Making Money with meetup.com

As I browsed meetup.com last night I stumbled across this http://www.meetup.com/Photography-Events-by-Amy/

After looking at the numbers, this lady is pulling in about $2600 in just two days combined in the month of January. These are basic workshops shes offering, nothing special. Shes also a complete hack and has no photographic skill whatsoever, shes basically selling gimmicky bullshit like "how to turn a photo into a painting".

I'm thinking as spring approaches I could form a meetup group offering photography workshops, but higher end, more about actually becoming a good photographer. I'd hold two workshops a month with a smaller group of 3-6 people to emphasize more on one on one training. The Package I would offer would be feature rich and unique, with one on one training in a great location, a sit down theory discussion, post processing training, portfolio critique, all in one day. I'd charge a premium for this.

Its worth mentioning that I'm an experienced photographer and I know I have a lot to offer.

I cant help but think there is a good amount of money to be made with the right amount of planing. With a little more digging there appears to be quite a few of these meetup groups leading workshops in my area, making decent money with what appears to be a half assed approach.

I'm wondering if anyone here has tried this or thought about it. I'm sure plenty of guys here could capitalize on this as well.

Yep. As long as you have enough skills to charge money for, you should totally do it!

I saw this guy offering canyoneering workshop. It's basically canyoneering together as a group but he is there as an instructor.
it was 3 day thing. (only includes instruction, you bring your own meal and camping equipment)

He said the value was $300 but he would take whatever you feel like. he had credit card machine too.

Those canyoneering instruction is pretty expensive from the company. I was thinking about paying him $100 but it got sold out quick.

I think he limited it to 5 people. So this guy does this as a hobby. He wanted to get out to the wilderness for few days.

He has to babysit 5 adults. But in the end, he would walk away at least +$500 plus from the vacation. Sounds pretty sweet right?

I am not sure if meetup.com allows such commercial activity on their site though.

I am honestly thinking about opening a website that connects people like you and people who are interested in learning anything directly from an individual.

Is there a website like that?

^ some sections of craigslist

Though maybe there's room for improvement. E.g. user feedback/reviews, interface, instructors can place ads on front page targeted to a location/demographic

Might be a sweet project!

Meetups.com seems to be full of old people and beta-->omegas in my city.

Which probably means a great place to make money.
