Histrionic Personality Disorder and why you should know about it

Ive seen the term "histrionic" used by a few members in posts here and there but I think there may be a lot of people who may not know it or be very familiar with it's real meaning. So here is what I hope is a useful post

Histrionics

What it is

How prevalent it really is

How its affecting us all in game (and just every other facet of their lives where women are a factor)

A few years ago I was researching emotional problems in an attempt to understand what was going on with (a now ex) LTR. She was pretty fucking hot (thin tall blond former swimsuit/ lingerie model)...but that's another story.

Nevertheless I stumbled on Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) and was quickly fucking STUNNED. The more I read about HPD the more I understood what the fucking problem is with most women and looking back could see the problem with almost every single person that was or had been a "negative" in my life.

I was also stunned by the fact that it isn't a more widely discussed. As I wrote in the open there are probably a lot of people here somewhat, if not very familiar with the term but for those that might not be...you should be. I suspect there will be more than a few "aha" to "holy shit" moments like there were for me.

Why should we care?. Because what I've learned is that "game" is really just about overcoming and/ or exploiting HPD's in order to bang

This following is a compiliation taken from several sources including WEBMD, Psychology Today, Wikipedia

This disorder is more common in women than in men and usually is evident by adolescence or early adulthood.

Histrionic personality disorder is one of a group of conditions called "Cluster B" or "dramatic" personality disorders. People with these disorders have intense, unstable emotions and distorted self-images. For people with histrionic personality disorder, their self-esteem depends on the approval of others and does not arise from a true feeling of self-worth. They have an overwhelming desire to be noticed, and often behave dramatically or inappropriately to get attention. The word histrionic means "dramatic or theatrical."

Individuals with this disorder often have impaired relationships with same-sex friends because their sexually provocative interpersonal style may seem a threat to their friends’ relationships. These individuals may also alienate friends with demands for constant attention. They often become depressed and upset when they are not the center of attention.

People with histrionic personality disorder may crave novelty, stimulation, and excitement and have a tendency to become bored with their usual routine. These individuals are often intolerant of, or frustrated by, situations that involve delayed gratification, and their actions are often directed at obtaining immediate satisfaction. Although they often initiate a job or project with great enthusiasm, their interest may lag quickly.

Longer-term relationships may be neglected to make way for the excitement of new relationships.

A personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates from the norm of the individual’s culture. The pattern is seen in two or more of the following areas: cognition; affect; interpersonal functioning; or impulse control. The enduring pattern is inflexible and pervasive across a broad range of personal and social situations. It typically leads to significant distress or impairment in social, work or other areas of functioning. The pattern is stable and of long duration, and its onset can be traced back to early adulthood or adolescence.

What Are the Symptoms of Histrionic Personality Disorder?

In many cases, people with histrionic personality disorder have good social skills; however, they tend to use these skills to manipulate others so that they can be the center of attention.

A person with this disorder might also:

Dress provocatively and/or exhibit inappropriately seductive or flirtatious behavior
Shift emotions rapidly
Act very dramatically, as though performing before an audience, with exaggerated emotions and expressions, yet appears to lack sincerity
Be overly concerned with physical appearance
Constantly seek reassurance or approval
Be gullible and easily influenced by others
Be excessively sensitive to criticism or disapproval
Have a low tolerance for frustration and be easily bored by routine, often beginning projects without finishing them or skipping from one event to another
Not think before acting
Make rash decisions
Be self-centered and rarely show concern for others
Have difficulty maintaining relationships, often seeming fake or shallow in their dealings with others
Threaten or attempt suicide to get attention

Does this sound like anyone you've known?

What Causes Histrionic Personality Disorder? (Im not a doctor but I suspect it's having a uterus)

The exact cause of histrionic personality disorder is not known, but many mental health professionals believe that both learned and inherited factors play a role in its development. For example, the tendency for histrionic personality disorder to run in families suggests that a genetic susceptibility for the disorder might be inherited. However, the child of a parent with this disorder might simply be repeating learned behavior. Other environmental factors that might be involved include a lack of criticism or punishment as a child, positive reinforcement that is given only when a child completes certain approved behaviors, and unpredictable attention given to a child by his or her parent(s), all leading to confusion about what types of behavior earn parental approval. Personality disorders also usually develop in relation to individual temperament and psychological styles and ways people learn to cope with stress while growing up.

