Why do you live where you live?
06-24-2015, 09:51 AM
Am I happy? No. Born and raised in Chicago. In fact, while I love sone things about the city I hate it as it's still the U.S. Dating options here suck horrendously. Especially as a black man. City is nowhere near as liberal as media would have you to believe.
I honestly just want to be a nomad and travel the world for an indefinite amount of time. See places, meet new people, observe different cultures.
What's holding me back? First off, I have a LOT of work to do getting my body right. Second, I'm working on building my finances up, credit included for obvious reasons. Have to juggle full time job with random hours/days, along with other responsibilities while working my business model. I'm busting my ass to get my shit together and realize my dreams.

Good thread.
My question is are you happy where you live?
Yes and No. I'll break this down.
The Yes part: Houston is a good city with plenty of job opportunities and a reasonable cost of living. It is small-business friendly, has lots of dining options, and really has something for everyone. People are generally friendlier than the US coastal cities like DC or SF.
The No part: Houston is one big sprawling city. Although they slowed expanding the suburbia and started building up inside the loop, traffic is only going to get worse and it's very bad already. Public transportation, aside from a decent commuter bus system, is a global embarrassment. There are more fat people per capita with all the dining options combined with unhealthy car culture.
The women, while friendly upon approach, are not that easy to pull unless you truly have your shit together, have a cowboy-ish streak, and have a set of cojones made of steel. While the women and gaming environment here are light years better than Washington DC, it's still an uphill battle for me.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
Yes. I find that after about 5-7 years in one place, I get bored of it and want to move again.
What is stopping you from moving?
My job. I have yet to replace my income to be able to take the handcuffs off and roam about freely. Working on it.

My question is are you happy where you live?
Overall..no, I don't think so.Although I currently don't feel so bad because I've been living in this dump my whole life so I really got used to it, it's just how life is for me, and also I managed to secure a lot of relationships with people that make me happier than I would be if I were alone. I live in Bucharest, Romania.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
Yes, I would like to live in a country where gaming is easier and there's more economic opportunities. Romania would be cool if you somehow both spoke the language *and* would work as a freelancer/remote/online business owner.
What is stopping you from moving?
I don't have enough money and it will take a while until my career will allow me to find work in another country.

Toronto Suburbs. No, it's unbelievably boring and dull.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
Yes and I will.
What is stopping you from moving?
Saving money + gaining experience in my career that will open up opportunities outside of the West.

California.
Super happy with it, it's the best place in the world to live. A tad expensive, but otherwise zero complaints

Moscow & London
- Very happy, quality of life is better in Moscow and it is very easy to make money and contacts, a lot more freedom here as well for expats. The whole feeling of being on the boundaries between East and West is exciting too. Overall its very easy to carve your own niche here, however some people really don't like this place. Understandably its not always convenient, when you are used to living in the States or Canada, U.K. Needless to say the city has a lot of beautiful women, and even though its a big city, the traditional mindset here is still evident.
- London, I don't enjoy London that much. Its very expensive, over saturated and its not the same city I was used to, when growing up. Probably for the best though, as a lot of areas are now 'up and coming'. However London has some very interesting jobs that are enysnc with my background, so it makes a good location. Plus I can't go without football, pubs and being in a place that you know s well. I would advise that those who are just starting out, especially young men, should head eastwards or somewhere else aside from London. It's very expensive and a crushing place if you don't have a large sum of money or some sort of niche occupation. You will probably end up in London eventually, as the highest paid, ranking jobs are usually based there.

I live close to work, it means i only have to drive 5 minutes each way each day.
My time is valuable.
Why: So i can make more bank and not be subjected to the stress traffic creates in our lives.
Do I want to move, fuck yes but i want to move from this country over to SEA for good so I need to make major bank before I go. Please see point one and three.

