Oh, How the Mighty Have Fallen

Watching the Bruce Jenner spectacle, going from Olympic God to pre op tranny in a car wreck, got me thinking about how you can never let your guard down when/if you get to the top. I think keeping yourself grounded and taking care of your mental health and avoiding drugs/alcohol is key.
I also thought of a few other spectacular falls from other former top athletes, anyone think of some more?

These men were never 'mighty', just popular. Their success was solely bases on the masses whimsical needs for entertainment. In a 100 years no one will remember their names.

I'd be willing to say Mike Tyson wouldn't be nearly as famous if it weren't for how controversial he is. Furthermore, Bruce Jenner was never really a celebrity until he obtained that secondary role with the Kardashians in their fake 'reality'-show. As for Diego Maradona, he was an excellent association football player but a lot of his fame is due to all the controversy he caused and especially the 'Hand of God' goal while facing England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Johan Cruyff for example, was an excellent association football player who scored more goals than Maradona in Europe (yes, Maradona played in Europe but he scored the most while playing for Argentinos Juniors) but he isn't nearly as famous and that is largely-due to the fact that he wasn't very controversial.

These men pushed themselves to the limits of the fields they were in. Those fields only exist to provide entertainment but just about everything we do only exists because other people value it. Let them have their accomplishments.

Jenner on the Wheaties box was iconic. The Kardashians have driven him mad. It was only time.

Wtf happened to Tyson? I thought he went vegan. Wtf. I know people that are vegan can still get fat, usually because they mix vegetables and carbs, but this is weird. He should know better...

You're right. These men can have all the accomplishments they want.

I think you are minimizing their accomplishments a bit too much, and are way off the mark.
Tyson became world champion at age 20 and won his first 19 fights by knockout. Everyone saw his fights long before he became a rapist and ear biter.
Bruce Jenner was a massive hero and international celebrity in the 1970s long before reality tv existed.
I really don't think Madonna's main claim to fame is a disputed goal and his legal problems/drug addiction. I think his fame has a lot more to do with the performance that led FIFA to name him co player of the 20th century along with Pele.

Fair enough. Admittedly, I don't know much about Bruce Jenner or Mike Tyson. Undoubtedly, Maradona was a football player of exceptional talent but at the very least his status as a controversial figure in sport played an important part in securing his fame; maybe it wasn't the main reason but it was certainly very important.

Ummm....I'm pretty sure Mike Tyson was mighty!

And that fat pic was at his low, when he was coked up and up to 360 pounds...have you seen him lately? Sober, vegan, 210 pounds of muscle. But if you still don't think he's mighty, go up to his face and call him the n-word [Image: smile.gif]
