This is actually a pretty good move, but don't go where is a lot of competition for work. These jobs can't be offshored. I'm glad to hear you aren't wanting to do any computer stuff.

When I first posted this thread, I was mostly focused on traveling while I'm young. Additionally, I would be living with dudes in a dorm room for all of those years, I still wanna enjoy those years somewhat.

Take this post with a grain of salt but it's a shame you got exposed to this forum at such a young age. There are a few good things about it but it tends to view the world in a far too stark manner which is not necessarily good.

Anyway, the rest of your post didn't make much sense. You want to join the army but only if Trump gets elected so that you don't have to face combat duty? I would say it's close to the opposite.

You want to go down the trade route for the mobility. I guarantee you a professional skill-set will offer you far greater mobility b/w any large city within the USA and if you play your cards right internationally as well. Chicago is a great choice, it's got a localized economy to survive but keep in mind the rest of the Mid-West is categorically and comprehensively fucked and is going to get shafted so bad in the next few decades it's going to be fucking grim if you plan on settling there.

You are also thinking too far ahead, get a niche skill set and you will make money to retire at 45 0r 59 if you want. Work two years in your 20's, take a year off, do that again if you want - the choices are endless and your family is telling you the right thing, Computer Science is the best option.

The field is vast, it isn't just building apps.

Anyway, the truth is you really can't decide what you want to do or what you want to build a career in at 18. Your best bet is to get a degree that is fairly quantitative and maybe a basic programming course thrown in as all your options are still open after graduation unless you fancy yourself as a bohemian painter.

Agreed. The fact that he doesn't want to go to university bothers me - he's missing out on a lot of experiences that would shape what he wants to do with his life in the future, and also missing out on a strong sense of community which is important for a stable lifestyle down the line. This is a very "solo" route being taken.. working as a welder randomly, then traveling around alone..

Again the basic trades are not a terrible idea but the ages of 18-23 should be spent EXPOSING yourself to stuff, not racking up money for no purpose.

Hey guys, saw this thread got bumped, and its well over due for an update

ALOT of shit has changed in my life in the last year or so, some for better some for worse. I did a bit of lurking over the last year on RVF but ive had a lot of shit going on so I didnt really come on here for the most part.

So fall of 2016, it was senior year of high school and my occasional drug use spiraled a bit out of control. that winter me and my cousin had an idea where we would sell drugs and use that as bankroll to fund a crazy summer on the spanish coast. This plan was working until about march, when I caught a case for selling LSD. Fortunately I was still a minor at the time, so I got somewhat of a slap on the wrist, 6 months probation, so I could no longer travel that upcoming summer. I pretty much wrote off the military so i doubled down on the selling so i could make enough money to travel for the entirety of 2018. Summer of 2017 comes along, and I got caught with a bunch of shit, and a fat wad of cash. Luckily because I was only 18 I was eligible for a "diversion" program where as long as I stay out of trouble until Sept 2018 itll be totally dropped from my record.

Currently Im living a few hours from home in apartment with some friends, working, barely scraping by.

As of last week I got a better job (paving/masonry) that will allow me to save enough money by winter to buy two things; a motorcycle, and a winter spent in Brazil.

Another great thing going for me is about 20k in crypto that ive grown from 10k since january when Bitcoin started shitting the bed. Id rather not cash this out now. Im hoping to grow it into at least 50k within a few years. Im saving it in the event I come across any sort of golden investment opportunity. Either that or do a coding bootcamp this winter and start work as a web developer in the hopes that within a few years ill have a location independent income stream. Once Im off probation in september im gonna shoot over to a navy/AF recruiter office and see if i can possibly get waivers to join. I scored a 97 on the asvab in Dec 2016 and until I caught a rap sheet the navy wanted to recruit me for the Nuke program. I still stay up at night wondering how my life would be if i had stayed clean and took that opportunity. One of my friends did right out of high school and hes stacking crazy money. Its the direction that im recommending to my little brother.

As of now im in a much better place than even a few months ago when i was getting high nightly. The area im in is getting butt fucked by the opioid epidemic, so most people Ive met here are tweakers/junkies who've ruined their lives. Being 18 I see that even though ive burned bridges I still have the chance to live a pretty kickass life.

Ive converted it into a currency thats tethered to USD value. I think Im gonna throw some of it into stocks. My current job is ideal as it allows me to live on my own, save money for travel and throw a little extra into the bank, along with 3 months off per year for travel. I may not be in line to be making crazy money in the next few years or have a totally location independent income but Im pumped to have a job that enables me to live on my own and travel a good amount