My question is are you happy where you live?
I feel neither passion nor dispassion. It's comfortable, within reasonable travelling distance from necessary amenities like banks and stores etc. and there's a commuting hub about half an hour away so it's pretty convenient.
But it's not a place I feel strongly inclined to defend were it criticized. It's just what it is - where I live.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
I need to travel more before deciding on that. My first idea would be somewhere outside of Europe, that's for sure. I hear good things about Costa Rica and its next on the list plus I speak the language.
What is stopping you from moving?
Financial security. I've no marketable skills nor unique training nor do I have an idea that could catapult me to successful business. For all intents and purposes I'm a glorified monkey in the workplace. As a result I can't find work that would pay enough to offer me the opportunity to relocate.
The ideal solution would then be acquire those skills and proceed but the problem as I see it is that that gives me no discernible advantage over everyone else doing the same thing.

My question is are you happy where you live?
Sort of. I'm okay with the city but not the home where I'm particularly at. It's cheap, it has plenty of bitches, and plenty of jobs. It could have more outdoor stuff to do like Austin.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
Somewhat, I've wanted to live in the Westcoast or Austin but I want to fast-track my career first. That way when I move I'll be in a high-paying position instead of surviving on an entry level gig in Cali.
What is stopping you from moving?
Family. They're the reason I'm here and not in Austin. I help look out after my younger siblings to make sure they're being well taken care of and pitch in for their expenses.

My question is are you happy where you live?
Not at all. I live in Seattle and i find the place draining my soul by the day. I go weeks without seeing sunlight. People are mopers, staring straight down, never making eye contact for fear of stranger danger. Everyone is depressed. It's weird- you can look at someone waiting for the bus. And they won't move for 10 minutes, not even slightly. I thought that was odd, but now that I've lived here several years, I'm like that too. I've become a zombie.
The people are inbred in appearance and mannerisms. Polite, but not friendly. They so despise conversation that if you strike one up with them, they will purposely say things that are not true like "Isn't it warm?" when it's cold outside or conversely "Isn't it getting cold" when it's sunny and warm outside. I am a decent conversationalist but they will run the conversation into the ground every time. I've never been at a loss for words as here because people say stuff that makes no sense.
My health has gotten considerably worse; apparently that happens to a lot of people who move to the Seattle, and no one is sure why. The micro-climate walled in by the cascade mountains that traps the wet air, likely keeps other stuff in too like pollutants. The women fall into three types: (a) plump, (b) manly, or © Pat.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
YES. San Francisco. Rio. Maybe Costa Rica. I've lived a few other places and everywhere was head and shoulders above this place.
What is stopping you from moving?
I have a business venture that requires me to be in the area, and I want to see it through. I've gotten delayed in execution a few times (goddamit), and it's stretched things out. Give me 3 years, and I will split from Grayville so fast and never look back.

My question is are you happy where you live?
It wasn't my first choice when I came out here twenty years ago, but there are worse places. Crime is almost non-existent, although there is housing project across the borough line. The locals tend to be on the white trash level, which can get to me. And we keep getting Team Blue types moving up from Philly, unhappy with the mess they created down there and now want to duplicate up here.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
If I could afford to I would move to the Poconos and spend my summers eyeing hot little college girls.
What is stopping you from moving?
Money. I have too much tied up in my house to move. When the area improves-and it will happen- I will sell my place and use the money to GTFO.

My question is are you happy where you live?
I am decently happy/content, since my happiness is derived within. The environment in Poland is more fun in terms of women than the West where I lived for most of my life.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
Soon. I want to finish some ventures and then start moving around the world. My plan is to constantly move every 6 months until I tire of it. Maybe I will never tire of it.
What is stopping you from moving?
Project. Timing. Want to have a bit more money for that.

