The Technology and Gym Help Thread

I'm pretty knowledgeable about weight lifting and technology. I saw there were quite a few questions popping up around the forum. If anyone wants any advice, post here and I'll reply. And if anyone wants any guides made up, let me know.

I am looking for viable alternatives to protein, natural. I want to move away from the protein powder and get it exclusively from food. What combinations can I use, mixing vegetable protein and animal protein to get a surplus of 200 grams per day so I can gain optimal lean muscle?

1. With regards to weight lifting - where can I find videos of people performing exercises, especially compound exercises, with perfect form? Deadlifts, squats, bench presses, olympic lifts, etc

2. Steroids - where can I find well researched, non biased information on the pros and cons of steroids, the types of steroids, their side effects, etc. As well information on new breakthroughs in the steroid market. Where do most athletes get their drugs from? Obviously your weed man is not gonna be your steroid man lol

3. Is there some sort of training regimen out there that's meant to reach "Hannibal Mode"? For those that Haven't seen the video, I'm referring to this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfsTKfUT-RQ . I'm pretty decent on my lifts, but I am absolutely terrible with bodyweight exercises. Is there some sort of routine where the goal is Hannibal Mode?

No offense to you Sammy but when you say you're knowledgable about lifting, what does that mean. I've seen so many people come out in these gym threads with just bad advice espousing it based solely on the fact that they follow their own bad advice so I'm hoping anyone who starts a thread like this or offers advice about health and fitness has some real background in it.

That is some crazy shit. This is something I've been leaning towards myself. I'm starting to realize that being able to throw around big iron weights is all well and good, but true applicable strength in the real world should revolve around your own body. I'm planing on changing up my workout routine so use almost all body weight exercises, and any info would be awesome.

Getting 200g of protein from food shouldn't be all that difficult. Eggs, chicken, canned tuna, lean beef, milk - all good sources of natural protein.

Milk gets a bad reputation, but I've always found it a great way to get some good quality calories, and it's cheap as well. Not sure what your budget is like, but I like to take it in to consideration. I'm not sure what your ethnicity is, but I've heard of some black guys having a rough time drinking a lot of milk. (Gas and farts mostly, nothing serious.)

Avoid vegetable protein - soy is one of the worst foods you can put into your body as a man. Lowers testosterone. The "soy food as health food" is one of the biggest myths around right now. Soy does have it's uses if you're lactose intolerant, but that's about it.

I am confused about why you'd want to move away from protein powders. Whey protein is perfectly natural - it's a by product of making cheese that has no other use (curds and whey). I don't think your main protein source should be whey powder, but it's a valuable addition to your diet. If you're concerned about quality, I've always found "Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey" to be a great product.

Does that answer your question?

None taken. I don't have any formal qualifications. I've been lifting for four different sports over the last eight years (rowing, sprinting, American football and rugby) - at my peak I was 210lbs, about 10% bodyfat.

Obviously, any advice I give should be taken with a pinch of salt - but I would say that about anything you read on the internet! All my advice has worked for me and that's my basis. I've also spent a lot of time reading and learning as much as I can around what I was using on myself.

If I don't know the answer to a question, I'll always say so.

1. I swear by the ExRx database.

2. Steroids are not something I have any knowledge of. I would recommend heading and starting with a google search for "steroid forums" and going from there.

3. I'm behind a painfully slow VPN in China, so I can't see that video but bodyweight exercise only routines are plentiful. Google "prison workout" or "plance pushups" and go from there.

In my experience however, they are one of the fads that comes in and out of fashion every few years among lifters. I've always found them to be ineffective compared to classic barbell and dumbell exercises (squat, bench, dead etc.). They are good if you don't have access to a proper gym, but I have never met anyone who had a really good physique who only did bodyweight exercises. The lack of progressive loading makes them ineffective.

How do you get an 8-pack?

To put in my $0.02 on what I said before, after doing some research it seems there are only a few major body weight exercises, but almost infinite variations on them.

Pull ups, push ups, squats, and planks

Just moving your hands and arms and body position seems to create completely new and completely unique workouts that use different muscles.

