soldier and it matters to me how the Commander in Chief throws our young people into wars, flaps their jaw at news stories, strong-arms Congress to pass legislation, and fucks with the high court. That said, I sat out of the 2012 national election in USA because no one was worth voting for. "EVIL, Evil, or evil?" "Nah, I'm gonna have a beer and think up better avenues for the nation. Have fun out there, assholes, while you still can."

I am looking forward to November 2016.

I will just leave this here:

I don't vote because I don't have much respect for democracy. I think it's an inherently flawed system that keeps swinging to the left, serving only the elites. You simply can't fix things by voting - strong and capable leaders are born in life struggles, not in cozy government offices.

I'd make an exception if I had the possibility to vote for someone like Trump or Putin. Very slim chance of that happening in my country again.

Haven't we already had this thread?

No, I never vote on moral principle, I just write offensive material on the ballot paper (compulsory voting in Australia).

Voting is a delusional action because it's not binding. Once in power the politicians can and do anything they want, regardless of what they promised.

It's also immoral, in that you implicitly accept the violence perpetrated upon you by the state and the democratic majority.

It's like two thugs offering you the option of who will break your legs. You don't say "hmm, I choose you with the smaller arms". That's sick, immoral, cuck behavior. You say "fuck off cunts".

This is where they get the legitimacy they crave. If only 5% of the population votes, that's 95% of the population rejecting their authority, and they'd no longer be able to claim they have an 'electoral mandate'.

I do vote on constitutional ballots though.

It's ironic that my vote in Canadian politics was moving to China.

I've never voted and have been called un-American and told to go back to where I came from when I let loose that I don't vote.

However, I will vote for Trump.

Anytime TADA (Typical American Dumb Ass) says to me that people who don't vote can't complain, I just tell them that I do vote. Voting for people almost always is a waste of time. Voting for initiatives and amendments isn't though. And you should certainly be willing to serve on a jury when called.

I vote but I choose wisely unlike during my college days where I blindly voted Democrat no matter what. I am a registered Independent so I have no party affiliation but have voted for more Republicans as of late due to my more Conservative leanings. I voted GOP in the Maryland Gubenatorial election due to the previous governor's raising taxes (has anybody here heard of Maryland's Rain Tax?), the loss of businesses in the state, and giving illegal immigrants access to state tuition. And in 2016 unless Trump or Carson takes the nomination I will be staying home. I do not discuss my political beliefs on Facebook due to my government position and do not discuss them with family (I have been called an Uncle Tom more times than I can count).

I think voting is important, but agree completely that the push to get people to vote - especially youth - is one that seems to skip the 'informing yourself' part.

I have never voted in any US elections and don't have any specific plans to. I was interested when Ron Paul was running for office, but as a realist I know the voting process in the US is bullshit. The electoral college makes your individual vote seem almost like it's "just for fun" and in the end the candidates are all full of shit and they are not held accountable for their claims they make when campaigning anyway.

I just let this ship sink itself.
