Can someone recommend a straight razor, like in Goldfinger's post above?

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

For discounted mail-order shaving products, Harry's seems a bit more premium quality (German manufacture).

Disposable straight razor? is there such a thing, or you mean safety razors.

Maybe he is using a hair shaper as a razor? edit, it's called a shavette.

Dollar Shave Club uses Dorco razors. You can buy them off Amazon for just as cheap and try them rather than being locked into a contract with DSC. I don't like them much because they don't seem well made and don't give a close shave.

I heard advertisements for the Shave club on the radio and was thinking about joining.

They mail you a pack of 4 razor blades every month at a price that is significantly lower than the blades that I currently use(Gillette Sensor) and they offer different blade qualities at different prices $1, $6 and $9 options. Gillette is costing me about $14 for a pack of 4 blades.

I just wanted to know if someone had some insight on this.

Thanks

I didn't know this.

Going to cancel my DSC subscription, use up my remaining blades, then decide if I want to use a safety razor or Dorco.

Thanks.

I second Feather razor blades. I bought a 100 pack maybe 3 years ago and they are still going strong. I shave every other day (generally) and replace after 6 or 7 shaves. I also had a 6 month period where I had a beard.

In the end, it cost me less than $10 a year to shave and that includes the tube of Proraso I've been nursing.

I think I'm going to go with Traveler and Truth's recommendations and try the safety razor. If that doesn't give me a satisfactory shave, I'll try the $ Shave Club.

UPDATE

Based on comments and recommendations to this post, I shaved using a safety razor for the first time this morning . I was very pleased with the results, but I feel like such an ass, not switching sooner and wasting all that money on "high end" disposables over the years.

I shaved my face and head and can't tell any difference in the smoothness from a disposable. The heavier weight of the safety razor made it easy to cut through tough stubble patches.

Anyone thinking about switching to a safety razor should do it.

Best purchase i ever made was a safety razor (double edged grandpa style). It came with 100 different types of blades.

That and a brush and mug and you are set. Cost me about $50 but lasts a year easily with better shaves.

The trick is shave in cold water. Makes shaving easier and the blades last way longer. something about molecules or what not in the steel or some such.

I have a shavette as well, disposable straight razor. Its pretty easy to use but more time consuming and easier to get cut with. I dont use it every day, only like once a week when i want to invest a bit more time in the shave.

This goes against every wet shaving guide out there. Warm water, always. It opens your pores and softens the hair.

This is what i think when i hear straight razor: [Image: dsc_0692-1.jpg]

I am definitely in the safety razor camp for my head thou. That's -$15 every other week at the barbers replaced with on $25 safety razor and $20 for 100 razor blades.

tip: use a new one everyday unless you're using the Feather razor blades (They are extra sharp) [img][Image: F1.jpg][/img]

I don't shave often but when I do I use a straight edge Dovo. It's a great shave, and I enjoy the process of sharpening / stropping my blade, I like the old timey feel of applying shaving soap to my face with a badger hair brush, and I like not cutting myself with the multi blade disposables. I can't recommend straight edges enough

Get a safety razor. This is the only way to go when you want to save money and a high quality shave. With the right technique, you will be able to get a close shave without any irritation.

I use the Merkur C34 and Feather blades.

Just try it for yourself. You will be pleasantly surprised.

I take cold shower too but this cold shaving will work even if you just rinse your face first and dont shower at all.

I've tried with cold water. It was terrible. Maybe for men with very thin hair that is an option. My facial hairs are very thick and the shave was very irratating and all around awful. Could not get close without cutting my face up. None of these are issues with warm water.

Indeed, I tried with cold water and it didn't turn out well at all. As for showering wash with hot water, then rinse with cold water to close up the pores. You avoid acne this way.

Yeah. It just feels like the blade rips the hair out of my chin instead of cutting them. I always cut myself when i don't have time to warm the hair on my face properly and i have to make multiple strokes on the same area, leaving the skin irritated.

I use the dollar shave club. The shaving butter and after shave products are fantastic. The blades are excellent value as well.

Before I shave, I steam a washcloth in my vegetable cooker, then let it heat my face while I read the paper.
I also use hot lather. I'm not really sure if either is more effective, but it sure is calming in the morning.
I don't shave every day, maybe every 3 days, so this sort of regime wouldn't work for someone whose facial hair grows fast.

I also switched to this about a year ago. Blades are under 10 cents each and its a great shave. I use the Astra blades. Will not go back to the plastic mass market overpriced chemical coated crap again.

I always cut myself when I shave with warm or hot water. Guess it depends on the person.

If you want to save money on shaving, get a Safety Razor and shave like a man.

Then buy a huge pack of butterfly razor blades like these:

This box costs 9 dollars. This box lasted a year for me. Buy it on Amazon.

You do the math. Dollar Shave Club is a gimmick, just lower quality blades in the form of a group buy. The safety razor won't cut as close as a 6 blade Gillete or ball technology whatever, (it does come very close though), but it costs a shitload less. You could use a brand new blade everyday and throw them away. That's how cheap we are talking here.

For black guys, it's awesome because it will not cut too close so that you get razor bumps all over your face, because the super close cut ones make the hair grow inside your skin. You need the hair to be just outside, not cut 100% level with the skin. Once I switched to these I stopped buying razor bump creams. Don't get me wrong some of those creams are good (if you know what to buy), but they are not easy to find in all stores. Not to mention they spoil in the bottles and stop working as well as when you first bought them.

I got one of these razor setups and it was the best shaving decision I ever made. One thing I would recommend (especially at first) is to keep a disposable like a Gillette handy too. Take a first pass with the safety razor and do a quick clean up with the disposable. The disposable used after a safety will last 3x longer.

Dollar Shave Club caved to the SJWs and went the cuck progressive route by pulling their advertising from Hannity, just like Keurig did:

Oh shit, an old post of mine. Here's an update on my routine these days:

Shave Secret - love this shit, cheaper and better than any old shaving foam. 4-5 drops to shave, maybe a few more if there's a lot of hair. A tiny bottle lasts for 4 months or more, and is smaller to boot. It's $5-8 online, you'll find it for $3-4 apiece at Walmart. I buy 3-4 of these at Walmart when I pass through, which isn't often, and it lasts me over a year. I've tried other shaving oils and everything else is crap.

Generic safety razor, Feather blades - there was a learning curve to shaving with this without cutting myself. First 1-2 shaves were rough and I was left with 4-5 cuts on my face. I got better after 5-6 shaves, down to maybe 1 cut if I rushed. now I can usually get through it just fine. You want a single blade for taking off long hair that would clog up a cartridge. After that, you can touch up with the cartridge to get any stray hairs you might've not clipped entirely.

I'll even use a safety razor for a first pass to bushwhack in certain other areas. (warning: not for beginners or the faint of heart.)

Dorco 2-blade replaceable razors (same as DSC). When I'm in a big rush, traveling, and the hair is short. Just about impossible to cut yourself with these. I just ordered 32 cartridges and a spare handle from Dorco online. With a discount coupon it came out to $21 or so...that's like $0.65 per cartridge that lasts me a week. Can't be beat.

I've experimented with a cheapo straight razor, but the results weren't much better vs. the safety razor, and there was blood. Feather blades will cut you if you just look at them funny.

Sure gets the testosterone flowing, though.

In case you do cut yourself, a salicylic acid face wash, followed with aluminum pencil, can't hurt.
