I did about 6 years of Judo as a teenager/young adult. It kept me in shape and made me tough.

Judo is not a martial art, its a set of rules and governing body (Kodokan) for competing in Ju Jitsu as a sport. Judo revolves around competition. The colored belt system used in other martial arts originates in Judo where it was (and still is) used to categorize competitors in tournaments by skill level. If you never compete you will never progress past white belt. Serious Judoka have similar training cycles to boxers or other combat sport competitors, including watching videos of upcoming opponents, traveling to train with top instructors around the country and cutting weight like wrestlers. Almost all top Judo competitors cross train some BJJ now. When I did it (late 90s) there was already a great deal of interest in BJJ as a competitive edge, but unless your were in LA, NYC or Hawaii there were no schools.

If you like grappling sports Judo is fun, although it takes a toll on your joints after a while. If you are more concerned about pure fighting skill you will need to combine it with a live striking art. Western boxing, kick boxing and Thai boxing all combine with Judo very well. One of the toughest people I've ever known in my life was a Judo blackbelt and former golden glove fighter.
I think a lot of people play sports in order to keep fit. But if you seriously want to achieve success in some kind of sport, then you need to put a lot of effort. Judo and other sports require maximum concentration from you and work. As you said your joints may suffer. I know what I am talking about because for many years at school I was engaged in American football and these are very large loads on your body. I often had to look for options to solve the problems associated with my back. It was the back that bothered me the most. But having tried many different types of help, I found a backsupportbelt that helped me solve my problem. The pain disappeared and I began not only walking normally but also playing American football. Such injuries may prevent us from doing what we love, but in contrast to such injuries, there should be such sports belts. One has only to feel the full force of this belt, as it will immediately become easier for you.

I have been training BJJ and really love it! Im addicted.

There is a Krav Maga camp coming to my area this summer. I wont be able to train Krav after the camp consistently but would plan to attend camps and travel top train periodicaly. What are your guys thaughts on this? My end goal is to be formidable in a street fight. Not worried about competition etc. and think Krav Maga could be a perfect complement . What striking style is best paired with BJJ?

^^
Your best bet is to not fight and know how to deescalate situations and maintain situational awareness but to answer your question based on what I have done boxing, FMA, systema, and Muay Thai are great for striking.

Chicagofire.

What are your thaughts on systema?

I am considering either systema or Krav and maybe both as I will have to travel periodicly to train either. Krav Global is the one offering the imersion camp im considering.

Im in Estonia and near russia and understand systema is a russian art. So it would be a cool trip to go to moscow to train systema for a few weeks.

I trained BJJ again yesterday and was very frustrated and anxious about life and normal shit that everyone deals with. After the class I felt so relaxed and calm, it basicly better than any medicine a doctor could give me.

Systema is similiar to BJJ in that calming effect. I would come into class angry at the world and after class I would be calm. It wouldn't be out of the realm for some schools to have a health portion in their classes. To repeat myself it is effective as a self defense martial art.

Before you head out to moscow just be aware that systema is pretty macho. Even the light "surface" punches I would receive stung. I have been punched in the mouth as well as got dizzy and banged my head against the wall because there were too many students in the small room. Look up Russian whip massages to understand how macho the system is. I could only imagine it's even more macho in Moscow. Just see how you like systema first before you decide it isn't for you.

any self-defense system (including krav maga) should be flinch-based.
systema is flow-based.

so, polar opposites basically.
you can learn a lot from both, if they are taught properly.

I like systema more but that's personal preference.
also it takes longer to "learn" than km.

Anyone know any good YouTube Channels for self-training in boxing/kickboxing/ or muy thai. I purchased a nice punching bag and have boxing gloves. Instad of paying 100$ a month at a boxing club I'd like to self-teach. Anyone have good recommendations?

If you're able to, I would train with Priit Mikhelson if you're interested in BJJ. He's Estonia's first black belt in BJJ and is one fucking smart dude. He is one of the most engaging instructors I've ever worked with, and is tough as shit too.

Thankyou for the suggestion. Hes been on my radar for some time now. As I progress I will make it a priority to absorb some of his knowledge.

If you make it through Estonia, hit me up.
