The cost of getting lean: Is it really worth the trade-off? [Infographic]

Some people have no idea what a great tool a six pack can be for getting laid or maybe they are just haters who knows, the father of aesthetics had it right that's for sure

^ I don't know, my abs are pretty exceptional, and I've never been laid because of them. I don't do online dating though, and wouldn't use a shirtless picture if I did. Friends will bring it up when we're out sometimes and get me to show girls, but while they seem impressed for a second, it's back to grinding it out, going through the game motions, soon after.

The only time I really remember it being a big deal, was when I was playing football in summer with my shirt off in the park, and some jail-baits started taking photos, and one of them was shouting that her friend liked me and stuff like that. Too young though unfortunately.

I'd be really interested to hear how other members leverage their six-packs into bangs as maybe I'm missing out (I'm not doing online though).

But aren't you also over 6 foot tall and less than 150lbs?

With that build no one will know you have a six pack until you've already gotten them into bed.

I have to agree with RioNomad. You know the saying:

Abs on a skinny guy are like big boobs on a fat chick. It doesn't count.

You have to look swole with your shirt on. Countless times in bars or clubs, girls go from grabbing my arm or chest, to lifting up my t-shirt to check for abs. I am pretty lean but not lean enough for a clearly defined six-pack so I always pretend it's rude and start evaluating their bodies.

A friend was at my bar (I was working) and showed me progress photos and he looked a lot sicker than expected. I tell this hot girl next to him who was also waiting to order, she lifts his shirt and boom! she is visibly impressed and immediately engages him. The guy next to her was not pleased.

Is the cost worth it?

You should be lifting regardless, so that's not the cost. To get visible abs, the additional effort required is just eating right. More not doing something (eat like shit) than anything else. Careful planning and some cooking. Nonetheless, with a busy schedule (and lack of discipline) that's pretty hard.

That's probably what it is, but even when I was much bigger, back when I messed with bodybuilding in my early twenties, the six-pack just wasn't the big-deal that I thought it should have been.

This is good. I have a lot of respect for John Berardi and Precision Nutrition.

Judging from that infographic, I'm probably in the 15 to 20% category right now; on the lower end of that spectrum. It's incredibly easy to maintain. I work out like once or twice a week, make sure that I eat healthy most of the time and don't drink a lot of alcohol. In the summer, I was one category lower I think. The only difference there was that I was working out 5 or 6 times a week; weight lifting and mountain biking. I definitely had more energy and looked better. I've never been any lower than 12% body fat. I enjoy eating, going out to eat etc more than wanting to be any leaner. For me personally, that's where I draw the line at the trade off.

Probably in the 10-12% range, and yeah I don't use my picture with the sixpack as my main online dating profile, but surely as maybe the 3rd or 4th.

In real life however, I find that appearance is just the foot in the door. You'll get shot down anyway and sometimes it's my friend with a pretty big belly going home with a girl

I suspect the guys saying it's easy tend towards the younger side...

I always find weight loss tricky. You cut calories/intake but then your metabolism slows... The body's natural state seems to be obtaining equilibrium. I think the problem is this: being thin/low body fat is healthy, but the process of getting there in itself may not be. What I mean by that is, you are inducing an artificial form of starvation and adding another stressor to your life.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

Better question how to go from 13% to 9% quickly without losing mass? As an ectomorph last thing I want to do is become smaller. At 6 ft 175 , I think I would have to drop to 160-165 to be cut up. Brad dropped to 155.

Not sure but I'd say keep lifting while dieting, and try taking BCAAs between meals.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

Why quickly? A slow cut is a righteous cut. If you're really 13% now then you've got a lean body mass of 152 lbs. A cut down to 160 would put you at 5% body fat which is insane. Cut 500 Calories/day out of your diet and you'll hit 165 in two months.

But 152 lbs of lean body mass at 6ft isn't very much. I'm 5'10" and have 170lbs of lean body mass. Cut down to 10% and then slowly bulk back up to 12% rinse and repeat and eventually you'll be 8% bf at your current weight and look much better than being 8% at 165.

It's been proven that the less body fat you have, the less sleep you require:
