Wildebeests in the pool

Don't normally need to vent like this, however

Went swimming after work. I work hard with my brain, but my body is kind of still so at the end of the day I have a lot of excess physical energy to burn. It means I can focus.

The pool normally has lanes but due to a training session for a club it only had open water (except where the club was swimming)

Fine. But, there were two woman - huge women - swimming to and from very slowly alongside one another with just enough between them to get in the way of everyone. At one point I swam between them - no other way to do lengths and they sort of 'tchhed.'

At another point they decided it was best to swim diagonally (I kid you not.) I and I am sure many others did not get a decent work out, but because it was open water and not lanes the pool guards refused to have a word.

At several points they stopped at the side for five minute intervals. They took up almost all the space and stopped anyone touching in.

After I was in the shower, and I overheard two girls talking about 'how amazing' they had been and 'how many calories they must have burnt.' They decided to go for a burger because 'we really earned it tonight.'

I should have said something but was too filled with revulsion and wanted to get out of there quick.

Disclaimer: I don't mind fat girls exercising, in fact I applaud it and there are several regulars at the pool who I have seen getting faster and thinner since I have been there. I do mind idiots who get in the way of real swimmers and act like they've earned a burger when really they are lucky to have burned a carrot.

They sound more like puffer fish than wildebeests.

You got offended by two women using the pool and not leaving you room to swim laps when there's no lanes?

Sure, these women are deluding themselves as to their calorie burn, but you're deluding yourself too.

If there's no rule about lap swimming at the time this could easily be kids swimming around playing and being in your way and they'd be doing nothing wrong.

Just like you said, you should've said something. It's not like these women were in a designated lane and were breaking rules. If you'd approached them with solid frame and told them you see it's open pool but you'd really appreciate it if they would stay to one side so you can get some laps in they might've had no problem. You could've practiced some game and charmed them to do what you wanted instead of getting yourself worked up over something that might've been no big deal if you'd put any effort into interacting with them.

When I'm in an open pool and I want to swim laps I just tell people and ask them nicely. Most people have no problem. If people are still in my way I have goggles on, so I just maneuver around them or under them if possible.

Same thing when I play beach volleyball. If people that suck and have no idea what they're doing (sometimes they're fat) keep losing their ball onto my court interrupting my game, I don't go getting pissed off, I just go talk to them politely but firmly and see if they can move a little further away from my court. 90% of the time this solves the problem for me and they can continue in their own little oblivious world without affecting mine.

If you let yourself get annoyed easily, you'll be annoyed a lot of your life, and who really wants that?

Look at the bright side. At least they're up and out and trying.

That's as opposed to my condo neighbor, who is so obese she needs a walker to get around. And yet each night as I'm eating my salad or broccoli, I hear knocks on her door from the pizza delivery places. Gee, could diet possibly be a problem here?

True story: About a year ago I heard her screaming "Help!" through the wall. I called the fire department and they busted into her place. She'd fallen in the tub and couldn't get up. I assumed after all this she was elderly. Turns out she's not even 40.

This is in the nice part of town too. I shudder to think what I'd be witnessing in the bad parts.

Aneroid, you have a point. I was angry but possibly my leftover anger is at myself for not having said anything to them.

I'm more interested in how you heard them talking whilst you were in the shower?

Have unisex changing rooms spread to swimming pools now?

These ladies need to learn proper pool etiquette.

Equally annoying is when idiots stand idle on an escalator on the side where people are obviously walking up/down.

Tends to be fat fucks with blown out knees (most likely) who seem to do it either out of spite or total ignorance.

Yes. All the changing rooms are multisex in my city.

Honestly, more power to the fatties if they're at least trying to lose weight.

At least its not pizza night at Planet Fitness.

I did consider this. I admire girls who try to lose weight and know it is to be applauded. I was angry that they swam diagonally as it seemed very inconsiderate when I (and others) were attempting to do lengths. The two abreast thing also got me. If one was capable of swimming faster she would be held back by her friend. Therefore she wouldn't get a full workout.

They're probably so unused to any sort of shared exercise environment that they don't understand the etiquette in those places.

I'm being very generous here of course, but its something to consider.

Comments like "at least they're doing something " annoy the shit out of me.

All they are doing, and people like them, is getting in the way of people who REALLY want to be fit and take care of themselves. They are obstacles to people more than they are benefiting themselves.

These types can be found in any exercise area. Fucking around not knowing what they are doing because they are not committed enough to make the effort to learn something.
Functioning as a goddamn impediment when they could dilly dally just as easily out of the goddamn way.
