Game on man, VP! So happy for you.

Another question. Up until your latest post, I assumed that you were fairly well past novice speaking levels in Chinese. Now you say you don't know more than 10 words in Chinese. How were you communicating with all these people offering you business opportunities? Do you do wechat translation with your prospective business partners, or do they speak enough English?

Thanks CS!
It's been mainly in English as they do have English speaking staff.
But gotta say that the translation option on wechat has been a lifesaver on many occasions!

VP, have you given Pimsleur Mandarin a try?

I wonder how conversational you could get using a do-it-yourself audio course.

Capitao,
Yes I'm going through the Pimsleur series that one of the China long term expats from here (Global Entry) has graciously and generously sent me. Mega thanks my friend!

However, Chinese requires more than just listening to a software. The hardest part in learning to speak it so far has been to properly pronounce words. Due to the numerous tones (5!), the way you pronounce s word can have drastically different meanings. Not to mention the fact its a major tongue twister like no other language.

Haha, is the WeChat translator more effective than the google translate? That's what another RVFer suspects too.. Google had always been my go-to traditionally.

Truth like no other. I'm of Chinese descent with childhood exposure, and have been taking it for 7 years and I'm STILL not really able to read a newspaper. [Image: dodgy.gif]

Cyclone,
Haven't used google translate yet. However Wechat translate is good as it translates things on the spot so no need to copy paste a word/phrase and go to another site.

It was hilarious man! Even when walking together or sitting at the bar or even in bed, we had to use wechat to communicate the most basic things! We had a few hearty laughs about it but she's been good sports as she's been patient and has been teaching me some words.

Sw, forget about reading or writing it, at this time all focus is on speaking it and understanding it. Slowly, very slowly, even a couple of words here and there. Lol

VP, good shit! I'm decent at the speaking and understanding; blessed with the heritage gift of getting the general gist of some words even if I've never explicitly studied them before because it's in my subconscious. I'm trying to get my writing and reading up to scratch.

Looking forward to more of your reports; slaying back in the ancestral homeland is now a major post-redpill goal for me.

Travesty,
If you ever come to China, one of the first things you'll notice is the super silky smooth legs of Chinese girls. You need to witness it with your very own eyes to really grasp it. Just writing about it makes all warm and fuzzy! Ahahah

Now regarding whether I'd get a sweet girl to shave her pubic hair or not, its a complex issue, not as black and white as it would be with western girls. Asians and Chinese in particular, it's all about face. If you get your girl to shave her pussy, she will do it to please you. However, she will feel deep down insulted and will think that she's not worthy the way she is. Hence she will feel awkward.

So if this is a girl I really like and want her for more than just a bang or two or ten, then Depending on the size of her bush. If it's small I actually like it as its sexy. But if it's a tropical forest, then I would start talking about it with her slowly.

Sw,
Yeah you truly are blessed to have a Chinese heritage. I really feel that Chinese guys have an unfair advantage over anyone else by the simple fact they can speak Chinese. Believe it or not, I sometimes wish I was Chinese. Not an FOB one mind you but one educated in NA. best of both worlds. [Image: smile.gif]

It's been a month that I've been in China.

Things have been very hectic to say the least!

In that one month I've been here, I've met more interesting guys than in 20 years in Canada! Literally, no joking!

In the process I've done things that never even crossed my mind as possible for me as has been the case over the past few days! Many things among which being short listed to potentially appear on a film, yes you read that right, on a MOTHA FUCKING FILM!!! not to mention, after going a few nights in a row to my local KTV with a couple of buddies and becoming like the mascot of the place, being treated like total royalty by the local patrons to the point that almost that it's a concrete possibility that they may hire me and my buddy as entertainers there! [Image: banana.gif]

Only in China! China has been blowing my mind and so will yours!

However, THE one major cockblock bas been Chinese. Mind you I'm making progress, I can now speak a grand total of 10 or so words! [Image: banana.gif] On a serious note, I really need to get serious about the lingo! This is THE one thing holding me down big time currently, specially girl wise! Sooo many hot girls everywhere, but not being able to say much has been a MAJOR bitch so far! However, I'm starting a course this weekend! [Image: smile.gif]

Will write a more comprehensive post as soon as time permits.

God Bless China! [Image: heart.gif]

VP, consider paying a private teacher for 2 hours per day, five days a week, for a whole month.

I've done language classes in both Spain and Thailand, and I think they are a waste of time. Too many people in the classroom, and you don't really get much speaking time or time with the teacher.

