The Russian jet being shot down wasn't a hoax after all.

A Russian air force jet has been shot down by Turkish forces after it strayed into the country's airspace, according to unconfirmed reports. Eyewitnesses reported a large explosion in Huraytan, northern Syria, as three fighter jets were sighted flying overhead, the Express said.

A Turkish-based journalist tweeted that three Turkish planes were responding after radar locked on to some "mysterious" MiG-29 jets, which are a similiar model to those used by Russian forces.

The news comes after Turkey scrambled F-16 fighter jets last weekend after a Russian MiG-29 crossed into Turkish territory near the town of Yayladagi, in Hatay province, close to the border with Syria. Turkish jets then escorted the Russian aircraft back into Syrian airspace.

Turkey's prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu has accused Russia of escalating the conflict in Syria, and he claimed that Moscow admitted its warplanes had violated his country's airspace by mistake. Russia's ambassador in Turkey was also summoned in protest at the provocative action.

Russia has been leading a unilateral bombing campaign in Syria after Russian president Vladimir Putin declared war on Islamic State (Isis). Coalition forces led by the US have accused Russia of only entering the conflict to prop up Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad.

Turkish officials have warned Moscow would be held "responsible for any undesired incident" that may occur in the future. Both the Turkish and Russian consulate were unavailable to comment at the time of writing.

Tensions between Russia and the West have been heightened since the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where Moscow is accused of backing the armed rebels in that country. It was thought that relationships had thawed somewhat after Putin met US president Barack Obama this month and said that he planned on taking on IS. However, Russian forces have been targeting US-backed rebel groups, contrary to US goals.

That gives Turkey a great excuse against Russia since they were already upset at the intervention throwing a wrench in their attempts at bombing Kurds into extinction.

The US is may levy this to take pressure off of our Al Qaeda mercenaries brave freedom fighters. That's probably the best situation the corrupt defense committee chairpersons could've hope for. They may get a small window to reorganize of they play it right. Expect more demonizing, outright obfuscation and mention of inane claims like Russia's "human rights conduct" hitting the news cycles.

The big question is: What is Russia going to do about this?

Given how Russian has zero MIG-29s deployed in Syria, I'm very skeptical of this.

They only have Sukhois there.

Maybe ISIS does have an air force!

Has there been anything from the Kremlin to confirm or deny the claim?

If it is a MiG-29 that was shot down, then likely it was a Syrian Air Force jet. One wonders if they still have any operable fighter aircraft at this point in the war, though.

Personally, I believe the covert war is much larger than assumed. It makes more sense that this was a more or less 'pirate' aircraft being flown for reasons other than what was specified.

For now, I can't find anything on Russian officials acknowledging the incident.

These twitter reports are horribly inaccurate, but if it was a MIG-29 than the Turks shot down a Syrian Air force jet since they are the only ones flying that type of jet in the region.

Also, if a jet had been shot down, there would be photos by now of the wreckage. The FSA clowns are always quick to take photographic evidence (just take a look at their tweets). I doubt the truth of this story and think it is just "moderate" rebel BS disinformation.

While it's a great cartoon, is there any way to confirm that Russia is dropping those leaflets?

I would be overjoyed to see Russia blatantly calling out the Zionist plan like that, it just seems unlikely that they would be so obvious about it.

Then again, this is Russia we're talking about...

You know you're set for troubling times when you have to rely on individual commentators and Russia Today to get the truth. I understand the MSM needs its propaganda but aren't they human too? Don't they understand this is bad?

Saying Russia is bombarding civilians when in fact they are retreating terrorists, one of which was portraying its glee in beheading western journalists should flip a lightswitch for them no?

How the hell as a rational human being do you give the likes of ISIS anti-air and anti-tank weapons when not years ago you engaged against this very type of person in two different countries? Did these men and women participating in the arming and training od "rebels" have no personal loss through a dead friend, colleague, lover?

What is a serving soldiers take on this?

^^^Yes, it's quite sad isn't it? But they really are that desperate. The US lost in Syria and is pretty much calling it quits. Journalists who have been beating the war drums, crying foul of "Russian Aggression" still haven't come to terms with it. Their last chance at getting their point across is to try and smear Russia to bring it down as much as possible before the new topic de jour is put on their teleprompter.

ISIL directly benefits from ‘backfiring’ Russia bombing of rival groups and gains territory in Syria

Indeed - because the difference between those various factions is so great. The suckers are trying to grab every last straw of irrational reality out there.

Next headlines:

"Putin causing humanitarian crisis."
"Putin causing housing crisis as returning Syrian refugees find their homes destroyed and are left homeless."
"Yes - "rebels" are dying by the thousands and defecting, but they are making significant land gains in areas where no one is looking. Trust us - we have boots on the ground and we know it. Putin is bombing our moderate beheaders and the more extremist beheaders are winning."
"Putin's bombs are contributing to global warming. UN Climate Change council: ISIS fighters in sneakers and pick-up trucks have a much lower carbon footprint than missiles, helicopters and fighter jets."
"UN Climate Change council: ISIS decreases carbon emissions by decreasing population and ushering new green economy similar to the Middle Ages. Putin is endangering that development."

Putin said the Russian air campaign was already more effective than discontinued U.S. efforts to support some militant groups.

“It would have been better to give us $500 million,” Putin said of the aborted U.S. program to fund the Free Syrian Army. “At least we would have used it more effectively from the point of view of fighting international terrorism.”

I just realised the sudden need to launch air strikes against ISIS by the UK and France is a possible cover to protect the special forces we have over there.

No wonder they want Russia to stop bombing everything that isn't friendly.

Don't know whether this was a Russian precision strike but it doesn't get more precise than that. Couldn't embed the video directly.

Thanks for the video DeeDee, it put a smile on me. Very funny to see the guys repeating "Allahu Akbar" like in the cliche, and then exploding!