My question is are you happy where you live?
No. (I live in DC)
Would you like to live somewhere else?
Yes. I am working on a location independent business. I wanted to move to NYC because, although I only spent a few days there, I was amazed by it. I am somewhat skeptical because it seems to have some (many?) of the qualities my current city that I do not like: high cost of living, transient people, alienating. And it is also cold. If my location independent business takes off, I would move to Japan, Spain, or Brazil because I would like to improve my Japanese, Spanish, and Portuguese respectively.
What is stopping you from moving?
Routine and social ties with some people. Once you have a steady routine for long enough, it is hard to change it. In fact, you'll create excuses not to change it. I don't have many close relationships with people in this city but there are 2-3 people that I really like and I will miss them if I leave. I was going to say money, but if I really wanted to, I could just drop what I am doing here and just go.

Seems like most of us are not happy about where we live.
I'd rather not be happy about where I live than be completely unaware there is better out there in the world.
Most people here commit entirely to their home without regard or awareness that they could live some place else. I understand it's tough, especially since most of what you've known is around you, and it would be tough to leave it all behind, but the world is way too vast a place to spend 98% of your life in just one small dot within the whole picture.

Overall, I'm happy....but after spending 23 years in one place, I would like to see other places.
There's more to live than being stuck in one place.

I live in Cali, Colombia. I live here not only because weather`s great (no seasons, sun and fresh air all around) and the city is small and confortable, but because business here is really good, real state cheap and a more mellow and calm lifestyle compared to the states. People are really friendly and the cultural background fit international profiles. the currency is below the USD so your money is worth a lot more here, thus giving you a better experience for a lot less. Latin america in general is quite a good part of the world to live in. Insecurity is a big issue, but is not a reason to stop you.
Hope it helps

Money can only insulate one from this to a certain degree.
I live here because my business is based here, which is because I'm originally from not far away. My family and the gf's family are close by.
I want to live in the countryside, in a chocolate box village; real England, the England I remember growing up in.
What stops me is purely the fact that I can't yet afford the kind of house I want. When I can, I'm gone. My children will not be brought up in this dump.
Can I ask where you are? I'm in a hell hole called Thetford (in Norfolk), and there's nothing here in terms of women, etc.
I'm thinking of moving to a city, say Norwich, as I can hopefully take advantage of the numbers, and hopefully extra opportunities.
In an ideal situation, I'd probably go to Asia, or possibly Russia.

Are you happy where you live?
VERY much so. I've lived in urban Los Angeles, for the past 59 years. My goal has always been to retire to the country - and my primary home is in a town of 900 in North County San Diego. I live in a gated country club, so I can travel and stay in LA during the week without having to worry about someone making off with the 200K+ worth of musical, recording and photography equipment. Surfable waves are 30 minutes away, ski resorts 90 minutes away, and it's the PERFECT weather for growing cannabis trees. When I retire full-time, I probably won't venture far from that crib except to travel.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
The drought is slightly crimping my style - but looks at though El Nino might be coming to save the day! There are other places where I'd like a SECOND home - Maui, Amsterdam, the Highlands of Scotland - but I'm a Southern Californian through & through!
What is stopping you from moving?
Don't want to - I've found my paradise!

My question is are you happy where you live?
Yes, absolutely. I was very careful about selecting Beijing. I didn't just end up here. I like Hong Kong far more, but Beijing is a better intersection between earning potential, urban fun, options with women, location and weather.
So, yes, I'm absolutely happy here. If I wasn't, I would leave. Not instantly, but I'd make plans and probably be somewhere else in a year's time.
Would you like to live somewhere else?
Maybe in five years. Beijing is good for me now, because my income is derived from teaching ESL, something I'm very good at maximizing income from. But I'm using that money to invest into businesses that are less location dependent, so the equation between earning potential and Beijing may change in a few years to a point where I'd be able to have more fun else where.
I'm going to use the next five years to build a couple businesses, bank cash and check out other cities in Asia, so in five years I'll be prepared to make a decision. I may end up just staying in Beijing if I am still happy here, although a 30/70 split between two locations is the most appealing.
What is stopping you from moving?
Nothing. There are virtually dozens of cities here in Asia where I could earn good money. I just really like Beijing.
I'm the King of Beijing!