Alot of advanced bodyweight exercises seem to incorporate plyometrics as well, doing a simple action (push-up or pull-up) but with such explosive force and speed that it lifts you up off the ground, and then repeating as quickly as possible till you're done.

Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. Work out your resting metabolic weight, calculate your macros, eat 500 cals less each day than your RMR and gradually fat will melt away leaving you with abs. No short cuts.

When I get back from China I'm going to start a paleo diet, which is supposed to be good for body composition, I'll post something up here if anyone is interested.

All that's true, but it's still difficult to get a good progressive loading parameter. And plyometrics are very difficult to be "properly". You'll get benefit doing them without proper research, but, like the o-lifts, more research is required than you might think.

Seriously bodybuilding is an expensive hobby, food costs money, and you need food to get big. Do they have a Sam's Club or similar in Canada? Might be worth looking into something like that.

What do you mean by "whey not working" for you?

ALL WHEY makes me feel lethargic and off. I've tried practically all brands and types and I can go out on a limb and say that whey just doesn't work for me.

I opt for the natural route. If I lived in America, I'd be able to buy meat dirt cheap, every time I visit I gasp at the cheap prices (it's like they are throwing that shyt away) and since I cook ALL my meals, it is quite economical for a big eater such as myself.

That really doesn't seem possible. I'm not doubting you, but it is very odd. I've never heard of any lifters feeling tired after whey protein. Carbs - sure. But whey?

Have you considered seeing if you have an allergy?

I do have an allergy. Got tested about a decade ago. That's why I am looking for the natural route.

have you tried any of the veggie/vegan proteins, they're non dairy and pricing wise they're relatively cheap as a way to get your protein intake up. I don't use them myself but it could be an alternative. I'm also not a fan of the soy route but theres rice protein, pea protein, hemp protein. I'm in Canada too so I know how the meats add up but in terms of quality of protein source you're not gonna beat them, costcos your friend but in between you can supplement with the veggie protein powders to cut down costs. You can look at lean beef aminos as well, they're not cheap but effective, and won't cause you any of the whey issues. Also I know you've said you've tried every protein under the moon, but how does it make you feel terrible, with most and i'd say 99% of retail powders you're not getting a clean product, label can call itself an isolate and be only a small percentage isolate and majority concentrate which leaves people bloated gassy and worse. Might be worth experimenting with a very good islolate and seeing if that changes anything for you, it might not but when you can buy a pound as a sample for 10 bucks it's worth the experiment, who knows it could change it around. Just some options anyway.

Variety of factors, water weight, timing you weighed yourself, the timing of when you ate last and what you ate... scales are never optimal tools for weight loss, better to trust what you see and how things fit, your body will tell you if it's losing. A couple girls asked me to help them train and I gave them a routine after 2 months their physiques were night and day, but their weight had gone up and they were pissed that I had them on a diet and they were gaining weight. They went from no muscle tone to having some, that's heavier, it's going to show on a scale but they loved how they looked so they stuck to it. So don't gauge results on a scale not that you were just saying. IF you're going to use a scale use it at the same time daily in a fasted state, you wake up every morning take your morning piss, get on the scale before you put anything else in.

Most grocery stores now sell chicken in big bags frozen. Get one big bag, thaw it all out, and then park them in a low acid marinade. You want some acid to help keep the chicken for duration, but to much will start to eat the meat to shit.

Just pull out 3-5 breasts per day, grill, sear, bake, whatever each one.

I'm about to start a very rigorous eating regiment thats basically going to revolve around eating like this 7 days a week. Wont be fun, but will be effective.

I'm going to do a write up on ways to take natural diet foods that are CHEAP (keyword) and make them palatable.

PM me if you like and I can throw you some good marinades and spice rubs that'll produce some bomb ass chicken and wont make your tongue bored.

Remember I live in Canada and they rape people on prices (taxing muthafcukas for a plastic grocery bag..six cents!!)

If I lived in America, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Last time I was in Miami, I bought a shitload of chicken breasts from Winn Dixie for 4 bucks???)

Every time I go to America, I eat like a king for the price of a pauper.
