Mindset Tool - "Relax" with Andrew Johnson

Like many RVF staples, this might seem off the wall but has given me outstanding results.

For less than the price of a bottle of ACV - you can restart your brain and feel refreshed drug-free.

Most of my life, I was not been able to take naps. When I was a kid I would try to take a nap and would instead lay in bed thinking about legos and shit. Now in my mid-twenties I still do the same thing. I am an engineer by trade, and a chronic over thinker by nature, so going nap-less made sense.

Once I got into college, my sleep quality took a dive. If I wasn't out partying, I was either working or at socializing.

This led to stress related issues, and I had to change something. Meditation helped me relax, but did not help sleep, especially if I tried napping. Sometimes I was tired and wanted to nap but couldn't, or I was stressed and couldn't sleep. I would lie in bed thinking "what the fuck dude, we have so much to do tomorrow! Go to sleep!" The vicious cycle between stress and sleeplessness continued to ravish my happiness and energy.

This is when I stumbled upon "Relax" by Andrew Johnson. I have no idea how I found it, but I am glad I did.

Okay, what the fuck is "Relax?"

"Relax" is an app by hypnotherapist Andrew Johnson. There are many other apps offered by Andrew Johnson, but Relax is the first I found and the one I most frequently use. Andrew Johnson is from the UK and the bloke has a low, soothing voice with a slight accent.

All therapies follow the same progression: Instructions, Induction, Therapy, Ending.

Instructions = short introduction to the therapy, how-to. This is what you first hear. I use this time to shut my phone on airplane mode and do some light stretching. You will be awake for this.

Induction = the actual hypnosis, this is what "puts you under." You will hear this most often so choose one you enjoy. "Breathing Induction" is my favorite, your body feels weightless after, an awesome experience.

Therapy = this is the "brainwashing" part of the therapy, where your chosen topic is discussed by Andrew. The ones I use most often are Deep Relax, Deeper Relax, and Stop Overthinking, but there are therapy tracks that cover many RVF-related practices:

-Belive In Yourself
-Confidence
-Quit Drinking
-Get Fit
-Better Golf
-Improve Posture

Ending = Choosing "Sleep" will turn the app off after the therapy is complete. Great for going to bed. "Wake" and "Delayed Wake" perform a five-minute wake-up therapy that ends with Andrew Johnson shouting at you, awesome for power naps. You wake up ready to conquer the world.

The app options are:

Free single practice: one hypnosis topic. These include Relax, Power Nap, Beat Social Phobia, Stop Drinking, etc. You cannot change the therapy topic. Highly recommend to use the free apps until you find a topic that suits you.

Paid single practice: exactly the same as the free apps except they don't have any text ads.

Relax +: this is the customizable app, which allows you to change the music, induction, length, etc. You can do two therapy topics, anything. The only problem is that every add-on is an in-app purchase. This is the one I currently use. Highly customizable, highly recommended.

Infinite Relaxation: For $5 you can only change the length, music track, and conclusion. I don't like this app because the topic is random. I believe guys should choose a topic they want to improve on, and use the same therapy daily for 30 days to really pound the message into the psyche.

How do you use it?

Vampire Naps - If I am behind on sleep and need to build some energy for going out, I will do a quick 25-minute therapy at night, early enough to recharge but not late enough to want to sleep. I leave the lights on and put a sleep mask on, so when I wake up, I am blinded by the light and have to get up. Sometimes I sleep for a few minutes, sometimes I don't. Either way - I wake up relaxed and ready to go.

Power Naps - If I am behind on sleep, I will take a 50 - 150 minute nap. Lights off, delayed wake on, and lights off. Sometimes I sleep, sometimes I don't. If I go through the entire therapy and do not zone out or sleep, I'll wait until the end of the therapy to give up on going to sleep.

Before Bed - I try not to be dependent on the app, so I only use it if I am restless. I use it for sleep less and less thanks to The Lizard of Oz Program for Better Sleep and Better Health, but I still use it if I am having trouble falling asleep.

Is it still effective with long term use?

YES. I have been using these apps for five years now. I worried that much like your favorite song, it would get tiresome after 50 listens or so. Wrong. I have grown accustomed to the audio, but this only helps me zone out even more. My brain has become better programmed to relax at the cue of these recordings.

I cannot recommend these apps enough. They have been pivotal in my success.

Hmmm what if you can't take naps during the day? I'm not sure most people who work regular jobs can get away with napping.

The recordings can be used right before bed for the same effect.
