Mezcal datasheet-a spirit which doesn't cause hangovers

Sounds interesting.
A friend of mine is on vacation in Mexico right now, will tell him to bring some Mezcal and report back.
Don´t think I have seen that in Europe before.

I lived in Guanajuato for a few months and would ride my motorcycle up the mountain to a town called Santa Rosa where this farmer made Mezcal for sale locally only.

I might require directions to this farmers place. Going to Guanajuato in October.

Mezcal datasheet-a spirit which doesn't cause hangovers

My cousin was just in the office and took a shot and freaked out. He ran out to the garbage can and started having convulsions in it or something then he came back in all red looking and said "never again" "that shit fucked me up" then left.

He drinks that nasty Canadian mist like water so I'm confused.

I was always under the impression that the main cause of hangovers was the body trying to expel various chemical toxins such as Acetaldehyde. When someone drinks a lot, the body takes longer to remove the unwanted chemicals and the liver is taxed. The longer these toxins remain in your blood stream (at a high concentration), the more likely you are to experience nausea, vomiting, etc. do.

So it would seem the only way Mezcal would fail to cause a hangover is that the liver is either able to process Mezcal much more rapidly than other spirits, or that Mescal somehow lacks the toxin-load that other liquors have.

Any doctors or scientists here that would like to weigh in? I'm fascinated by (and enjoy reading/learning about) substances that are able to be used recreationally but that do not damage the body the way that drugs like Cocaine, endocrine-disrupting opiates, MDMA etc.

If Mezcal truly is non-hangover inducing (or even just a spirit that is less conducive to hangovers), than it will likely pique the interest of many guys here who are trying to have fun and drink while still looking after their health.

To add to this explanation here is a picture of the chemical pathway for alcohol breakdown. The pathway shown below is the pathway every type of alcohol that you consume takes. Acetaldehyde is the cause of hangovers when there is a high concentration in the blood stream. The build-up in the system is from the slow breakdown (due to low activity (km) of the enzyme responsible the process) of Acetaldehyde to Acetate. Based on this Mezcal will give you a hangover as long as it contains alcohol (ethanol) and you drink large amounts of it. It is unavoidable unfortunately.

Just for the closing night. Its wall to wall packed with young hotties from all over the Bajío region.

A data sheet on the Cervantino festival is on my to-do list.

To remain on topic: Last time I was down there I tried a 100% agave mezcal from hacienda Torimoro. It really put a song in my heart.

As has been said, you don't normally mix it, you drink it like wine. But if you must mix it, you can do club soda and lime. I like mine that way. But again, thats not the traditional way of drinking it.

Not to derail the thread, but has anybody tried the Hangover cure Blowfish? The packs contain two tablets that work like Alka-Selzer; you drop them in water and it fizzes into a solution. I have used this stuff plenty of times and it works like a charm. A few weeks ago I had the worst hangover ever from a bachelor party, took the tablets with water, and was at 100% in a matter of minutes. It's available at your local CVS or Walgreens, the website is below:

As a note, I have also had Mezcal when I was in Puerto Vallarta Mexico (they were giving out free shots in the shops) and didn't feel drunk at all the next day. My buddy drank a whole bottle throughout the day.

I never cared for effervescents . It's just baking soda, caffeine, and aspirin. I have all of those ingredients already.

This drink reminds me of Kava.

I got a gnarly headache from drinking mezcal (probably lower end) @ the bar. Very smokey and peaty taste.

It tasted like a whiskey tequila anejo.

All the parts I didn't like.

I haven't tried a blanco mezcal so I can't definetely say.

There's a bar that I regularly go to and they once offered me some mezcal that they got in, weren't even selling the stuff, just offering it to regulars. I remember that smoky purity and the sensation of it just evaporating on my palate, leaving a tingling sensation and making you reach for another sip.

I need to get back into this stuff, thanks Veloce for starting the thread.

Basically if you consume a small amount of baking soda, some tea, and pop an aspirin you will get the same benefit as taking that product above.

Baking soda lowers the bloods PH if I recall correctly. It also is an antacid which calms an unsettled stomach. Basically a three fold way to kick that annoying hangover.

Kava is a west pacific drink made from a root that is made into a tea. It gives all of the intoxicating qualities of alcohol without being detectable as alcohol and without the hangover. Mezcal however contains alcohol, but supposedly doesn't have a hangover effect.

Had my fair share of a bottle of Mezcal Blanco last night, called Whaka Espadín. Highly recommended for all Tequila Silver lovers who have not yet tried.

That said, I had a hangover from hell today. Though it probably had more to do with the quantity and almost no sleep.
