Sigma Nu At Old Dominion Suspended For "Freshman Daughter Drop-Off" Signs

The Sigma Nu chapter at Old Dominion University has been suspended while the school investigates an incident involving controversial banners hung outside an off-campus house, Brad Beacham, executive director of Sigma Nu's national chapter said in a statement Monday, according to WVEC-TV.

Reading, "Rowdy And Fun! Hope your baby girl is ready for a good time," "Freshman daughter drop off" and "Go ahead and drop off mom too," the sexually suggestive posters reportedly targeted incoming female freshmen.

The banners near the university in Norfolk, Va., since removed, have shaken students and administrators alike.

Beacham said in the statement Monday that some chapter members may have been involved with the banners and the fraternity is cooperating with the administration's investigation, WVEC reports.

"Any fraternity member found to be responsible for this reprehensible display will be held accountable by the fraternity," Beacham added, WVEC reported.

The university released a statement on Monday, condemning the banners.

Old Dominion President John Broderick also posted a message to faculty, staff, students and alumni on the university's Facebook page expressing his "outrage." Broderick said that the university constantly tries to educate its students about sexual assault and sexual harassment, and included a link to student leaders responding to the posters:

"I am outraged about the offensive message directed toward women that was visible for a time on 43rd Street. Our students, campus community and alumni have been offended. While we constantly educate students, faculty and staff about sexual assault and sexual harassment, this incident confirms our collective efforts are still failing to register with some."

While the hysteria over this story by a lot of feminist outlets is ridiculous, I agree with the university cracking down on this behavior. First of all it's in exceptionally poor taste (even though I found the "leave mom too" sign funny) and these buildings are formally associated with the university. Second, while everyone knows that one of the primary functions of college for a lot of people is four years of partying, colleges really should try to maintain some semblance of respect for their ostensible mission of existing for the purpose of education.

My frat did dumb stuff like this in college (2005) and the worst that ever happened was the university clubs manager coming into a meeting and chewing us out. We had brown t-shirts made up of a UPS driver delivering boxes with the quote "XYZ Fraternity: Professional Box Handlers since XXXX" and no one gave a shit.

It's the fat feminist who are pissed about this because they know they are excluded because no fraternity would want them dropped off. This movement is animated by envy.

Take care of those titties for me.

RAPE CULTURE, RAPE CULTURE, RAPE CULTURE! What has this world come to? I'm so offended!

Joking aside, I laughed at the banners. Fraternities just need to be smart about the kind of stuff they post on social media or on banners during different events. Like kaotic said, they need to prevent a false rape accusation that screwed over UVA and its fraternity system.

This was in really bad taste and I 100 percent agree with them suspending the fraternity.

It just blatantly makes the University look bad.

Sometimes you have to be aware of the climate you're in. I thought the signs were hilarious, but when you rely on University money you have to realize putting something like that on your building is fucking stupid.

The wording (I.e. "drop off mom too " etc ) sounds to me like this is a setup with intentions to inflame (like drawing swastikas on churches when the peep is p.o.c.).

Funny shit but they deserve some punishment for sure.

They were asking for it......just like those freshmen daughters!

If a sorority did something similar it would be called "empowering" and any attempt to punish would be called "slut shaming."

Take care of those titties for me.

It's just kids being kids. I don't agree with the message being displayed on huge signs (talk about cock-blocking yourselves) but Jesus christ the hammer just keeps coming down so quickly these days.

Whether or not they had the sign is irrelevant, we all know what goes on in college regardless.

A complete overreaction. Just go tell them to take it down.

I'm shaken. I can't believe what those signs said. I'm totally, like, shaken.

..... I hope they invite me to one of their parties.

I'd rather have signs like these than the "Come to Jesus" poster boards people are bringing to campus.

If it doesn't fit, force it... If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

It's definitely stupid to do, but the outrage is just as bad.

And the denial of parents everywhere is worse. Your freshman daughter is getting fucked, deal with it.

I'm sure more details will arise, but 'suspension' is a pretty vague term in this case. Usually suspension comes in light of severe allegations of hazing, discrimination, sexual misconduct etc. When a fraternity is suspended (usually for at least 1-2 years) it means that all operations are suspended completely.

My frat was put on social probation (a moderate punishment, less than a suspension) for allegations of drugs and hazing; basically we couldn't officially have parties for a year. If this fraternity gets a worse punishment than mine did for a couple signs then it's just another sign of the cultural Marxist grip on academia. Sure, it's in poor taste, and the leadership of the organization must be nonexistent, but remember these kids are just 18-22. No reason to crush their fraternity because of this.

Edit: Additionally, college administrations always overreact to stuff like this because they have balls the size of Bruce... I mean Caitlyn Jenner. Old Dominion, not a school in the spotlight by any means, suddenly came under national scrutiny for this. They panicked, and wanted to prove to everyone that they are 'tolerant' and punish people who say mean things. Otherwise, they're going to lose a ton of $$$ from tuition.

This joke had gone back for years, no doubt. Only today has it become a problem and news.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

I don't find the university's actions objectionable in this case. This doesn't fall into the category of SJW enforced political correctness. It's merely a business protecting its revenue stream. Guess who pays the outrageous tuition for these private liberal arts colleges? Fathers. I'm not sure there is anything more insulting for a man than a taunt that his daughter is going to be used as a sex object and that he can leave his wife too while he's at it. The fact that the taunt is based in truth makes it all the worse. We're most insulted precisely by those things that are true.

So yeah, if I'm a college administrator, I'm going to be furious that a bunch of dipshits are imprinting this kind of message in the minds of fathers who are deciding where to spend their tuition money. The last kind of association I want my school to have in the minds of potential customers is "the place where my daughter is going to be banged out by frat boys." Harvard and the like has enough going for it to survive this kind of thing. A place like "Old Dominion" that nobody has ever heard of before now cannot. I guarantee you that at this point, 80% of people who have heard of this school have heard of it precisely because of this sign, and this is one of those few cases where not all publicity is good publicity. So while I don't blame college kids for doing what college kids do, I also completely understand the decision of the admins in this particular case.

I wasn't into the Greek scene in college, but this outrage is ridiculous.

Twenty years ago those signs would be a center piece in an R rated comedy with a plot of "free-willing, good guy, college boys" versus the uptight, conservative Dean - the face of the academic establishment: complete with the movie's stars making rounds on MTV's TRL and having one year burst of stardom.

The irony is only lost on those who spent their functioning hours in a circle jerk of self-congratulatory victimhood. The pendulum has swung to such a degree that SJWs have replaced the Religious Right as the West's morality police.

This is funny.

I'm pretty surprised though as I was in Norfolk all day today, and didn't overhear anyone talking about this. Especially since I didn't hear it from my barber, who keeps me updated of what's going on in the city.

Second fraternity gets pinched. SJWs HATE fraternities because they don't accept liberal indoctrination.

Quote:Quote:

A day after Old Dominion’s Sigma Nu caused some controversy with some “sexually suggestive” banners hung in front of their house, a Middle Tennessee State University fraternity has taken down a sign that briefly hung in front of their house as well.

The banner outside of MTSU’s Sigma Pi read: “Freshman Girls Info Center” — and that’s hilarious.

Apparently not hilarious to their nationals, though, who suspended the fraternity shortly after the news broke.
