Check out Charles P. Rodgers website. They make beds and mattresses and sell exclusively online. I have one of their platform beds and a Biltmore mattress. I bought both without physically seeing it feeling either, and I couldn't be happier. The bed is made of solid mahogany and the mattress is pretty firm which is exactly how I like it and its a combination memory foam and latex with plentiful, high-quality springs. Best part on the frame is it has very little hardware so it goes together insanely easy and has been very stable given the use it gets. Can't recommend them enough and they have great sales around all the holidays like a car dealership. I even picked up a leather headboard so the ladies heads are protected. After all, I am a gentleman

Seriously though, I would recommend one of those pillowtop kinds, they add an extra level of softness.

After going to memory foam years ago, I'll never buy another spring mattress.

This is what I currently have:

They can be really hot and too firm though.
If you're a back sleeper, Memory Foam is alright.
Side sleepers, go with a traditional mattress on the softer side.

Stomach sleeper, I'd also go with a traditional mattress.

Also, if you buy memory foam new, it can have toxic fumes and you'll need to air it out for a few days. Look out for that.

I sleep on my side and the memory foam mattress I have isn't too firm to be uncomfortable.

It only gets hotter in the summer and with central air or a fan the mattress collecting heat isn't that big of a deal.

I looked into this topic extensively when I was in your situation not too long ago. I read Consumer Reports articles, heard from Ikeafanboys, and basically did my due diligence.

Basically it comes down to how much you are willing to spend. If you want the best, it is hard to beat the Tempur-pedic mattress. It's top of the line. It is what I bought, and it's very comfortable and also good for your back.

Think of it as an investment. You will use this mattress, hopefully, nearly every day for the rest of your life (do memory foam mattresses die or wear out?). Sleep affects every part of your life so you may as well have the best.

Two issues are, cost and sleeping style. I hadn't even thought about guys who do not sleep on their backs. If you don't sleep on your back, then maybe a memory foam mattress is not for you.

Cost - new Tempur-pedic mattresses can go for thousands of pesos. I bought mine used on Craigslist and transported it using a hired truck - total cost, about $900. But that is an option for me - the economies of scale and competition of living in a large city. I think that it would be much harder to find that good a deal in a small town in New Mexico, for example.

You may wish to go try out the different mattresses that are on display at the mattress store. But my recommendation, after looking into it long and hard, is the Tempur-pedic (queen size is quite nice, big enough for two people or just one - King feels almost too big).

It's quite good for not making much noise when your flatmates are around. There are no squeaky springs.

It feels more natural in a way. You just sink into the mattress. But yeah, that doesn't have quite the emotional kick of banging her out on a loud, shifting, unsteady mattress!

Memory foam is way too hard for me. I have a serta with a pillow top, it's like sleeping on a cloud.

The noise issue is a good point (springs). I don't have flatmates but it's an older bldg. with tenants in close proximity.

I recently bought an IKEA memory foam mattress. While it is comfortable, the problem of off-gas is real. I left the mattress outside for more than 2 weeks before using, and have been using for more than 40 days now. It still smells somewhat. I may exchange it with one of their organic beds. If you are sensititve to smell, think twice or find a memory foam which does not smell that bad. Good luck.

I've currently got a memory foam mattress, and it seems to grow arms in the mornings when I have to get up. Unfortunately though, it's too soft for having decent sex on. When I come to replace it, I'll end up getting a firm mattress.

I ended up getting a spring one.

While I do like the memory foam I will probably leave the mattress behind when I next move (and wouldn't want to abandon a quality mem. foam).
