Would you break the arm?

I had something fun happen to me at the last Judo tournament.

After putting the guy in an armbar and as I had his arm fully extended I wanted to go especially slow since I'd rather not break/hyper extend the dudes arm.

So here I am raising the hips and I hear/feel a pop coming from the guys elbow. Assuming I had just fucked up the guys arm I let go and try to check if he's OK despite no tapping from him or anything.

Now I'm wishing I had just snapped that shit in half since time ran out shortly after and the match ended in a draw.

What would you have done in that situation?

The same as you.

Who in their right mind would potentially disable another man just to win, what is ultimately, a meaningless contest. That is supposed to be fun.

I'm sure in reality you would/will do the same thing again; you're just a bit angry at your opponent's recklessness I think.

Unless I was in a UFC match where getting paid depended on the outcome of the fight I wouldn't purposely mangle a fella like that. An even if I was in a UFC fight I would give the guy every chance in the world to tap before I finished cranking on a armbar.

In my BJJ tourneys I rolled harder and meaner then I ever did in my classes. I mean putting all my weight in uncomfortable places or doing little things to annoy my opponent. But never in my years of BJJ did I try to injure someone.

You're asking if we think you should have "just snapped that shit in half"? Is this a real question? Dudes like you give sports like that a bad name. This should have never crossed your mind except in a threatening situation. Maybe hang it up until the anger issues are under control.

What would you have wanted, if you were in his position? You could have given him an injury that would have affected his elbow for the rest of his life.

I tell my students to hold the sub till the ref stops it. This doesn't mean crank it, it just means hold it. Breaking it or letting it go aren't your only options. You can give a little slack while you evaluate the situation, but don't let go or you're opening yourself up to all kinds of fake taps and bullshit like the above situation

Do unto others. If the fight isn't life or death or worth millions of dollars there is no reason to snap another dude's arm. You know you won and he knows you won too. No need to wreck someone's arm over a pointless fight.

Like others have said, unless you're Mayweather permanently ending Roussey's career there's no need to disable the opponent.

You did the right thing.

I would never break the arm unless it was a multi million dollar fight or something bigger riding on the outcome.

Of course not, though I would put everything I have into the choke.

Consequences are less dire.

From the way you talk, I've got to assume you don't actually do any kind of combat sports competitively or actually been in competitions.

But I just want to clarify. Dudes like me, who when they have an arm bar locked in and taking the precaution to carefully apply pressure so damage is next to non existent. Who, even at the sound of a joint popping (the same as cracking your knuckles) instantly release said arm bar due to concern for their opponent. People like me are giving sports like this a bad name.

I understand you completely. [Image: tard.gif]

To everyone else who took the time to reply. I appreciate your thoughts and opinions. Posted this initially just to vent a bit since I was annoyed to miss out on my chance and moving to 2nd dan. I'll just get it in a few weeks in the next competition.

Hmm, that's a tough one.

Maybe you could've switched to a quick armdrag to the back and choked the piss out of him real quick.

My coach is an old school Carlson Gracie black belch from Brazil and he always tells us in tournaments to apply submissions quickly and ruthlessly.

I think it's a sound philosophy that comes from a street fight mindset.

You can't be in a brawl and stop to check if the guy who's trying to kill you is OK after you pop him.

You caught this guy in an armlock fair and square and he's either too proud, too stubborn or too stupid to tap even as his arm is clicking.

That's his problem and I don't see why you need to back off your game because of it.

You both know the rules and the risks going into a fight and this guy is at checkmate but refuses to admit defeat.

I think you did the right thing applying it slow and controlled but I probably would have kept raising my hips.

Someone who is less of a gentleman than you are is going to jack this guy's arm up one day, guaranteed.
