Don't panic just yet though. Having an HSV-1 infection isn't a guarantee of getting AD. It just raises the risk, probably if have certain genes that make you more vulnerable.

It's interesting though; I wonder if the aging Baby Boomer (de)Generation, knowing their promiscuous sexual history will see higher rates of Alzheimer's.

Just about everyone has HSV-1, and most contracted it in childhood when a relative gave them a kiss on their cheek.

So many people test positive for HSV-1 on a STD panel that doctors will give you the "all-clear" of std's if that's the only thing that comes up.

This kind of post is STD fear mongering in my opinion, but perhaps you're just not aware.

Yeah everyone has it, just most people are lucky enough to not actually get visible cold sores. Sadly, I am not one of those people, and they show up at the most inconvenient times.

Oh for fuck's sake, everyone has HSV 1. There's a decent chance you have HSV 2 if you've subscribed to the player lifestyle, as 90% of carriers never show symptoms and the virus can be transmitted asymptomatically. Even while using condoms it's very possible to get it on your groin or balls. "Disease ridden sluts"? I had a notch count of ~7 and none of the girls I slept with were obvious skanks. I got genital HSV 2 asymptomatically on my groin from one of them while using condoms. You play roulette when you play the game. It's not the end of the world and obviously I've had to adapt my game but it's ridiculous to perpetuate a nasty stigma for something that babies can pick up from their grandmas kissing them.

As others have said, HSV 1 is more common than the freaking common cold. While it is possible to contact it on your sex organs, it actually isn't as likely as HSV 2 being contacted on your mouth or face (you've probably seen those eye commercials that mention HSV 2 being contacted in the eye...guess how that happens hehehe).

The only real problem with herpes or either variety comes about if you are immune-compromised due to cancer or HIV/AIDS or some other problem. But then, you have much worse problems to worry about.

The only other real problem with HSV 1 and 2 is with women and childbirth. While somewhat rare, it can cause encephalitis and other infections to the brain, brain stem, and lining of the brain in newborns. I think this is more common when there are a number of other factors, like low birth weight or other conditions like HIV infected babies, but there have been cases where infants contracted neonatal HSV infections due to Orthodox Jewish Mohels using their mouth to suck blood out of the circumcision wound. Several little boys have died due to this fucked up procedure.

Or circumcision if you're Jewish as many cases have been documented where newborns got herpes as young as 6 day old.
