Coup Plot In Gambia By US "Soldiers Of Fortune" Revealed

This is something right out of the pages of Soldier of Fortune.

I love stories like this.

A small clique of US citizens of Gambian origin are accused of masterminding an alleged coup to overthrow the dictator of The Gambia (yes, it has the word "The" in front of it). One of them is a Texas businessman.

Here's the story:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30686627

Gambia has one of the worst human rights records in Africa and is run by the type of Woody Allen/Bananas type dictator right out of central casting. His name is Yahya Jammeh. Among other things, he:

*Seized power in 1994, aged 29
*Stamped out all opposition
*Claims to be able to cure HIV/Aids
*In 2011, told the BBC he would rule for "a billion years"

The actual coup plot reads like a Hollywood screenplay. Here's the actual criminal complaint. You have to see this:

https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/...laint.html

This was going to be one of those old-school style coups. But somebody flapped his lips and the game was up.

What does it take to seize power in a country, or in any conspiratorial enterprise?

1. Secrecy
2. Logistics
3. Initiative
4. Luck

I also figure that if the US is prosecuting these guys, then the current Gambian despot must be a friend of the US.

Another possibility is that US intelligence agencies realized how incompetent these guys actually were and that if they tried to overthrow this loon and failed, it'd make the US look bad so they just cut them loose.

The actual coup plot document has some funny gems. Some quotes:
Quote:Quote:

Although FAAL believed a larger group would travel to The Gambia to participate in the coup, only 10-12 ultimately entered The Gambia to carry it out (...)
- What to do when your co-conspirators flake?

Quote:Quote:

FAAL identified the leader of the group by his code name, "Dave."
- Don't know why I found this one so funny.

Quote:Quote:

They also expected to be joined by up to 160 members of the local Gambian military who supposedly agreed to participate in the coup. The group's Operations Plan was stored online where only the members of the conspiracy could view it. FAAL could only access the Operations Plan utilizing a link sent to FAAL's email account.
- Hmm, what could go wrong?

Quote:Quote:

[Alpha Team] believed the Gambian Army soldiers at the Sate House would drop their weapons and flee, being unwilling to die for President Jammeh. (...) According to their plan, Alpha team fired a shot into the air, hoping the soldiers would give up. Instead the group began taking heavy fire from the guard towers. Alpha Team attempted to breach the door of the State House. FAAL believes all of the Alpha Team members were killed.
- Slight oversight.

Quote:Quote:

On January 1, 2015, FBI agents searched FAAL's residence. During the course of the search, several items of investigative interest were found, including the following:
a. (...)
b. (...)
c. Google satellite images of The Gambia, including images of the area in the capital city, Banjul, where open-source reporting indicated the attempted coup took place. These images were found in a manila file folder. On the cover of the file folder the words "top secret" were handwritten and underlined in black ink.

In the end though, a bunch of people died attempting to make a better life for the Gambian people. The document is funny, but that takes a shit load of balls.

This guy is stupid.

Gambia has Senegal as its W, E, N , South borders. Yet he constantly attacks it, and accused it of allowing the assailants to get through Gambia.

Of course they came from Senegal, it's the only borders they have ...

Isn't it weird how many African countries have these terrible dictators right out of crappy novels, who have harems, stick heads on spikes etc., and you just never, ever hear about them. I mean if nothing else they are ripe for being made into pop culture figures. But somehow the media isn't interested in them. Why is that?

For the guys reading this with a military or history background, i'm curious as a thought experiment, what do you think it would take overthrow that ruler and hold/run the country (assuming no foreign countries or groups invade in return) ?

Little Dark has hijacked this forum. You can never find a thread without someone offering the solution as Little Dark going all Chuck Norris.

Regarding the story, the American government loves its crackpot dictators as long as they serve a useful function. What purpose does Jammeh serve?

The difficulty is not in overthrowing a leader, but rather, re-establishing centralized control once they are out of the picture.

I enjoyed watching the Tom Cruise film Valkyrie, because it gives some idea of how complicated the organization of a coup truly is.

Usually, militaries are in the best possible position to impose a coup, since they hold de facto control of a country. It's very understandable why the architects of the US system made it damn well clear that the military was not to engage in internal security.

To successful engage in a coup, you'd need a recognizable figure that the people would turn to for leadership, were the existing leadership cease to hold the reigns.

You can create pseudo military organisations that retain the control of a country even if the military does not engage in internal security.

To invade a country and hold it would be extremely difficult for an outsider, probably impossible. He'd never have enough support from the locals.

A historical example would William Walker who took and briefly held Nicaragua in the 1850s without any country supporting him. That was a different time though and he even then he had very brief success.

The Gambian military is just 2,500 active members though. If you formed a local militia and got foreigners to join in you could probably beat them fairly easy. You'd have to give surrounding countries a reason to support you though.

Another option would be to just finance a miltia to do your work for you. The coups in Guatemala and Iran in the '50s were both accomplished for under $3 million. Pretty cheap all things considered.

Apparently that's $27 million today, which is definitely affordable if you're a member of the ultra-wealthy. From there you'd have your own private country. It be a shithole, and incredibly unstable, but interesting.

A better option with that money might be to steal a patch of land from Somalia, Western Sahara, or the Congo. Use that money to bribe local tribes and build up a little city-state.

