Alaska!. "the rape capital of the U.S"

This artical is insane..

[b]According to the 2010 Alaska Victimization Survey, the most comprehensive data to date, 59 percent of Alaskan women have been victims of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or both.

But those numbers, say researchers, just skim the surface, since sex crimes are generally underreported, and may be particularly underreported in Alaska for cultural reasons. “Those numbers are conservative,” says Ann Rausch, a program coordinator at Alaska’s Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. “They’re still staggering.”

About every 5 minutes in America you hear something about sexual assault, domestic violence or sex offenders.
In Colombia this month, can't remember one conversation where any of these things were mentioned.

According to these people, women's rights in Alaska are twice worse than in Zimbabwe and Congo.

I've been to Alaska and I'm surprised judging by the looks of the women there that men are having sex with them at all.

Its an Eskimo thing, in Canadian Native communities, especially the remote ones way up north, sexual assault is very common and has been for a long time, way before the white man showed up. My aunt is a nurse at a small hospital on a remote island in BC and has also worked up in the Arctic, she says that the things she sees and stories she hears on the reserves are truly appalling.

I once met a 7/10 in Seattle who told me her dream was to become a nurse and work in a Native community in Alaska.

I told her with a straight face that that was a great way to get raped.

Also in Seattle met a man (80+ years old) who claimed one of his relatives was the first registered nurse in Alaska. I bet SHE had some fucking gut wrenching stories.

Way back read an article about an abuse shelter that was almost forced to close due to budget cuts. It stayed open with anonymous donations after they published a couple stories about Native women who took shelter and were pursued by the BF/husband who, brandishing an axe, banged on the shelter's steel bunker door until the wee hours of the morning. The tribal police don't even mess with that shit or are drunk themselves.

If anyone is interested knowing how it can get in these communities when just a little alcohol is added, I'd highly recommend reading the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. He describes meeting the Indians of Upstate New York and trying to secure their aid against the French. After they signed a defensive pact, the Americans gave them a few bottles of whiskey and gin and went to sleep. The Indians started bonfires and came and pounded on the doors of the cabins in which the settlers were staying like demons out of hell. Scared the shit out of Franklin (who was no wimp). The next day they had no fucking memory of what happened and apologized claiming demons possessed them. Same shit is happening today.

FFS the US Navy used to send Revenue Cutter ships to stop whalers and Russians from selling Hawaiian rum to Eskimos who would literally stack every whale bone and item of possession on the cold arctic beaches to trade for a few sips of firewater.

Yeah, I don't feel like that rape statistic is heavily inflated at all. Native Americans might have it the worst out of any ethnic group in the US. My cousin worked as a doctor on an aboriginal reservation somewhere up in northern Canada, and he has similar stories about the ridiculous levels of alcohol-driven rape in the Native territories.

How exactly do they claim that X % of people have been raped, and then in the same breath say that most rapes go unreported? Just doesn't make any sense.

The statistics actually have little to do with Eskimos, no matter how fun it is to talk about them. They are less than 10% of the population.

Here is why the numbers are so fucked up: this includes domestic violence (think Ray Rice) between partners in the same domicile. So, Ray Rice behavior in Anchorage is being grouped together with Eskimos Gone Wild behavior out in the bush.

When the weather is shit -- in Siberia, Alaska, Canada or Scotland -- two things happen:

1) people drink and consequently
2) people beat the shit out of each other
