Oddly enough dentists are saying tooth enamel erosion has become a big problem with this generation of people. It came unexpected as previous generations did not have this problem. Somehow the North American diet has introduced various acids -especially in soft drinks, fruit juices and also foods. Swimming in chlorinated water is also a culprit. Once the enamel wears off there is nothing that can bring it back -- and teeth become sensitive and brittle. Especially those taking apple cider vinegar have to be very careful - best to use a straw. A lot of fruits also have a lot of acid.

Also carry chewing gum with xylitol in it and rinsin your mouth with water after eating will prevent enamel erosion.

The plain xylitol sugar seems quite helpful in preserving tooth enamel. It is quite odd bc it looks and taste just like sugar and it protects teeth - whereas real sugar corrodes teeth quite a bit.

Also don't immediately brush your teeth after eating or drinking anything acidic, wait half an hour.

I drink a lot of coffee, beer, and energy drinks. I floss, brush, and mouthwash every night. I also brush in the mornings. The dentist checks my teeth every six months and I never have cavities. The only work I've had in my adult life was a couple chipped teeth and replacement fillings from my childhood days. Any coffee stains go away after visiting the dentist and I have yet to see any adverse effects from losing tooth enamel.

As long as you brush, floss, and mouthwash regularly, the loss of tooth enamel probably won't be an issue.

Most mouth wash with alcohol like the very popular Listerine is acidic and can erode tooth enamel. I have heard ACT mouth wash is a good brand for tooth enamel. Unfortunately not available in Canada.

Look up oil pulling. Basically it is using coconut oil(is there any fucking thing it can't do?) as a mouthwash, but you have to do it for at least five minutes so it can get tedious, and be sure to spit it out afterwards because oil pulling basically pulls a lot of toxins out of your body and into the oil.

Another thing to avoid is brushing your teeth with baking soda more than once a week.

I know Victor Pride has written about brushing his teeth with nothing but baking soda, and while it'll make your teeth white, that kind of thing will destroy your teeth after a few years.

There's a book called "Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye" by dentist Dr Elllie Phillips. Unusually for a dentist she emphasises prevention over cure.

The book advocates a mouth care system which I have adopted. I've had a few cavities in my teeth but I have not had any new ones since using her method.

To protect tooth enamel you should neutralise the acids in the mouth after eating sweet or acidic food. Dr Ellie recommends one of the following:

- Eating an alkaline food such as cheese, milk or yoghurt
- Chewing xylitol gum
- Using an alkaline mouth wash. She recommends CloSYS

Yes, this really needs to be emphasized.

A lot of these 'natural solutions' to whitening teeth, only works by stripping down the surface layer of the teeth, to reveal a new layer underneath. Sure, it works in the short term but is going to be quite detrimental down the road.

An interesting point raised also about alkaline mouth wash. I'll have to look into that, because Listerine and traditional mouthwash, as far as I know, is acidic.
