Los Angeles City Council: Committee Declares a 'State of Emergency' on Homelessness

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A Los Angeles City Council committee declared a "state of emergency" on homelessness in the city and said they're ready to commit $100 million to combat the problem.

The plan, which was announced on Tuesday, is expected to complement Mayor Eric Garcetti's plan to combat homelessness.

Garcetti recently issued a proposal to devote nearly $13 million toward short-term housing initiatives paid for with projected excess funds.

If approved, the new $100 million initiative will be directed to the L.A. City Council's Housing Committee, which would decide how to spend it on projects, including long-term housing and expansion of shelter capacity.

There was no word on where the $100 million would come from.

I'm wondering where the $100 million budget will come from? Los Angeles is practically broke, and the middle class who would provide most of the tax money has already left for greener pastures.

I know a homeless man who was making $100 a day just from panhandling tourists in Hollywood. He ain't gonna give that up for some minimum wage job being paid chump change.

In my view. This initiative is going to make things worse. Considering that most homeless in Los Angeles are homeless by choice and have mental and drug issues. This would encourage even more homeless people to come to this city.

Its getting terrible, the homeless are invading the Westside now too. They are just setting up tent cities on sidewalks that aren't in skid row. There are basically mini-skid Rows popping up in Venice (near Rose Ave which is pretty hipster/expensive), West LA (around Cotner which runs right under the 405 freeway) and downtown in nicer areas (near city hall and near the cathedral).

Solution would be just to pick them up in a bus and dump them off on the Santa Monica beach.

The homeless situation in LA is going to get worse since the price of housing in going up and up in LA...with no end in sight.

It seems like everywhere there are tents and/or mobile "dog houses" (google it) with homeless people.

I blame the mild weather (which allows you to sleep outside) and the unaffordable housing.

Judging by what i see in Santa Monica, I assume the city has been doing that already.

The Homeless factor has really gotten noticeable in that area. It's even visible on Google Maps. Many of those are veterans who don't want to stay in VA housing.

But the biggest homeless emcampment I've seen so far is under the 101 and Alvarado in echo park.

And it's starting to spread all over LA. I'm seeing that the LA City Council is combating the homeless problem for the Olympic Bid. It wouldn't look good to have homeless encampments all over LA

They should dump all the homeless into Malibu, Beverly Hills, Calabasas etc.

Give those rich white liberals a taste of their own diversity medicine.

LA should just create a "favela" part of LA and let the homeless live there illegally.

After all, LA is pretty much a Latin American city, might as well have Latin American urban solutions.

Rio de Janeiro has tons of favelas and it got the Olympic bid.

Granted, Brazil is now "pacifying" those favelas, but still...there are tons of favelas in Rio.

This is what happens when you have political leaders who don't care about their people.

They don't care about creating or keeping jobs.

They only care about getting reelected, milking the system, kissing Israeli and Chinese ass, spouting feminist and gay talking points, and waging imperialistic wars.

Political leaders are people, so what are we to expect? They are not angels. Claiming you wish to help everyone else has always merely been a device by which people help themselves alone.

That is assuming the homeless are primarily unemployed destitute people and not mentally ill vagrants or panhandlers. Social services are there and anyone with below average intelligence can take advantage of them, but the mentally ill usually don't.

Most of them probably belong in mental hospitals, which "reformers" got completely shut down and which politicians no longer wanted to pay for anyway.

The South Bay is still clear of homeless.... I guess that's what multi-million dollar beach homes will do. There is a bag lady in Redondo Beach though.
