That "Sixth Sense"

Interesting thing happened to me the other day. Can't really get over it because it reminded me of an incident from my childhood.

I was backing up out of a driveway on Tuesday night, totally dark outside. Nobody seemed to be around, so I just went into autopilot and began driving out. But for some reason, I got hit with a sick feeling in my stomach, and hit the brakes. A second later, some kid scurries away from behind my car, too close to have been able to see in my rear view mirror. Would have steamrolled him had I not stopped.

I reflected back on my life and I can think of other times where I've been bailed out of potentially life-altering experiences like this due to subconscious feelings of dread. Once when I was about seven or eight I was playing street hockey alone, shooting tennis balls against the wall of a community hall. Some guy popped up from around the side with a bag of chips and asked me to have some. I said no, knowing to never talk to strangers. He kept trying to convince me to come with him to his car because he had chocolate in it, and I should just follow him. He kept walking towards me, making piercing eye contact that I will never forget. I was overcome with that feeling of fear, that sense that something terrible might happen, despite being too young to know what his obvious intentions were. I dropped my stick and took off running towards some houses and was lucky to see some lady gardening a block away so I could call my parents. The lady called the cops, and the guy was eventually caught trying to lure another kid a few weeks later once the neighborhood had been alerted.

I don't know if this sort of thing qualifies as "extrasensory perception" or anything (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extrasens...rception), and I doubt there will ever be accurate scientific models to describe it. But the reason I made a thread for this is to ask you guys about your experiences. Have you ever been in a situation where you knew something was wrong before it happened? Met someone who just seemed to be 'off?' Post here, Ive been fascinated by this stuff ever since my incident on Tuesday...

Plenty of times I have gotten this feeling. I've sensed when people were near despite them hiding and in conditions similar to what OP described. I also have experienced when shit is about to go down and left an area before gunshots erupted. It's a useful feeling to have for survival but it is not correct all the time. Sometimes you have to use your brain and think rationally about the situation your in despite having that gut feeling. More often than not though I trust that feeling.

Your subconscious brain absorbs are huge amount of information you aren't even aware of. This is your 'gut feeling'.

That "Sixth Sense"

At times driving I have unconsciously made a lane change right before some clusterfuck was about to happen right in front of me.

Usually my sixth-sense experiences are more benign. Once in an elevator I suddenly found myself begin to whistle a tune, and then a second later someone's cell phone begins to ring and it is that tune.

I'm sure many of us have reached for our cell phones a moment before an anticipated text arrives.

I think this stuff is real- "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in our philosophies."

This sense can even be trained and developed.

The one I recall having the biggest impact on me was from about 15 years ago.

I was doing a solo motorcycle trip and the plan was to meet another friend at some point, somewhere in the middle.

This was essentially pre cell phone days, so we had a third party friend act as a messenger. I get to the pre arranged camp spot on the lake, have a swim and drink a couple beers and just enjoy the evening. By 10pm he still wasnt there and I had a bit of a party brewing in me.

So I called up a buddy in a town 60km up the lake and they are having a time so I decide to head their way. We meet at a bar downtown and there are all sorts of cute girls and everyone is having a great time, one of those nights where things are too good.

So we are taking off from the bar and heading to a big lake house for what is sure to be a legendary afterparty. I am in the back seat with by good friend in shotgun. Our other friend is driving, and has been drinking, but does not seem drunk.

Still, I tell my mate to buckle up (even 15 years ago, putting on a seat belt was not too common). He just waves me off, but for some reason or other I force him to put it on. It was like I was gearing up for a crash, even telling the driver to slow down (he was not even speeding). My gut was telling me to get the fuck out of that car.

All of a sudden there is a huge sound we are airborn in a slow barrel roll. I see a huge propane tank flash by that car barely a meter away. We land on our wheels and the whole car just flattens to the road. We spin out a bit then stop.

We stumble out of the car and sit there dazed, still not sure what happened.

It turns out that the road took a Y and we went straight. The road was about 4 meters up and we had smashed through a barrier and went airborn. Damn lucky, and if not for making my friend put on his seatbelt he would be a gonner.

As for my friend who bailed on me, he sat up on a mountain that night with a terrible feeling in his stomach. Something told him that if he would have went to town he would find trouble.

He would NEVER have put on his seatbelt. No matter who said something to him, he would straight up refuse. He mentioned this later when we spoke.

I have a few others as well, but this one has stuck with me for years due to the overwhelming feeling that I was getting.

Many people are having similar experiences.

If you talk with some soldiers or pilots who had life-threatening experiences you will find many telling those stories.

Also you can train that perception via meditation/contemplation - it just gets stronger.

How you explain it is not important - whether it is deep subconscious mental awareness using your full brain power or something like a higher Soul awareness - the current explanation does not matter.

What matters is to train that ability via exercises - contemplation/meditation is beneficial also for physical health - and to trust that gut feeling - don't discard it simply by mental hamsterizations.

Many soldiers saved lives by trusting that gut feeling and not driving down one alley or being careful when approaching someone. There is more to it obviously than we currently know in our level of science - maybe in the future there will be a better scientific explanation - I for one try to use intuition (beyond emotions) actively.

Practice your intuition and it gets stronger. I take this seriously. Before I open the door I ask myself, Where is the cat right now? I'm almost always right. Before I answer the phone, I ask myself who is calling. Seldom miss it. Will she or won't she tonight? I'm not perfect at this but getting better.

Once when I was much younger I had a very weird experience.

We were all in the car about to set off on a 1 day family trip. Because we would be getting back late, my mum had already cooked the dinner (which I can still remember, spaghetti bolognese).

Those of you who are familiar with cooking will know that a bolognese sauce needs to simmer. Just before we left, my mum asked my grandad to turn off the hob and just let the sauce sit. My grandad having been raised in the 1930s probably had only touched an oven around 5 times before. Instead of turning it off, he actually turned up the heat.

I was waiting in the car whilst that exchange happened, and soon everyone got in. But I could just sense something wasn't right. I panicked and told my mum that something was wrong, she went inside and after about 2 minutes heard the gas oven cooking. It was at a high enough heat to boil away all the sauce and start a fire.

I'm surprised she believed me.

That feeling in your gut is real. You have more neurons in your gut than a cat has in its brain.

Your vagus nerve helps control your heart and digestive tract, including parasympathetic control (opposite of fight or flight).

So in a potentially dangerous situation, while you might notice your sympathetic processes kick in (blood pressure increase, skeletal muscle blood flow), the decrease in the parasympathetic 'system' is sometimes more obvious in your gut because it's so centrally located.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
