Help Me Make My First Location Independent Move To SE Asia

My............ *****, Cafe Mocha! You be playing basketball in pelican bay!

Just wanted to thank everyone who input advice and feedback here. As promised, here's a section of my ticket to back things up XD.

On booking the ticket:

I used Aeroplan miles, travelhacking, and some helpful hints from a friend.

I'll be flying out of Ottawa. Instead of dealing with God awful connections or sleeping in airports, I used some extra Aeroplan miles and 80$ to do the following:

- Leave Feb.16 from Ottawa and go to Vancouver (5 hour flight), ~ 5pm - 11pm Ottawa time, get there 8:40pm Vancouver time

Stay in Vancouver for 6 days and hang out with a friend

- Leave Feb.22 from Vancouver and go to Hong Kong, ~12pm - 1am Vancouver time, get there 5:45pm HK time on Feb.23

Explore Hong Kong for 4 days

- Direct flight from Hong Kong to Saigon (Vietnam) on Feb.27, ~3:20 - 5:45pm HK time, get there around 4:45pm Saigon time.

I used Aeroplan miles to book Ottawa - Vancouver, and Vancouver to HK. HK is a major hub airport in Asia where a lot of international flight go to and from. My friend suggested I try flying here, then getting a direct flight to Saigon and it made my flights FAR better. Other ones I'd get in around midnight then have 14 hours before the next, etc.

Now I begin the process of getting some Visas, making more friends, and preparing!

.... and pipelining for the first 2 weeks where I plan to party XD.

I feel nervous but REALLY excited!!!

In case you were wondering, the trip costed me in total $420. The hotel in Hong Kong is an extra $140, so $560 altogether let's say.

Going through the Air Canada website and booking a direct flight to Saigon, not being able to select my times, sleeping in airport etc... The cost is $2,000.

Travelhacking rules.

Any questions, ask away! Hope to see y'all in SEA!

Couple questions:
What hotel in H.K. are you staying at?
What metro station is it close to?
Is it a guest house or hotel?

If it's decent, I'm assuming you travel hacked it for that price - $140 for 4 nights sounds pretty damn good for H.K.

The guest houses usually consist of 4 - 5 tiny rooms on like a 4th floor of some random building in the city at $60 or less per night. The other floors are normally used for commercial purposes.

Some guest houses are pretty shitty for example there's host of different ones in "The Chungking Mansion" at Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon (downtown). Some are low end and some are decent but, in my opinion that whole building is death to be in (too chaotic) unless you want to buy a suit.

I'd recommend the 5-6th floor of "The Golden Crown Court" building at Tsim Sha Tsui, it's slightly up the road from The Chungking Mansion and will run you around $45 a night and up. Quiet secure building, decent sized rooms, clean, western amenities i.e. the shower actually has it's own compartment in the bathroom and high speed internet. Apart from the lack of lobby and room service it really is like a hotel.

You'd be hard pressed to find an actual hotel for even $100 a night in the Tsim Sha Tsui area. It is a bit "touristy" but, great if you want to get acclimatized to the city.

I've got a Russian connect (surprise surprise), who will probably take you out and show you around the city. He's kind of a blue pill, relationship type guy but still an intelligent, positive fun and even slightly rowdy guy once he's had few.

I also found a great tailor in the CK Mansion, slightly pricier than the majority of tailors in H.K. though. They supply some suits for Harry Rosen in Canada, Russell Peters and Rodger Federer when they're in town, you'll see pictures of them getting measured on the wall. Anything from $130 to just over $2,000 (normally including a custom made shirt or two) and they can get er' done in a day or two.

Feel free to PM me for more details.

You are bang on. I'm at the Cebu Hotel/Hostel in CK Mansion. Had decent reviews, so I went for it. Honestly it totally slipped my mind that you had spent time in HK while near GZ, ah lesson learned! Booking is non-refundable. I'm sure I'll survive though (I've done party hostels in Europe after all XD). Reviews said this had good internet and decent rooms.

Sounds good re: the guy! Send me contact details please!

Going to wait on suits until Vietnam I think. I want to spend my days in HK exploring the city, I'll have plenty of time for fine tailoring in Vietnam.

I have been looking at pictures of Vietnemese girlies. I'm getting excited XD.
