International Flight Question

I have a wedding in January in Mexico. Has anyone ever done this, or can I get away with this?

Direct flights from my city are roughly $550

Flights from another city with a layover in my city are $350, a $200 difference.

Is it possible for int'l flights to book the trip out of another city, with the layover in my home city, and just get on the flight in my city (the layover) and save $200, and still be able to get on the flight?

If you miss the first segment of your trip (ie, the flight from the origin to the layover, your home city) the other segments of your travel will automatically be cancelled by the airline.

Unfortunately there's no way around this.

You can only do it on the return trip with carry on bags.

I think you might be able to book it and then call the airline a couple days later saying, "hi my plans have changed, I am going to drive to the layover city, I would like to take the flight from there." I've never done it but once you've booked the ticket, the airline can just sell that seat again if you back out of it.