How Is Histrionic Personality Disorder Diagnosed?
If signs of this personality disorder are present, the doctor will begin an evaluation by performing a complete medical and psychiatric history. If physical symptoms are present, a physical exam and laboratory tests (such as neuroimaging studies or blood tests) may also be recommended to assure that a physical illness is not causing any symptoms that may be present.

If the doctor finds no physical reason for the symptoms, he or she might refer the person to a psychiatrist or psychologist, health care professionals who are specially trained to diagnose and treat mental illnesses. Psychiatrists and psychologists use specially designed interview and assessment tools to evaluate a person for a personality disorder.

How Is Histrionic Personality Disorder Treated?
In general, people with histrionic personality disorder do not believe they need therapy. They also tend to exaggerate their feelings and to dislike routine, which makes following a treatment plan difficult. However, they might seek help if depression -- possibly associated with a loss or a failed relationship -- or another problem caused by their actions causes them distress.

Psychotherapy (a type of counseling) is generally the treatment of choice for histrionic personality disorder. The goal of treatment is to help the individual uncover the motivations and fears associated with his or her thoughts and behavior, and to help the person learn to relate to others in a more positive way.

Medication might sometimes be used as supplemental treatment for distressing symptoms that might occur with this disorder, such as depression and anxiety.

What Complications Are Associated With Histrionic Personality Disorder?
Histrionic personality disorder can affect a person's social, professional, or romantic relationships and how they react to losses or failures. People with this disorder are also at higher risk than the general population to suffer from depression.

What Is the Outlook for People With Histrionic Personality Disorder?
Many people with this disorder are able to function well socially and at work. Those with severe cases, however, might experience significant problems in their daily lives

Can Histrionic Personality Disorder Be Prevented?
Although prevention of the histrionic personality disorder might not be possible, treatment can allow a person who is prone to this disorder to learn more productive ways of dealing with situations.

In conclusion:

The pussy is that thing between a women's legs (and our goal)
The cunt is everything else that surrounds the pussy
HPD is what surrounds (creates) the cunt

That's a lot to get through for the prize

In all seriousness, I believe I read before the "Hist" in "Histrionic" means womb, since this condition is so common in women. The same root word in "Hysterectomy."

Take care of those titties for me.

Sounds like the female version of narcissism. A lot of these disorders are worth knowing so you can navigate accordingly. I see there are some threads on others, I shall have a quick read.

Well, like any descriptions of disorders, it evolves. From first Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to its last implementation, what constituties this disorder, it has changed quite a bit. With all the disorders listed in the DSM you will probably find that any person on the planet would qualify to suffer from some mild type of disorder. I think you might exaggerate its importance - afterall, psychiatrists make, approve, change and abandon definitions of disorders from one iteration of the DSM to another. It just shows how difficult is to pin it down, what a paritcular diosrder is and is not. It's assumed that 2% of population is affected by histrionic personality disorder as per the definition in DSM-V. However, knowledge of most important disorders can be useful, though to make informed and adequate diagnosis very difficult.

When I look at the frequency of encountering and / or witnessing the many (if not all) of the "symptoms" below, to some degree or another, in my life and many of the experiences shared in this forum, I don't believe the importance and prevalence has been exaggerated.

From a purely game perspective I believe understanding this can be very useful. For example let's take the ones I've highlighted below.

