New worries about ID theft via banks like Chase?

In travelling abroad, the greatest risk is a passport theft or credit card or bank card loss.

Or, worse, simply losing one's phone or laptop to the unscrupulous, who then hack one's ID. (Presumably, most here use some variation on cloud computing to "back up" one's work, thereby making the impact of the loss less substantial and easier to recover from[/i].)

Does anyone use the premier, guaranteed theft recovery for our toys, Lojack?

To add to your travelling concerns comes this announcement of a major hack of JP Morgan Chase bank in New York City - the largest in the US. Urgent: Checking and savings account information stolen from major banks. (The August 27th post is from syndicated radio computer expert in the US, "Kim Kommando.") The information hack of sensitive account information occurred earlier in August.

In the above BB thread, one man reports that he has a CC with Chase that is never used - but charges did show up on the unused account recently, and he had wondered if it was because of a hack at Chase - now confirmed. (Plus, there's another report of an anomalous charge at Chase in the above thread, but small potatos.)

This report, however, hints at something more disturbing:

My wife works for an agency that investigates id theft. She says [this particular info theft] is overwhelmingly huge now. They cannot begin to get ahead of it.

Naturally, the bank promises ready surveillance of suspicious activity:

The source of the hack is attributed to Russia, possibly related to the ongoing dismemberment of Ukraine and Western sanctions against Russian involvement.

"...sources say that the attack goes 'far beyond the capabilities of ordinary hackers.' Given the timing, some security experts are speculating it was the work of high-level Russian hackers."

In addition to Chase, four other yet-to-be named banks are possibly involved.
