Be A Man - Trailer/Sizzle Reel

Stumbled across this on reddit. The dude just seems like a nice fat guy, raised by his mom, grandmother and great grandmother. I can understand why he may be on a journey to figure out what is a man, but I wish he didn't seem to be so happy with his current beta state. Just weird how people want to expose themselves so badly for attention. Sad actually.

Guy is pretty huge. Vinny Paz is trailer, for all you boxing fans.

From the kickstarter page.

Why did you want to make this documentary?

I was raised the way a lot of boys are; by a single mom with no dad around. I grew up in a family of women with no real male role models to look to other than the men I saw in TV and movies. What "Manly" things I needed to know, I taught myself or I made up as I went along. So when my wife told me she was pregnant, I realized that I had no idea what it meant to be a father, what it meant to be a man in a child’s life. I realized that in order for me to be the father I wanted to be, I needed first to be a man. With the help of some friends and some amazingly talented people, I wanted to go back and learn the things I never had and confront the ideas I had in my mind of what a man should be. Now that we’ve filmed the documentary, I can honestly say that it was an experience that was both fun and deeply personal. I can’t wait to share it with you.

In the real world, it is possible to meet quite a few guys who are like this guy. He kind of wants to become a man and to learn more what it is to be a man; however, it remains questionable whether he is going to take sufficient measures to follow through.

He could join RVF and participate in a few threads, work on his physique and his perceptions of the world, maybe get a girlfriend or two on the side, but maybe in the end, he just is NOT going to work hard enough to make changes to become more manly.

Sometimes, when I meet these kinds of people in real life, I will talk with them for a while, and generally, they will be content with their ways of personally interacting with people and they are likely NOT going to change very much - unless maybe if he got a divorce or had a heart attack or some real life changing event that will motivate him into really seriously considering means to reconsider his social interactions his perceptions of the world and his place within the world.

Maybe that is part of the interesting thing about the documentary to see some of his lack of manly ideas and to ponder whether the guy will change to become more manly. I am fairly certain that an RVF produced documentary would take this whole transformation process to a whole new level (as compared with the mainstream concepts of "change"). For example, get the guy to work with Fisto for 6 months. hehehehe... [Image: lol.gif] or Giovonny, or worse yet, El Mech... (now that would be a story)

I like this idea because I feel that too much of our cultural "conversation" centers around all things female. Films like this help recenter our society around men, even if it's in a small way.

This is important, because it seems to be that the more our society centers around female interests and women's identities, the more men's interests are deemed a sinful and wrong. We're now in an era where the same aggressive sexuality that's praised in female pop singers like Gaga, Ke$ha, and Beyonce is being shamed when it's a guy like Robin Thicke.

I'm not sure how things went from being male-centered to having a constant barrage of TV shows like "Two Broke Girls," "The New Girl," and "The Mindy Project," endless female-driven movies ("Hunger Games"), and female pop singers being bigger celebrities than their male counterparts.

And don't get me started on female-centric kids entertainment like "Dora the Whor-a," or whatever she's called.

But none of this bodes well for men being raised in this culture right now. This guy speaks of not having a role model in his own life. But my theory is that's harmed more than individual men. It's harmed our culture. Men now see the female "voice" as central to their lives, not the male voice, and that's why we're being deluged with all things female in movies, TV, and music.

Sometimes it seems to be that the last great era for being a man in our culture was the '70s and '80s, when men ranging from the guys in Lynyrd Skynyrd to President Reagan were unapologetically masculine.

This guy isn't exactly bringing back the Marlboro Man, but he is trying in his own way to alter the focus of our culture, so I give him props.

I applaud the guy for trying to grow as a person. Just like anytime I see some fat person in the gym, I sort of wish them success quietly in my head. I want people to do well in life.

I just don't think everything needs to shared. At some point with all this constant sharing, there won't be enough doing since all people will be doing is watching other people on social media, etc. I am exaggerating, but I hope you get my drift.
