from what i saw in this documentary

tourist are forbidden to talk or interact with locals, social disruption/agitation of any kind from foreigners is not accepted , check out the mark at 32:38, how the fucked up travel guide is proud of harassing curious tourists, jealously is the most common feeling there.
Its a really fake and boring place to live, official history is pure mithology of how the great leader descended from the skies, a whole society without any identity

Yeah heard about this story. No one really knows what exactly happened to him other than the fact he went to North Korea. I doubt the Norks would lie about him tearing up his visa and detain him, though.

I don't get why people want to go to that shithole given the risks involved. We're talking about a country that used to kidnap Japanese citizens from Japanese territory and force them to live and work there.
