What to do during an internship?

I managed to land a engineering quotations internship for 16 months.

Wondering what I could do to improve my experience and perhaps make more money on the side.

Majority of the income will be used to pay off school debt, but I plan on leaving it in the bank to accumulate interest until I HAVE to pay off the debt.

You better be a good barista. And know where all the xeroxes are.

On the serious side:
Which engineering field? Are you going to do consulting, development? Please explain a bit more.

In any cases, it is always important to network.

Aerospace engineering. Going to be taking orders from customers and giving them a price to manufacture parts.

Can you break down where you're working, how many hours, any other skills etc. so I can try and give you some specific advice.

Also if I could do one thing over again during my internship it would be to NETWORK!!! Seriously, can't understate that enough. Don't be shy about it and never pass up a chance to meet with someone who could help you out down the road.

40 hours a week, going to be using a lot of Excel, CATIA (CAD), probably going to be coding, do you want the company name? It's an aerospace wing part manufacturing place.

If you've got an internship, your #1 priority needs to be doing well at the internship. It can easily lead to a full time offer if you're interested and if not then the recommendations will be key later on.

If you're using excel I'd also recommend getting really familiar with it. The best course you can find is the one offered on Wall Street Prep.

Dude you gotta work hard, take on as much responsibility as you can, network like shit and essentially make your boss's life easier.

16 months tho, is it like a co-op?

I don't know the difference. It's paid and it counts towards one year of professional engineering.

Ask anyone and everyone for an informational interview. Not only does it help you to network, it gives you an idea of what other people are working on and where you might be able to help them.

In future interviews it allows you to be much more knowledgeable about different positions you may be applying for. The people you've interviewed will remember you, vouch for you, and can be used for references.

If you are going to impose your will on the world, you must have control over what you believe.

This. Also in whatever you think might be free time lean Ada and every other "extinct" language you might encounter. Excel proper should be given second fiddle to anything control system related. The skills necessary to program a fighter jet are endangered. If you have an internship with an aerospace company find any opportunity you can to demonstrate proficiency in the bondage and discipline languages the planes use. They will hire you and it won't be location independent, however you can leverage that scarcity to make bank.

Control Systems is pretty much my worst class, but that opportunity does sound interesting. I'm great with gas dynamics.

I'm assuming its not a paid internship? My internship I was pleasantly surprised I started off at $16 which isn't too shabby and though ideally I wanted to get hired they essentially just kept offering me 3 month contracts and giving me a raise since I didn't get stock options or medical. I think after about 3 extensions of my 3 month contracts I was up to about $22 an hour, not bad for an intern. I wanted to stay with the company as we had a bunch of VC's interested in us, some who brought match and eharmony public among other sites and businesses you've heard of. I was waiting for my mark cuban moment where everyone in the business even the janitor gets rich so I was anxious to get hired. Then 2007-2008 came and with the majority of my clients being car companies and all on the brink of going under I wound up not getting laid off but wasn't going to get hired anytime soon. Went and got a job with Orbitz basically just as a scare tactic to my employer to try to get hired and they told me good luck at orbitz so that was the end of that. I lasted 3 days at orbitz and walked out, waaaayyy to corporate for me. they are a very employee friendly company just wasn't my cup of tea.

I just saw the contract today, it's at $18/hr. I know a few ways to make them more profitable with this job, have done it at another company already. Is there usually opportunities to get a raise during internships?

Trying to figure out a way to save enough money to pay off school debt. I'm looking at stashing most of the cash into a high interest tax free savings account. Found a decent one with a .012%/month.

Is there any better way to save this money?