Coup Plot In Gambia By US "Soldiers Of Fortune" Revealed

This type of coup plot is certainly not uncommon especially when it comes to Africa. A few years ago, there was a high-profile case, called the Wonga Coup, involving a cabal of mercenaries and high-level businessmen including Margaret Thatcher's son, Mark, Severo Moto, a disssident from Equatorial Guinea and exiled in Spain, and a British mercernary named Simon Mann among others. Initially, they went in under the auspice of overthrowing an evil dictator in Equatorial Guinea, but it was later revealed that they stood to gain incredible riches from the newly installed puppet they were trying to put in place. The story goes as follows and reads like something straight out of a book called Dogs of War by Frederik Forrsyth(awesome film by the way headlined by Christopher Walken on Netflix), which they conceivably could have used as inspiration for such an audacious plan:

Quote:Quote:

On 7 March 2004 Zimbabwean police in Harare airport impounded a plane which flew in from South Africa.[4] The alleged plot leader, ex-Special Air Service (SAS) officer Simon Mann,[5] was arrested with two colleagues near the runway while waiting for arms to be loaded on a Boeing 727(N4610), carrying three crew and 64 former soldiers recruited in South Africa.[6] The majority of those alleged to have been the mercenaries planning to carry out the coup are based in South Africa and ex-members of the 32 Buffalo Battalion, a special force unit that fought for the South African apartheid regime.[7]

On 9 March 2004 Nick du Toit and 14 other South African and Armenian men were arrested in Equatorial Guinea on suspicion of being the mercenaries' vanguard.[5][6]

The marketing manager of Zimbabwe Defense Industries, Hope Mutize, said in court that Simon Mann had paid him a deposit on weapons worth $180,000 (£100,000) in February 2004 and indirectly linked Mr Mann to the alleged plot by saying he was accompanied by a South African, Nick du Toit, the leader of the 14 men arrested in Equatorial Guinea.[6] "They insisted they did not want any paperwork," Mr Mutize added. Legal sources said Mr Mann had cleared the deal with ZDI's managing director, Tshinga Dube. But news of the deal apparently leaked to the South African authorities, who tipped off Zimbabwean intelligence. Their arms requisition included 20 machine guns, 61 AK-47 assault rifles, 150 hand grenades, 10 rocket-propelled grenade launchers (and 100 RPG shells), and 75,000 rounds of ammunition.[8][9][10] Mr Mann, 51, said he wanted the rifles, mortars and ammunition to guard JFPI Corporation-owned diamond mines in volatile parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo.[6]

It was alleged that those arrested in Zimbabwe made a stopover in Harare city to buy weapons and expected to join a team in Equatorial Guinea to overthrow President Obiang.[11][12][13][14] Nick du Toit, the leader of the group of arrested in Equatorial Guinea, said at his trial in Equatorial Guinea that he was recruited by Simon Mann and that he was helping with recruitment, acquiring weapons and logistics. He says he was told they were trying to install an exiled opposition politician, Severo Moto, as the new president.[14]

Regarding Thatchers involvement

Quote:Quote:

Margaret Thatcher approved of a failed attempt to use an army of mercenaries to overthrow the president of Equatorial Guinea, according to the unpublished memoirs of the chief protagonist of the bid, former SAS officer Simon Mann.

The former prime minister, whose son, Sir Mark, was convicted in a South African court of involvement in the attempted 2004 coup, allegedly told Mann at a meeting at her Belgravia home: "I'm sure it's going to work".

It is claimed that Thatcher likened the need for radical change in the oil-rich Equatorial Guinea to the way London's Docklands had been redeveloped during the 1980s.

She is also alleged to have encouraged Mann to talk to a group seeking to overthrow the then president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, with the words: "We must always look after our friends, Simon … as I'm sure you know."

In an affair known as the Wonga coup, Mann and 69 mercenaries attempted to replace Equatorial Guinea's dictator Teodoro Obiang with an exiled opposition politician, Severo Moto, in March 2004. The escapade went dramatically wrong and led to Mann being convicted and imprisoned.

The mercernaries would eventually get released, but not before they languished in one of the most notorious prisons in the world for awhile, known as Black Beach prison.

There was also a coup attempt ten years ago in Equitorial Guinea in which Margaret Thatchers son Mark was a part of, as well as a motely crew of foreign mercenaries and the Spanish government. Another interesting story was the coup attempt in the Caribbean country of Dominica in the 80s, again the mercenaries were interesting characters and included a Canadian neo-Nazi and American KKK members and again, the coup attempt didnt go so well.

Depends on a variety of factors. How many of us would there be? What sort of weapons do we have and what does their military have in terms of hardware?

Securing the government buildings, communications, and control over the power grid along with utilities would be the first step. Assuming the coup was launched from within the city.

The simultaneous executions of high level government and military figures who could rally against us would be a high priority.

A well trained, armed, and properly led force could succeed in taking over the country. There were numerous other filibusters like this during the 1800's against Central American countries.

Think about Napoleon returning from his first exile to France. He walked into the assembly unarmed and the military immediately sided with him and he regained control immediately, hugely pissing off England and it's allies so much that they declared war on France right off the bat.
