Need help with remote access software

I figure I would fine at least a few experienced lifestyle hackers here to help me out with this problem.

What is the best remote access software available out there right now? I want to be able to access my work PC from other machines.

Also, how secure is this software? I figure I'd have trouble convincing my bosses to let me use it if its unsafe.

any help in this area would be greatly appreciated

I've heard good things about LogMeIn ( https://secure.logmein.com ) - they have big enterprise customers ( https://secure.logmein.com/about/ourcustomers.aspx ) so I imagine it will be secure enough for your bosses.

I use TeamViewer. It is free from teamviewer.com and it is pretty easy to setup and use. The only downside is that if your bandwidth is limited or internet connection is slow it can sometimes be a pain in the ass to get things done.

VNC/tightvnc works well and is free and cross-platform.

I found the security papers for logmein and scanning through them now. I'll pick out the awesome bullet points from it and hopefully my boss will change his mind on it. that client list is huge, and I figure, if it gets compromised, they will more likely go for HSBC than our tiny company.

The problem with VNC would be establishing a secure connection. There is a way to tunnel tightvnc through SSH, but my work computer does not have an external ip address. Oh well, where there's a problem there is a solution[Image: smile.gif]

Need help with remote access software

just had a talk with my boss and I am now testing remote stuff in the next week. I am fucking extatic

I was dead set on meeting potentially any objections to remote access
Here's what i did:

1. Come up with a "we need remote access" sob story. I had 2. Those are especially easy when you do anything technology related because 95% of the office is computer retarded and your bosses can relate. "I'm just tired when my weekend is ruined by an "emergency", I take my 45 minute long commute to work, fix the problem in 2 minutes (and I am not exaggerating), and then take another 45 minute commute back, that's not a way to spend the weekend." My other story - "I get out of the train and I have a frantic voicemail - "NOTHING IS WORKING WHERE ARE YOU!". When i get to the office I discover the problem - someone accidentally deleted a shortcut from their desktop and is dumbfounded. "

2. Offer alternatives. Thanks to everyone that has offered suggestions above btw. I presented my boss with 3 options - logmein (the simplest to set up option), realVNC (the best developed option with integrated security features and no "central" location that it connects to (unlike logmein), full support), and the tightVNC SSH tunnel option (free but a PAIN in the ass to set up).

Now that your superiors know that you have put time and dedication into this issue, they will either agree to one thing, or offer up their own solution, like my boss did, all while you share stories on how your coworkers are babies that need you to hold their hand. Brilliant.

Fuck, I am ecstatic.

I know the feeling. Most of the other people I work with are basically computer illiterate. I've had to train people how to use web based outlook email and THAT was a challenge. I had one guy who didn't even know how to use a mouse or keyboard.

Believe me, I feel your pain.

Logmein has the best iOS app, go2mypc has the smoothest algorithms for desktop use -- I'll even do remote design work in photoshop if the connection is fast.
