The Montevideo Experience

There’s not a whole lot of data on Montevideo on this forum (a couple token threads, and nothing really wholly devoted to Montevideo) and I feel like it’s a bit of a shame because I really enjoyed the city. I think it’s a perfect place to spend a week in, or at the least, a long weekend. There isn’t a tonne of things to do for a visitor, but there is a nice old town, beaches nearby, decent nightlife, and it’s a super chilled out capital city. Montevideo is definitely my kind of place and I would like to go back sometime. I think it could be an excellent place to retire in considering its proximity to the coast of Uruguay and Buenos Aires and its chilled-out vibe and relatively developed economy.

Cost:

Montevideo is a fairly expensive city by South American standards. Not Rio or Sao Paulo levels, but it’s definitely more expensive than Buenos Aires. I blew quite a bit of money there despite only being there for a week.

Food:

I really enjoyed the food here. That being said, it could get old after a longer period of time. Lots of meat and the pizza was okay as well (a little on the heavy side though). If you come here, you definitely have to get a chivito, these sandwiches are the bomb. There are tonnes of variations, but it’s typically a piece of milanesa, ham, cheese, bacon, and eggs, with the typical tomatoes, lettuce, or whatever. I ate a bunch of these and they never disappointed. The meat is also exceptionally good. I would say the quality is just as good, or even better, than Argentina. If you have never had mate before, this is probably the most accessible place to give it a go. Hell, you will see countless people walking around with a thermos and a mate caldron when going about their daily business.

Women:

The Uruguayanas are very cute, mostly thin, and fairly friendly. I feel like, while the top talent isn’t as nice as across the water in BA, the bitch shields are easier to penetrate and the consistency in attractive girls is pretty good. That being said, this is Rioplatanese game and it can be a bitch. Approaching sets can be suicide missions. They may just rip you to pieces and send you with your tail between your legs within seconds. I find isolation here to be pretty important, you get a girl away from her friends and all of sudden she a lot more amicable and open to being approached. I waited for opportune moments at the bar or smoke pit for the vast majority of my approaches.

After you engage with a girl, I found compliment and pull away game to be pretty good. Rioplatanese people are known for their egos, throw in a nice compliment but don’t shower with compliments then totally switch the conversation to something totally random and pull back physically. It’s almost like they get this big rush and then get all flustered when you do a 180 on them in a second. That being said, even getting to this point can be difficult, the majority of girls will just shut you down right away. Other than that, I just played standard Latina game, something I have commented on this board a few times now.

Daygame:

I don’t really partake, but I do like to include it for the people who do. The shopping center in Pocitos is full of cute girls. There are also the beaches along the sea in Pocitos and further east that had a bunch of pretty beautiful girls around. The best street game in Centro is probably Avenida 18 de Julio and Costa Rica (they are right beside each other). The former is basically the main street that goes from the Old Town through downtown. The latter is a street that is less traffic, but a bunch of restaurants are on this street and there is plenty of talent there. This being said, I would think the best place to daygame, bar none, is Mercado Del Puerto on a Saturday. Sit down, eat some bomb ass meat, and approach some girls. What makes this place good is it’s actually known to the locals as a common pickup spot during the day.

Nightlife:

I thought the nightlife was pretty good on the weekend. I don’t think there is a point going out from Sunday-Wednesday really, it’s pretty quiet. However, Friday and Saturday nights were quite good. There are basically two “areas” of nightlife in Montevideo: Bartolome Mitre and Pocitios. Bartolome Mitre is a street in the old city that is packed with bars, gets pretty busy later in the night towards and on the weekends. Pocitios is the higher end area, near the World Trade Center there are a bunch of resto-bars and a few clubs. Thursday and Friday I would go to the old town, Saturday is when Pocitios is banging.

Other than that, there are an assortment of bars scattered around downtown and other areas, one of which, called La Ronda is close to the ocean just down the road from the main plaza (Plaza Independencia). Not really a bar per se, it’s basically a hole in the wall with some tables, benches, and chairs on the sidewalk outside. Just like in Argentina, things kick off pretty late, especially for Pocitos, I wouldn’t really go until at least 2 AM unless you want to eat or drink before down there.
I stayed at a hostel, which isn’t my ideal situation but considering my logistics for the trip it was the easier thing to do. I also got a bang out of it so I can’t complain.

Some Stories:

I hit the jackpot 5 minutes into my first nightlife experience in Montevideo. I was walking to La Ronda and meet a couple locals on the street on the way. I arrive at the bar, and am talking to some people standing out front and all of a sudden this girl starts yelling out from a table like 10 meters away in English asking where I am from and what I am doing, blah blah. I tell her I need to find an ATM because I don’t have any cash and if she could help me show where one is (which is bullshit I already knew there was one literally a block up the street). Before I could even pull out money I am making out with this girl in the bank. Went back to the bar with her for a bit, went to some love motel (funny enough, fairly expensive city, but this love motel in the middle of centro was dirt cheap) and fucked. Right place, right time I guess, this girl was an obvious gringo hunter and was looking to get filled that night.

The next night was a fucking shit show. I had met these pretty crazy Brasilieros in the hostel and we were pre-drinking there. I asked them if I could score some of the vodka that they had bought at the duty free and they gave me a bunch. We walked to Pocitos and for some reason they wouldn’t help me out with the vodka. By the time we got to Pocitos I had downed a whole water bottle of pure vodka (pretty stupid decision but I felt bad not to drink it all) in probably about 25 minutes. Needless to say, I was absolutely obliterated. The last thing I remember was dancing and making out with some Argentina chick that I had pried away from a set that we opened. The next two hours of the night I have no recollection whatsoever of what happened. When I finally came to, I was getting looked at doctors, in a hotel room, with an ambulance outside, with my shoes on but no socks (what the hell?), and them trying to talk to me. How on earth I ended up in a hotel room missing my socks I will never know. Did I fuck the Argentinian girl? What the hell happened? I came to and told them that I was fine and walked out of the hotel and somehow found my way back to the hostel. It was nights like these that I stopped drinking for 6 months haha, should probably get back on that wagon soon.