Dress provocatively and/or exhibit inappropriately seductive or flirtatious behavior
Shift emotions rapidly
Act very dramatically, as though performing before an audience, with exaggerated emotions and expressions, yet appears to lack sincerity
Be overly concerned with physical appearance
Constantly seek reassurance or approval
Be gullible and easily influenced by others
Be excessively sensitive to criticism or disapproval

Have a low tolerance for frustration and be easily bored by routine, often beginning projects without finishing them or skipping from one event to another
Not think before acting
Make rash decisions
Be self-centered and rarely show concern for others
Have difficulty maintaining relationships, often seeming fake or shallow in their dealings with others
Threaten or attempt suicide to get attention

This goes directly to why it's so easy to get cock blocked by a chick's friends when one's trying to cut her out the herd for a bang. Her fear of her friend's disapproval makes it easy to derail what might otherwise be good experience for both of you. I can't count how many times this happened to me.

Recognizing the source of the problem was the first step in correcting it. Now when I'm working on a chick at a bar or lounge who's with friends, if things are "grooving" I automatically am thinking ahead to try prevent a possible cock block. I try to isolate as early as possible and lay the prevention groundwork with statements like "You seem like a girl who's strong and smart enough to think for herself and not care what other people think. Am I right?" In essence I'm trying to "inoculate" her against her own HPD...which she most likely has to a certain degree. Getting her more interested in my approval than her friends' is the formula

Oh my. Fuck, fuck, fuck. So many red flags. Yep, I always knew subconsciously that a couple of my last LTR's were crazy bitches, now that I've seen all of these traits in one place, I know it for sure. Science, bitch.

EDIT:
Recognizing HPD from a girl's use of social media? How about this:
- deleting her pics which don't get a zillion likes in an hour
- locking her FB profile pic for likes and comments... "yeah, look at me, want me, obsess over me, slide into my DM's"
- constantly posting provocative pics
- posting "deep" quotes, song links etc. - seeks validation, wants to present herself as an intellectual, and not a slut
- ranting in posts about general topics she knows nothing about just to get attention (politics, sports, economy)

There is one woman of mine who has this for sure. If only there were a way to reduce the disorder's intensity short of extended psychotherapy. She'll never go for that.

Exactly. Its no coincidence that removing a woman's womb is called a "hysterectomy"

Great thread Papa.

I am a magnet for this type of women, I think because I am calm and level and they find that reassuring.

I am also attracted to the hot mess this disorder is usually packed with.

We have spoken about this before I remember, but you called it, it all comes down to this:

its exhausting and if the juice aint worth the squeeze...fuck that

I wish I was aware of this before I met my ex.

Bolded all the traits she displayed.

Now that I have read up about this, especially the bolded, underlined and italized one is a dead giveaway of this disorder. She did this all the time and it drove me insane.

"I want to learn to draw!" - Spends $200 on expensive drawing equipment, two weeks later I see it collecting dust in the corner.

Me: "Didn't you want to learn to draw?"
Her: *snaps at me* "Shut up! Later!"

"I want to learn how to make cocktails!" - Buys expensive cocktail making equipment, two weeks later, collects dust in the corner.

"I want to learn how to surf!" - Buys surfboard, dust, corner.

"I want to ..." Dust, corner.

I can think of several other people I know who always start projects and then get bored of them. They also correlate with most of the other traits listed here.

Great that this thread has been revived.

Histrionic Personality Disorder and why you should know about it

This is a great post by PapaT and a well-timed bump.

In the past I was more introverted and dated women who exhibited more HPD and NPD. As I became more confident and out-going, I ended up attracting women with more borderline (BPD) tendencies rather than fully histrionic / narcissistic ones. But there is overlap - they're both Cluster B personality disorder.

If you're feeling far off your center (mentally, emotionally, physically, sexually) then take a week, or two, or three, or however long you need to regain your center. With Cluster B disorder and psychological disorder in general, we can become unbalanced so quickly it's unbelievable. You won't know what sanity and health feels like until you cut the crazy out of your life for long enough to DETOX from the effects and then to DECOMPRESS. I've experienced this recently where I went full NO-CONTACT for three weeks to detox from a very destabilizing family situation. Another week from there I could feel a space open up inside me to allow contact in order to see how it affects me.

As PT mentioned and just to reiterate:

Quote:Quote:

Cluster B personality disorders are characterized by dramatic, overly emotional or unpredictable thinking or behavior and interactions with others. They include antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder.

