South By Southwest: The Greatest Party You've Never Been To (Austin, Texas)

I'm thinking of going, and staying in my camper van. It has the comforts of home and fits in a regular parking spot. As long as I can find parking I should be golden.

It's possible I can find free places to park my motorhome (legality is 48 hours or overnight unless specifically prohibited), but I believe McKinley state park is walking distance from the action.

Also remember to talk too and everyone and have a good time. There's plenty of kickass after parties to go around. Possibly even throw one in your motorhome. There's a lot you can do while you're over there.

I would also look out for free shows. Plenty of acts don't have their shows fill up so they start letting in people free occasionally.

I looked it up:

§ 12-5-11 - RESTRICTION ON PARKING A MOTOR HOME.

A person may not park a self-propelled motor home or other motor vehicle containing a permanently installed sleeping facility or human sanitary treatment or disposal facility on a public street or alley for longer than 72 continuous hours.

Source: 1992 Code Section 16-5-20; Ord. 031204-13; Ord. 031211-11.

I don't know if yours is just a van with a bed or a Class B with possibly a toilet and kitchen, but the laws could apply differently based on the insides.

In my case because all motorhomes are self-contained (power, bed, water, toilet, kitchen, etc.) if it's a short term stay I don't even bother looking for legitimate RV parking because if you know the laws in the area you can stay for free easily. Add in one of those handicap parking permits and you're bulletproof.

Thanks for looking this up! This law is not bad at all. Mine is a class B van, but you can tell it is a real RV if you're paying attention. Class B's are small, but great for logistics.

I feel like I should mention that the first days and last days are when the locals are out in force and when you should go out and meet people to know what's going to be hot.

The out of owners come in force the middle of the week due to Spring Breakand tend to dip by Friday and Saturday.

This past week I had the opportunity to drop into Austin for two days, and after reading the following quote, I knew I had to make the trip:

1. If you're under the age of 25, you're a fool if you don't go to SXSW in 2016. Go for the music session.

Despite all the hype in this thread, however, I was disappointed. I've visited Austin a few times in the past, and was not impressed by all that SXSW had to offer. It was no better than a standard weekend in Austin.

Now - I only did two days, and I've written before that it's difficult for a small group of guys like the RVF to determine if an event/location is a fuckfest or not, but I'll detail my experience and let you decide.

Music: I bounced around a few music venues Thursday and Friday. There were lots of trashy hipster girls, and most of the attractive girls were with boyfriends. I did some number farming in between sets, but nothing crazy.

Nightgame: Night game is my bread and butter so I planned to hit the bars both nights. Thursday I lost track of time at a showcase and only got to 6th street at 1 AM. I always forget that bars close at 2 AM. I followed BlurredSevens' advice and went to 6th and Red River.

Quote:Quote:

4. It's easy to figure out where to go, because you can go anywhere and find a party. Start at 6th and Red River and follow your gut.

6th Street: aka Dirty 6th. This place is a riot, it's maybe 12 blocks of city street closed down to traffic, and is plastered with people. Felt like being in Times Square at rush hour. Bars and live music everywhere, it's hard to go wrong here. The crowd is pretty young.

As a Mardi Gras veteran, New Orleans pro, I knew what to expect. I've been to Dirty Sixth a few times and was ready to roll. However, this was completely different. The demographics broke down like this:

80% aggressive black guys, running "hey girl come here!" game
15% drunk tourist couples
5% dumb lost ugly girls

BlurredSevens was right, it was a riot. The streets were packed, the police had blocked off the middle of the street to patrol the area, it was absolutely disgusting. People pushing and shoving trying to go god knows where, stumbling all over each other like they were 18 drinking their first Schlitz. I was texting with user vacuumbed and he had the same experience all week. I number closed one girl but left after getting blown out by the few cuties that were present.

Friday I knew I had to get out earlier to get more approaches in. Last time I was in Austin I got some love on West 6th, so around 11 PM I headed out ready to pound the pavement.

The bars were busy, but the vibe and population were no different than last time I was around. If anything, it was worse because all the UT girls were on spring break. I had a few approaches go decent, nothing really biting. Around midnight I was ready to swear SXSW off, but I met a beautiful hispanic girl and banged it out until 4 AM.

In summary - I did not feel sex in the air, SXSW is cool if you want music, fuck dirty 6th. Austin is still a great city and I will return.
