What is Genius, is it something you can reach through hard work?

The word genius like love gets thrown around all too easily. I have read people who call Mystery aka Erik von Markovik a genius. Yeah, his concepts seemed original, but is he a genius? And Lionel Messi?

Don't debate me.

I was checking out on Jayman's blog and he had a graphic that outlined a theoretical structure of intelligence. Even though there are multiple forms of intelligence, they rest upon something called "g". An underlying general intelligence that serves as a foundation that all the sub-intelligences are built upon.

I think one component of intelligence often overlooked is speed; your brain's processing power. One thing that separates geniuses from the crowd is their ability to understand complex ideas rapidly. Whereas a normal person may need to study many hours to grasp calculus or theoretical physics, a genius may breeze right through it. Very smart people tend to just "get it" quicker than everyone.

I'm glad more people are checking out Jayman. Whenever he posts something, he's very meticulous in citing his sources and providing evidence.

Not in and of itself, though it is almost always one of several requirements. In my view the three most important of these are:
1) Very high IQ
2) Passion/Obsession with the field, and
3) Material circumstances that allow the person to spend their time focused on the field despite a high likelihood there is no money in it.

We all know people who have one, or even sometimes two, of the above, but are in no ways geniuses. Pretty obviously a high IQ is not enough. If only. And there are plenty of average people passionate about a subject but aren't able to make any significant breakthrough's in understanding. As for material circumstances, there are loads of rich guys all over who have, or could have, complete freedom in their schedules but are in no position to add to human knowledge and understanding in the way a genius would.

Personally I think it is innate and manifests itself in a certain endeavor at a young age, but needs to be cultivated. Genius is often singular. Look at Bobby Fischer. He was a genius in chess, but nothing else.

Genius is what happens when talent also works hard.

“I have a very simple rule when it comes to management: hire the best people from your competitors, pay them more than they were earning, and give them bonuses and incentives based on their performance. That’s how you build a first-class operation.”
― Donald J. Trump

Pitting innate talent vs. hard work is dumb. Propensity for working hard is also an innate attribute to a big extent.
