Buying a cheap Condo abroad
I've thought about this a lot. It came down to 'how often, and how long would I use i, and can I make money from it when i'm not there'. But I have come to the conclusion that I don't want to be tied down to something like that, even for retirement. So I am seriously considering a live aboard sail boat, when i'm tired of a place, I can just cast off and go somewhere else.
A person's wants and needs are always changing, I would just rent it is much cheaper and stress free. Home ownership is overrated.
Just be careful about foreign laws..and they can change. I have a great place in San Telmo argentina I bought for investment and it rents out and makes money. But selling it is tough (i lost the deed and forgot to pay taxes on it for 5 years). Also remember that what may sounds cool (built is 1860, high celings, massive doors what history!) could translate into (shitload of repairs) cause this building is ancient!
Another problem? Many times you have to pay all cash. Which is crazy when banks are charging 4.5% for commercial loans in the US.
