Domain Names Valuation

Greetings gents,

Over the years, I've gathered quite a small collection of domain names, some useless, some good with a couple potentially being premium ones. I'd like to know how I could find out the value of these domains? Is there such a site/service out there?

I realize I could easily do a Google search, but I'm more interested in recommendations from guys who have already done that and are familiar with the process of evaluating and eventually selling a premium domain.

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

Cheers!

There's some people who make good money flipping domains, I've never gotten really into it but tried my hand a few times and havn't really had any luck. I was trying on flippa. You may want to check out Kinghumans youtube channel, he has a number of videos on this subject.

This is still a thing? If you register someone's name or a trademark with the intention of selling it later on they can file a dispute with ICANN and get the domain taken from you.

Real estate would be easier.

all true. Im a rank amateur, but I go through buying binges on domains for emerging trends. 7-8 years ago I bought a bunch of Paleo domains. About 5 years ago, I bought a bunch of drone domains. I usually do it when I see an opportunity, and usually its just things I am really into at the time, when they are still somewhat small trends. I get offers frequently, but nothing crazy. The most I have been offered so far is $10K for one. If you put some real science and a small amount of money behind it, you could make decent money. Domain squatting is all but impossible these days, and a little stupid.

Thanks guys.
Yeah I'm not talking about domains squatting. I am talking about have domains about easy to say 2-3 word keywords, even a one word domains.

This may have been discussed on here before but here's an interesting article about this very thing...

If your purposely going after other peoples names in an attempt to basically extort money out of them it's in my opinion kind of an ambulance chaser shady business mentality.

That said you can probably be in the clear and also make money going after generic terms. For example if someone saw the colorado marijuana thing comming years ago they maybe could have picked up domians like DenverPotClub.Com or COCanabis.Com or something like that. That is not infringing on anyone else's name or trademark but are names which would obviously be desirable if that happenned.

Another example would be bitcoin. Early adopters of bitcoin who felt like it could grow probably could have bought names like bitcoinexchange.com or bitcoinsforbeginners.com and probably made some money flipping them when it became more mainstream.

I'm not too hip on the rules of domian squatting but I think as long as your not taking someone elses recognized name or trademark I don't think anyone can take it from you. One other thing, I believe if you are doing something with the domain you have a stronger case for keeping it. Simply parking it probably isn't good as at least throwing up some type of informational blog or authority site to at least make it look like you are making use of the name.

Has anyone ever considered having a few nice .com domains as a long term investment portfolio? Something 1-2 words, relatively easy to liquidate, no trademarks.

It's probably a high risk speculation, but as a 10, 20 year investment? One would think a good .COM will only rise in value?

interesting, but considering the size of your portfolio, there are renewal fee's that can add up. Godaddy has a good program which encourages bulk buying and holding, which I am in now and cut my renewals by 50%, for a one time $100 fee.

Anyone want a fuck ton of Tinder related domains? Squeeze page dreams dashed.

Siteprice gave me a $5k value for my four-letter english domain name. Didn't realize I've owned it for 14 years.

GoDaddy has that kind of program with holding onto domains? I need to get on that.

When I normally hold onto domains, I do it for one specific purpose: if it has good traffic already, I try to connect it to affiliate programs that'll give me a good ROI while I wait for someone to come with a good offer. That way, you're still making some solid cash while waiting. Recently sold mangastart.com for $350, but that was purely luck.

Granted, I haven't really looked into valuation of domains since that's not my main focus. Could look into Sedo's platform and see what people are willing to buy domains for, along with checking out NameJet and Snapnames.

3 and 4 letter/character domains have been my bread and butter lately. In the last 12 months I've sold 4 or 5 .com domains for $5,000 most of which were 3 or 4 characters. I bought them a few years ago (2003 to 2009) for regfee ($8) and just held them because I knew short domains would continue to grow in value. Fortunately Chinese buyers have been on a spending spree and I benefited from that.

The latest thing I did was register some of the last 3 letter .co domains that were available. I paid about $8 for them 8 months ago and I'm now getting offers of $250/each. Unfortunately I only registered 8 of them.

Trying to pick out proper names to resell to someone who wants their own personal website/blog/brand can also be a niche market.

Take for instance myself. I spent $900 for my own domain based upon my first name and last name together. That's right, I paid a domain broker $900 for firstnamelastname.com Why did I spend so much? Because I have a fairly common first name, and my last name is also fairly common. That being said, I'm in the process of building an online brand based upon my real identity. I need to have my own domain which matches me, the brand. This could be a niche market for the "sit and wait" crowd of domain flippers. An option might be to research the most common variants of first and last names, try the combinations in a multiple-input search generator, and start registering the ones that aren't already taken.