After that night I took it easy for the next couple of days. On Sunday, a group of Israelis had come into the hostel and I had my eye on one of the girls there. She was pretty damn cute and I wanted to talk to her but never got the chance because Israelis keep a pretty close knit group. Finally one night I was going out for a smoke and she was sitting there by herself. I talked to her for about 3 hours straight and finally kissed her. I didn’t push for the bang because of obvious logistical reasons. The next day I joined the Israelis at the beach. Quick note about Israelis, be careful when hanging out with them because they will only speak in Hebrew unless addressed personally in English. Luckily I was able to convince the girl to go swimming with me and we had some fun in the water. That night I went with them to Colonia del Sacramento, we got a private room together and this girl turned into a fucking freak. Unfortunately the bed was such a squeaky piece of shit that it made so much noise that I am pretty sure the whole hotel heard and she got kind of embarrassed about it and it kind of wrecked the mood. This girl was down for whatever though, hair-pulling, biting, smacks; don’t ever trust an Israeli; she seemed like a sweetheart but then turned into a total cunt once/during/after I fucked her.

So all in all, it was a good week. All things considered, probably one of my most successful weeks in South America to date. I was particularly proud of the completely sober pick-up of the Israeli considering the multiple cock-blocking possibilities. The Uruguayana chick was just lucky and well, I was the piece of meat not her. Who knows what even happened the Saturday night, although I have to question why I would wake up in a freaking hotel haha. All I can say is Montevideo was a rollercoaster.

Good to know you had a good weekend in montevideo. The place have the reputation of beign boring compared to BA, but after your datasheet, i am tempted to try the city sometime (yes, it is shamefull that i never visited the place beign just a couple of hours by ferry).

Nice report, I've met a few people from Uruguay and they seemed really chill and friendly and the girls overall were really cute. Now that they are legalizing cannabis down there it makes me a bit more curious about traveling there, I may do it in combination with Argentina one day, if only the women in Argentina were easier to lay and less stuck up, I'd be down there in a heartbeat.

^ You could do a Brazil and Uruguay combination instead.

I met two Uruguayan girls in Buenos Aires a while back and I was very impressed in the way they carried themselves. They were easily the nicest girls I met in my whole trip in Argentina.

The country recently legalized marijuana, it will be interesting to see how it unfolds, OP, did you smoke any ganja there?

The Brazilians bought some at the mall. Was very easy to buy. It wasn't very good.

The guy that was working at the hostel had some better stuff though.

I don't know, you were pretty lucky pal! I live in montevideo and its pretty hard to pick up chicks here. Social cirles are everything in Argentina and mainly in Uruguay which is smaller. Everytime i have gone to la ronda with other friends ( we are decent good looking, and we have good jobs and money) we have been torn to pieces but the local girls there. Too much drama, bad princess attitudes, close minded people. We now resort to deal with foreigners which are much nicer. We met some canadians and american girls which were really nice, the total opposite to the girls from Uruguay. If you think porteñas are harder to crack, Uruguayans are worse because they have this small town mentality which makes things a lot more difficult to deal with. Anyway im happy you had a great time In Montevideo, Uruguay is always underlooked but it think is a great country to live. Girls are beautiful but the problem is their attitude....

You caught them away from their native countries. I'm sure they would be acting much different in Canada and the US respectively.

The weed law has been passed but its not yet functional. In theory you will be able to buy weed at a pharmacy store but only if you are a citizen or legal resident of Uruguay. Of course that would be easy to fix if you know somebody here....

There are tonnes of Brazilians vacationing in Montevideo. I met more Brazilians than any other nationality while I was there.

There was a group of 10 Brazilian girls the first night in the hostel. A bunch of other Brazilians were staying there. At La Ronda there was another huge group of Brazilians. And then just as I was leaving another large group of Brazilians came into the hostel. There are quite a few conventions in Montevideo which draws Brazilians down there.

I was barely speaking any Spanish while I was there, mostly just Portuguese (although my Portuguese is extremely rusty now - I am hoping to relearn it once I have an excellent handle on my Spanish).

If you go to the beach towns there will be many there as well such as Punta del Este, Punto del Diabo, and Cabo Polonio.

The best time to come to Uruguay is between December - March, and mainly going to the east coast where all the Uruguayans, Argentineans and Brazilians go: beaches. Punta del Este is expensive but the quality of the girls is the best, world class, but as i said very expensive and very tight closed social groups. Beaches in Rocha, like Punta de Diablo, La Pedrera would be easier, more hipster type girls but still this is Rio platense culture chicks are difficult to crack. Your best bet is hitting the brazilians, but keep in mind these are mainly from the south of brazil, a totally different attitude than cariocas or northeastern brazilian women. Gringo status here is meaningless, there is no god white factor, most of the people here descend from europeans(mainly italians and spanish). English is not widely spoken so you better speak spanish.
In a nutshell i would say come to Uruguay in the summer, enjoy the beaches, the laid back culture, and admire the chicks, but DONT THINK YOU WILL LAND IN THE PROMISED EASY CHICK LAND. if you get one enjoy her the best you can!! [Image: smile.gif]

Cabo Polonio is a good spot to hit, east of Punta.

The harder you practice, the luckier you get.