If I ever decide to learn a new language I'll skip group classes all together and commit to one month of 2 hours per day with a private tutor. Chinese may take longer, but I think 40 hours of private 1 on 1 lessons in a month would be a a huge kick start with most languages.

VP, your enthousiasm is contagious haha. I've been to China a few times, but you make me want to pack my shit and go back again. Seems like you are doing really great. And yeah, some of these Chinese women.. You certainly are in an area with some fine examples. Shanghai, Hangzhou, great fun to be had. Enjoy it and keep posting.

Great thread.

As far as learning Chinese goes, I would personally go about hiring a private Chinese tutor for cheap. I think you can get them for around 100-150 RMB per hour in your city. Bonus if she is a cute Chinese girl, you could end up banging her and then get free lessons. [Image: banana.gif]

I'd like to know more about how you negotiate with Chinese for a higher salary or better business deals. What would be the best way to approach this?

VP,

Download the PLECO app and make a list of commonly used words. Keep going through the words whenever you have free time. PLECO has been my savior studying Chinese.

Arado's advice on this topic is worth paying attention to. His Chinese is tight.

Thanks Arado for the advice. I'm going to download it right now.

The Chinese course that was supposed to start this afternoon was postponed till next Sunday. At this time, strongly thinking of getting private classes as that would be a much better and more efficient way to learn. Preferably if it's with a sweet and sexy teacher! [Image: smile.gif]

That depends on your personality and learning style. If you are very good at self-motivation, a private tutor may be ideal.

If you'll gain something from the social pressure to compete, a class may be the better option.

Of course, if you're really serious, there's no reason why you can't do both.

Even a decent Chinese teacher doesn't cost that much. There's a lot of them here in China and they have a lot of competition.

I disagree with Suits. Private tutors are perfect for people who are not self motivated because you have an appointment with someone at a set time each day, so you have pressure to show up and learn. If you don't show you are still paying for the time.

I found classes horrible for this because they move slow as dogshit and it's a very inefficient use of time. 4 hours in a classroom per day and if there is 4-8 people then you get very little actual speaking time or having your tone corrected. The teacher simply can't correct half a dozen peoples tones without slowing the class to a snail's pace, and group classes are already at the pace of a tortoise. So after 4 hours of inefficient classroom time you have to go home and study an additional 1-2 hours to actually drill the stuff into memory.

In a one on one setting you will get the repetition that you need to drill a new language into your head, and have a teacher there to make sure your tone is correct. I'd use the last 20-30 minutes of each 2 hour block for just repetition of what you learned that day. Really drill it into your memory.

I'd actually get a non sexy tutor because if she's cute I'd waste half of each session bullshiting and flirting with her instead of actually learning. Then I'd fuck her and she'd essentially be my hooker since I'm paying her.

Wise words Rio! Totally agree with you man on the advantages of the private non hot tutor!
The group deal is one that doesn't appeal to me much specially considering it's only 1, 2 hours max per week on sunday afternoons in a class comprised of 8-10 people. So not much time to get personalized attention. Will be actively looking for a good private tutor this week in order to get started for good with Chinese.

In other news, I was approached last night by someone to do private football coaching for a small group of kids on the weekends, which could come to about 100$/hr! I'd have to go through the details of it and carefully think it through. While it's quite a juicy offer, I also want to have time for myself to work on my own biz. Plus looks like a couple of other guys I had in the pipelines are resurfacing after going AWOL for a couple of weeks.

Decision time ahead!

Some years ago I bought an Ipad2 just for getting Pleco. It really helps, especially if you ever want to learn how to read. It can separate characters and show you how they are composed, plus they have so many example sentences.

Also they have a really good Chinese-Chinese dictionary once you make the jump to full on Chinese.

If you have an Iphone getting Pleco is the one number thing you need to do. Also Pleco on iphone has a camera lookup for characters, just point your iphone camera at text and it will translate for you. I never used it but Ive seen people use it with good results.

I just returned to China after getting shoulder surgery and I'm planning my schedule for tutoring on the weekends. Its a tough balancing act when people are throwing 300 yuan an hour/ 50 dollars an hour cash to sit with a teenager and shoot the shit. I almost always take on more than I should because greed wins.

One thing to remember: parents talk to each other constantly, especially women who want the status of their children being with a foreign teacher. I would take that job teaching football, just because you never know the opportunities that will come from all those parents talking about you to other parents.
