I'm contemplating getting an Amazon Kindle.

the only problem I've had with my Kindles, is the amount of money I spend in the Kindle store. And feeling like I dont use it enough(25 books in 2014, my most read year).

I got a Kindle Fire HDX last year and it was a great investment. I love my Kindle. The Fire HDX is great as a reader plus you can use all the apps you would find on a iPhone/Android. I was skeptical about ebooks but since I bought my Kindle, I now prefer ebooks over physical books. I can highlight passages. I can select a word I don't know and a Dictionary.com bubble pops up and defines the word. It is great. I highly recommend it.

I'm not sure which one to get.

Paperwhite or Voyage

Which one is better?

There isn't much difference except for the screen. The Voyage has better contrast and a higher resolution (sharper text).

If you're sure you will use it a lot and will keep it for a few years, probably best to get the Voyage. On the other hand, if you're not sure that you'll like it and just want to try out a basic model, the Paperwhite is still a very good reader.

I just got one about a week ago. I've never had an eReader, but I wanted one for multiple reasons - mainly to get back into reading, because I really do enjoy it and it's better than video games.

I went with the cheapest, newest one - It's $79. I haven't used it much so far, but so far it's everything I need in an eReader.

I'd recommend getting a case too. Just $10-15 on Amazon for one.

Also the nice thing about Amazon Kindle is that the Amazon library has tons of free ebooks from great authors: Mencken, Nietzche, Marcus Aurelius & Henry David Thoreau. Also, Amazon Prime members get discounts on some of the books (I think).

What is the case with the 3G version, can you still browse all external homepages for free using kindle? Are there any data limitations and if so can you buy extra data?

I bought a Kindle and it has changed my life. I now read all the time. I highly recommend the cheapest model, you can pick it up for close to $50 when it goes on sale. The amount of reading you will do will exponentially increase.

Some of the amazon prime books that are "free" are whatever, I've tried reading them (and they typically suck).

Also, how does the kindle work with technical or books with charts?

I'll read some "lean" and programming books on it and wonder how it will look.

Either way, I just ordered the voyage so I'll give a report in a couple of days.

To 3G or not to 3G, that is the question.

Is it worth paying extra for it?

I got the 4G Kindle Fire and it is worth it. It was like $10-15 more on my Verizon plan but worth it. I can access internet anywhere plus I can use it to tether other devices.

The kindle fire is more like an android tablet. I doubt that the black and white kindles have the same internet connectivities.

Every book I've had on the Kindle Paperwhite that's had charts, has appeared really fucked up on the screen. It's my only major gripe with the product.

I put this post in two places (apologies) but just trying to help guys save money if they were thinking of prime.

AMAZON PRIME WILL BE $72/YR on Saturday Jan 24, 2015. One day only. New members only. http://www.cnet.com/how-to/amazons-one-d...embership/

Quote:Quote:

To celebrate its two recent Golden Globe wins, Amazon tomorrow (Saturday, January 24) is making its original series "Transparent" free for everyone and offering Prime memberships to new users for $72.

Amazon's "Transparent" picked up two Golden Globe awards earlier this month. The show itself won for Best Musical or Comedy Series, and Jeffrey Tambor won for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series. "Transparent" is offered exclusively to Amazon Prime members, but on Saturday Amazon is making all 10 episodes available for free for Prime members and nonmembers alike. According to Amazon, all Amazon customers can watch "Transparent" on their TVs using the Amazon Instant Video app on Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Xbox, PlayStation, Wii and smart TVs. You can also use the Amazon Instant Video app to watch on mobile devices, including Fire tablets, Fire phone, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android phones, as well as hundreds of other connected devices. You can stream the show online at Amazon.com/Transparent.

In addition, Amazon on Saturday is offering a one-day sale on Prime memberships, discounting the $99 annual fee to $72 to mark its wins at the 72nd Annual Golden Globes Awards. According to Amazon, you will be able to find the offer here on Saturday.

Just came back from Bestbuy. I held my Nexus 4 with the Kindle app next to all three Kindles and they all looked the same. I have the app set to the lowest brightness setting with a beige background. I was ready to drop the $79 and walk out a happy man but seeing how similar it looked it changed my mind.

Fuck, I went to look for a Kindle Voyage at Best Buy and Staples but they don't have any in stock. Other stores don't sell them, only regular kindles and paperwhites.

Amazon won't have a new batch of Kindle Voyages until Feb 1st. [Image: sad.gif]

I am definitely going to buy a Kindle Paperwhite after reading all this, was already thinking about it. It's a 100 euros over here, not too bad. How about downloading free books? I see there are quite a lot of free books at amazon itself or at gutenburg (especially classic books) but any of you guys have experience with other sources?

I'm contemplating getting an Amazon Kindle.

I own 6 (3 e-ink and 3 Fires)kindles going back to the 2nd generation E-Ink from 2009.
The voyage, while expensive, is hands down the greatest E-Reader ever made. If you get a chance to examine one in a store or elsewhere the thinness and weight of the device are astounding.

The Fire's I bought because I already had a significant digital archive and familiarity with Amazon's ecosystem, I actually used to work for Kindle tech support. If you are already "bought in" they are great. They work as a remote for the other Amazon devices like the FireTV and Fire Stick, which I also have. The new ones from 2014 are also, hands down, the best children's tablets on the market. Netflix and Hulu work seamlessly, as do most of the large entertainment streaming services like pandora.

That being said, if you are not already "bought in" to Amazon's system, another android brand like Samsung might be better. Google's apps are more diverse and you can customize them much more. The Fire is a "Walled Garden" of content, you can side load a lot of stuff, and I've rooted one of the fires and loaded regular android on it. If you like to tinker and modify your tech, Amazon is as bad as Apple for the restrictive nature of its devices. If you primarily use your tablet for entertainment, the Fire is great. If you really like to modify and customize your tech (power users), go standard Android. If technology confuses and frustrates you, but you are addicted to facebook and pintrest, get an ipad. The Fire is acceptable for book reading too if you use the sepia tone background. Technical manuals and charts are better on the Fire when viewed as a pdf. The ebook format is poor for anything non-text.

The E-Readers are top notch, however. As has been mentioned, there are a lot of ways to acquire free ebooks. I have over 10,000.

tldr - get a paperwhite or voyage.

Calibre is quite clunky... I would recommend using Kindle Preview. Also, if you have a lot of books and want to bulk covert them, try KindleGen

Many types of files (PDF, doc, etc.) can be emailed directly to your Kindle, but not EPUB. For that, you could use either Amazon's tools (above) or a third-party service like the following one: http://www.sendepubtokindle.com

Calibre's main selling point is its ability to strip many forms of DRM from ebooks during the conversion process, although I think that many of the new official releases have depreciated this feature, the old version I use still has it.

If you convert from the .azw format (amazon proprietary, DRM) to epub (opensource) it removes the DRM. You then have to either convert it back to .mobi (which Kindle reads natively) or sideload a EPUB 3rd party app.

The are easier ways to get DRM free books however. The same places you find your movies and music. Its a great way to save on college textbooks too, assuming the class isnt part of the access code or other modern textbook scams.

Most classes are starting to use access codes so one must buy a new book, or an access code that cost as much as the book+access code.

In other news, damn....of the 10000 I borrowed from the interwebs, most of them are cheap no-value books. Now I must delete them from calibre and keep my little stack of useful books.

The voyage is pretty good, quick to flip and has a good display. The thing is that converting PDF > Mobi sucks because the format gets messed up, but it is what it is.

Kindle books are almost the price of the real books, so if I must buy books, I'll just get the physical version.
