‘Dangerous racist’ inspired by Jihadi John who tried to behead a Sikh dentist in Tesco in revenge for Lee Rigby’s murder is jailed for life

A white supremacist inspired by ISIS executioner Jihadi John was jailed for life today after trying to kill an Asian dentist with a hammer and machete in a supermarket.

Zack Davies, 26, of Mold, North Wales, shouted 'White Power' and 'I did it for Lee Rigby' as he attacked Dr Sarandev Bhambra in the town's Tesco store last January.

He was convicted of Dr Bhambra's attempted murder and jailed for a minimum of 14 years.

Davies, who had posed in Nazi uniform and even dressed as Jihadi John, left home to kill his mother's boyfriend but after failing to find him he tried to murder Dr Bhambra instead.

Sentencing him to a minimum term of 14 years, Judge Rhys Rowlands told Davies: 'This was a dreadful offence in which an innocent young man was set upon with great savagery in broad daylight in front of others. It was a racist attack. You are a very dangerous young man.'

He added: 'One can only imagine the sheer terror you subjected him to.'

Davies was an open racist and owned posters, flags, armbands, and leaflets linked to Nazism, and had bought himself a lock knife with a swastika on the handle.

Police also found copies of Hitler's Mein Kampf and a book called 'White Power' in his home and a leaflet referring to the death of Fusilier Lee Rigby which declared: 'Vengeance will be ours, bring back capital punishment for terrorist scum.'

Davies had also made repeated internet searches for material about ISIS and Taliban atrocities, researching beheading and mutilating victims.

Dr Bhambra, who was in the public gallery to see him jailed, said outside court the attack was 'as an act of terrorism.'

He said: 'Why was he not considered a terrorist, given his political ideals? He had numerous accounts on social media posting racial material that were removed by the service providers.

'Yesterday statistics were published on the record number of terror arrests in the UK - how many of these were neo-Nazi terrorists? Neo-Nazis and racists like Davies propagate extreme violence against non-white UK citizens, the threat this poses to minorities in my opinion is not taken seriously.'

Dr Bhambra said that Davies was a white supremacist who had tried to kill him because of his ethnicity. He added : 'Imagine your own sons, daughters, brothers or sisters facing my reality and you may begin to understand and appreciate what my family and I have been going through in the last nine months.

'While Zack Davies has been convicted and sentenced for attempting to kill me I am convinced that the background behind the incident has not been explored fully.

'Was I targeted? Mold is a small market town, Davies may have been aware of my movements. By his own admission Davies was a man who harboured a real hatred for non-whites. He had a history of violence and always carried a knife. Could this attack have been prevented?'

Dr Bhambra described his attacker as a coward. 'He attacked me from behind and intended to behead me. By the Grace of God I remained conscious and was able to defend myself.

'It is abhorrent that he claimed that he tried to kill me in Lee Rigby's honour. My thoughts and prayers go out to Lee Rigby and his family.'

Judge Rowlands said Davies had a 'worrying interest in far-right and extremist ideologies which are quite abhorrent to all right-thinking people.'

The judge said Davies had admitted intending to behead his mother's partner and he had posted videos of himself dressed as 'Jihadi John.'

Judge Rowlands said: 'Over a period of time before the attack on Dr Bhambra you had developed extreme racist views and were planning on carrying out a murderous attack in order to draw attention to them and yourself.'

Davies told police on January 14 he had left home armed with a hammer, machete and small lock knife to attack his mother's boyfriend, who he blamed for having to leave home.

The court heard he went to attack Sion Williams, who worked at the town’s post office in Earl Road, but he was not there and followed Dr Bhambra into Tesco.

Terrified shoppers told how Davies then pursued the bleeding Dr Bhambra who fell several times as he slashed his skull to the bone and gashed his back with the machete and cut the nerves and tendons to his left hand as he tried to defend himself.

The court heard Dr Bhambra, of Leeds, told police: ‘He would have hacked me to bits. I have no doubt in my mind that he was trying to kill me. I was singled out, I was attacked on the basis of my colour … I thought I was going to die.’

Dr Bhambra was saved by ex-soldier Peter Fuller who showed 'quite remarkable courage' by standing in front of Davies with his arms outstretched, blocking his path and allowing the victim to escape.

Mr Fuller then persuaded Davies to put down his weapons and stayed with the defendant until the police arrived.

But Dr Bhambra's left hand had been almost severed, there were two wounds to the back of his head caused by the hammer and machete, and further injuries to his back, and side of his foot.

Dr Bhambra is still recovering and hopes to return to work soon, the prosecution said.

Defence counsel John Philpotts said Davies was remorseful: 'He's very sorry for what he has done. He's written a letter of apology to Dr Bhambra. It will be given to the Crown Prosecution Service.'

Mr Philpotts said a doctor had spoken of Davies having 'possible mental difficulties.'

Dr Bhambra said today he understood Peter Fuller, to whom he would be 'forever grateful for his timely and possibly lifesaving intervention,' was to receive an award. 'Peter has shown exceptional bravery,' he declared.

He praised his family, medical professionals and police liaison officers. He said: 'Incidents of this nature are avoidable and have no place in our multicultural society. There are no winners here and true justice is never served. I am moving on with my life both emotionally and professionally in an attempt to catch up on time that has been robbed from me.

'I will never understand racial hatred. What possesses a man to have so much disdain for another person? I would not wish this experience on anyone and I will endeavour to gain positively from this totally negative ordeal. I am trying to remain positive, forward thinking'.

Police today welcomed the sentence.

Det Chief Inspector Alun Oldfield said: "This was a horrific attack and we are pleased with the sentence given to Davies.

'Although Davies was known to the police before this incident there was nothing to suggest he posed an immediate risk to the public.

'North Wales Police takes racist and extremist incidents very seriously. Fortunately such incidents remain rare in North Wales.'

Mr Fuller walked forward a few paces further to investigate further.

“He saw an Asian male on his knees with a white male standing over him swinging a machete towards the Asian man’s head. He saw one blow land with full force hitting Dr Bhambra in the back and shoulder area.

“The white male continued to swing the machete with full force towards Dr Bhambra’s head. He cannot say how many blows there were, but he is sure that other blows did connect with Dr Bhambra.

“He describes it as being the most evil thing he had ever seen,” Mr ap Mihangel said.

Mr Fuller could see the machete with blood on it, the court was told.

“He (Mr Fuller) said he will never forget the look of fear in his (Dr Bhambra’s) eyes at the time,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Fuller saw Dr Bhambra get to his feet and run away towards the bakery.

The defendant gave chase and had both weapons raised.

Mr Fuller did not move – he himself was in shock, Mr Mihangel told the court.

“A few seconds later the two men returned – again the defendant still had both weapons in his hands. As Dr Bhambra passed Mr Fuller stepped into the defendant’s path in an attempt to prevent him from passing.

“He told him to calm down, it was madness and that he was an ex-soldier himself. “The defendant lowered his weapons and said “I’ve lost it, we’re under attack mate.’”

“Mercifully, Mr Fuller was able to persuade the defendant to place the weapons on the floor and told him to move away from them.

“He stayed with the defendant for about 10 minutes or so until the police arrived. “During that time he told Mr Fuller that he had intended to attack someone in the Post Office but had seen the Asian male (Dr Bhambra) in Tesco.

“Significantly, he also said that ‘You know that you stopped me’,” Mr Mihangel said.