So there's a variety of disorder in this category. I believe it's Paracelsus who quotes The Last Psychiatrist on how prevalent narcissism is in 'modern' society. Dysfunctional women embody this to a T with endless sources of validation as well as frustration if it doesn't meet their insane (and endless) expectations.

Essentially, the less potential a woman has for self-reflection after or even during an emotional outburst, the farther she is down the Cluster B disorder spectrum and the farther you need to be away from her. Each branch has specific traits, but irrationality, instability, and an unwillingness to take responsibility for one's actions seem to be key traits.

I'd highly recommend every man who reads this to watch Aurini's excellent / insightful Personality Types and related Personality disorder. Spend some time understand where you may fall in his '4 humours' from the classical Greek sense (or the TMNT / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a current analogy!). I'm more the choleric type (as is he) - the executive, oriented toward objects/projects and problem-solving. The dysfunctional expression would be sociopathy/psychopathy. He specifics talks about how a (Cluster B) borderline woman got him locked up for a false DV charge. This echoes experiences I've had (minus the lock-up).

and the specific 'Histrionic' personality disorder:

Definitely understand your own psychological / behavioral temperament and be aware of histrionic / borderline / narcissistic tendencies that can get severely dysfunctional. I'm actually somewhat checked out of dating right now and focusing on business / personal development / fitness. The level of crazy is a bit too high for my tastes at the moment...

Histrionic Personality Disorder and why you should know about it

By the way, this is a little off-topic, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND everyone to watch Aurini's full 'Personality Types and Disorder' series. It's funny that, for whatever it's worth, the likes/dislikes ratio is quite positive for all videos until you get to

THE BORDERLINE!

Then it goes to shit and the likes / dislikes is nearly 1:1! The video has the MOST views of the entire series. The comments are so spicy, it's incredible.. and yeah it's from borderline women who don't want people to criticize them for their disorder! KEK. Those women are out there.. and they're often hidden behind 'she's mysterious and intriguing' allure. We've all dated them, or grown up with them, or lived with them, or been married to them and had children with them. This is the false-rape accuser, the gas-lighter extraordinaire, the mind-fuck master of them all.

WATCH THE VIDEO - and the entire series - and give it a much-needed and deserved thumbs-up if you find it useful. And share the series with your brothers - they need to understand, especially in this day and age.

Just escaped one after a 3-year long nightmare relationship. I cannot state this clear enough! These people will RUIN your life! The trauma is real. You won't know if you are coming or going. I would recommend that ANY man at least do some minimal research on BPD.

If you know what to look for, you will save yourself months or years of sheer crazy. I could write a book on this. I only discovered what it was after a little over one year into the relationship.

When I read all the traits, they jumped out at me and I knew in that moment with almost 99% certainty what I was not dealing with. STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE!!!! If you have one in your life... you MUST structure their lives and set boundaries as if they are a 3 year old child. Even then, your life will be hell.

Histrionic Personality Disorder and why you should know about it

We had our own histronic meltdown in at least the most famous thread of the year.

Aurini has some good points, including:

Quote:Quote:

There is no project ... Nothing they can build that they can fall in love with... So they find themselves a project. And that project becomes other people.

Gentlemen, I present to you such a project: Project Belgrade Summer '18.

In my estimation the personality is formed by people finding out what operates in the world to get what they want: things, attention, sex, status etc. When whatever they learned to operate in the world (particularly with their parents) didn't get what they wanted then their behaviour becomes what is classified as mental illness. It becomes a negative feedback loop which tilts ultimately towards self destruction, where they find some strange therapeutic value in making themselves worse.

With histrionics it seems that the behaviour can be created by neglect. Robin Williams is a good example, of someone who was raised in considerable isolation and learned to get attention from over-the-top, childish, attention-seeking theatrics. It culminated in him becoming the least funny man in America, sliding down into self-destruction and death.

They crave some real connection with people, but the way they learn from childhood is to make connections with histrionics. Relationships tend to have an expiry date of less than a year.
