I'm not particularly convinced that the regular women in the European countries where prostitution is either legal or mostly ignored by the law, feel that they are in competition with pros for men's attention.

And while the prices are probably lower than in the US (I have no idea what the lower price range for non-street whores are there) and the easily accessible choices more plentiful and likely often better looking (lots of pretty Romanian hookers in Germany, Austria etc. for instance), something like 50 Euro for a quickie or 100 Euro for 30-60 minutes (or 20-50 Euro if you go to some of the poor EE countries) is not quite giving it away for free.

The industry slowed down as a result of the recession in 2008. Hookers have been playing a cat and mouse game with cops for decades, but cops have never been more than an inconvenient nuisance for some of them.

A lot of hardworking guys seek out their services regardless of the cops for one reason. Sometimes they just want to bang a good looking girl without ANY of the bullshit that comes with a more legit transaction. If you're a guy who stands to lose too much from a divorce but you want some strange, you don't go banging girls who may come sniffing around later. You pay one who will GTFO when your balls are empty and won't show her face until it's time to empty them again.

Prostitution must be legal - especially in a country like the US they already had tests of legalizing it in Rhode Island for several years. The results were immediate - lower rate of rapes, less crime and probably less thirst.
