A Pack of Condoms Now Costs 5 in Venezuela

Venezuelans who already must line up for hours to buy chicken, sugar, medicines and other basic products in short supply now face a new indignity: Condoms are hard to find and nearly impossible to afford.

“The country is so messed up that now we have to wait in line even to have sex,” lamented Jonatan Montilla, a 31-year-old advertising company art director. “This is a new low.”

A collapse in oil prices has deepened shortages of consumer products from diapers to deodorant in the OPEC country that imports most of what it consumes, with crude exports accounting for about 95 percent of its foreign currency earnings. As the price the country receives for its oil exports fell 60 percent in the past seven months, the economy is being pushed to the brink with a three-in-four chance of default in the next 12 months if oil prices don’t recover.

The impact of reduced access to contraceptives is far graver than frustration over failed hookups. Venezuela has one of South America’s highest rates of HIV infection and teenage pregnancy. Abortion is illegal. [...]

It appears Israel and the United States are trying to spread STDs in Venezuela.

Very misleading headline. No one is actually paying 755 US dollars for a pack of condoms. The official exchange rate is a fantasy. The actual price is 25 dollars for a 36 count box of condoms. They make it sound like people are paying almost 800 bucks for 3 condoms, FAIL.

On the auction website MercadoLibre, used by Venezuelans to obtain scarce goods, a 36-pack of Trojans sells for 4,760 bolivars ($755 at the official exchange rate), close to the country’s minimum monthly wage of 5,600 bolivars. At the unofficial black-market rate used by people with access to dollars, the cost is about $25, compared to $21 in the U.S.

Good point. I didn't do further research on that, so I admit it's misleading to speak of $755. Still even $25 is fucking expensive for the average Venezuelan in these days and I imagine the effect on spreading STDs and pregnancies remains significant.

Right, just like they did in Africa with AIDS to distract from their involvement with the chemtrails.

The best way to profit from it is to smuggle subsidized Venezuelan fuel and food into Colombia and then resell it at market prices. However, the Venezuelan military currently has a monopoly on this lucrative business and if you started doing anything on a large scale, you could get killed.
I've thought about how one could invest in Venezuela. It could be really lucrative to buy property there with dollars, hold it for 5-10 years, and then sell once the country has recovered. However, this is a huge crapshoot, since they have zero respect for foreign investments or property rights and would just confiscate your shit if they felt like it. I think the only way around this would be to marry a daughter of a mid to high ranking government official. Once you are part of their mafia, they would be less likely to fuck with you.
So, right now, the best business opportunity would probably be servicing Venezuelans who want to get the fuck out of Venezuela. They all want to go to Miami and buy property.

That country is going to implode before people give a shit about sex. Social unrest and violence along with the head-in-sand attitude of the government isn't making things better.

One more question on the unofficial exchange rates: When you say that in reality get more Pesos for their dollars, how many people do actually have this access to USD? Do many people get paid in $? How many Venezuelans have relatives abroad for remittances? Thanks in advance.

Not that many have access to dollars. Most Venezuelans are fucked and get paid in Bolivares. There are actually 3 different tiers of exchange rates for the Bolivar in addition to the black market rate.

The dollars come into Venezuela by a number of means. Remittances don't work because the government will force you to change the dollars at the official rate, which means they essentially rob 95% of anything sent officially.
So, dollars come in unofficially/physically.
One way is the drug trade (bulk shipments of dollars sent by a number of means), another is the postal service, another is whatever is physically bought in by individual tourists and travelers. Last time I was in Venezuela I was asked by a uniformed police officer in the damn airport if I wanted to change any dollars I bought with me (at a black market rate). I declined, as I knew what the full black market rate was, and I also didn't want to admit to anyone not known to me personally that I had a substantial amount of hard currency on my person.

Miami? Hell, I meet Venezuelans here in Boston all the time with thick accents. I ask them, "Hugo toss you out?" and they always laugh. I'm not complaining too much though, some of the girl refugees coming over are fine as hell.

Ya that's cool, but Doral, a Miami suburb, is nicknamed Doralzuela because of how many Venezuelans live there. In fact, there aren't any more Venezuelans in any part of the U.S. than there are in Doral, so I knew what I was doing when I posted that picture.

Their women being fine as fuck is not a secret. Their 6s are most people's 8s.

Weston, which is in Broward County, a little further north of Doral, is nicknamed Westonzuela. There are obviously more Venezuelans in Doral than in Weston, though.

Edit: Actually, Weston may have a few more. It's pretty close.

Fascinating country to be honest. Some of the hottest woman on the planet, huge value for your dollars, great nature, huge potential. Only the danger holds people back but then again isnt that what can make a man? Someone who dares to go where others do not. It feels almost like a calling.

Merenguero is right, Weston is in 2nd place, but for those who are unfamiliar with these places, both of them are affluent suburbs.

Venezuelans have money, they don't come here and live in affordable housing complexes.

Doral and Weston were #1 and #2 in number of Venezuelans according to 2000 census data, but that was obviously a while ago. Not sure what the more recent results would be.
