I'm not sure about native sites, but the top international real estate site is currently http://www.fusedworld.com

Although it has a lot of places for rent, it doesn't specialize in short term rentals as http://www.vrbo.com does.

How about this idea: a subforum where each country or major city gets its own thread, and then apartment/hotel recommendations can go inside. This way if you're going to one specific country, you don't have to sift through a lot of threads.

I think you are better off starting with one general forum where people can post apartment related information, whether it's recommendations or apartments wanted.

When you subdivide it up into too many subforums, it breaks up the flow and you are going to find that the popular places like Brazil, Thailand etc. will get all the traffic. Most people will go straight to their area of interest and not bother with anything else. In a wider forum, a poster might see threads from other countries that he can respond to as well. If it gets too busy in one general forum, you can think about splitting it up.

This is a little off topic, but:

Considering the type of places that you like to rent (short term apartments), have you ever thought of investing in something like this?

Video Camera Finder

If I traveled as much as you, I might consider one. I think that the chances of being recorded are high, given enough short term rentals.

I am heading to what seems like one of the most expensive cities (Stockholm). Any suggestions? It may be more appropriate to start another thread or have another section to start a thread in ; but for now, in the interest of time, I thought I'd start here. So far:

-Hotels (very expensive)
-Bed and breakfast (these appear ok, but bringing in a girl seems a bit difficult)
-Cottages (these are good, but seem to be in the outskirts of the city and I don't plan on renting a car)

Anyhow, good suggestions are appreciated and will feed into a greater report [Image: smile.gif]

Stockholm is definitely very expensive, it was when I lived there a few years ago and I am assuming it didn't any cheaper since then either. The below is based on when I used to live there, so there might be differences.

In terms of accommodation, I wouldn't suggest living too far away from the city. The city is actually quite small, and their Metro system is pretty good and it runs until around mid-night more or less and starts again early morning. But it will be a major pain to commute if you want to go out etc. There are a number of B & B's as well as hostels in the city, but even those aren't exactly cheap. If you have narrowed down the options on where you might possibly stay, let me know and I can provide further information regarding the area it is situated in.

The night life is great too, and is spread in different areas of the city. The best night life is probably around Stureplan. There are a bunch of places in a 3 - 4 block radius in this area. Most of them are high-end fancy places, and you will see crowded lines almost in front of all the places here. Another area with good night life is Sodermalm (South of the city), but not as many places as Stureplan.

If you have any specific questions, let me know and I will provide as much information as possible.

What about hostels? You can get a private room for between $30 to $50 a night. Check out the main hostel booking site like hostels.com or hostelworld.com.

Here's one for Cape Town: http://www.accommodationshop.co.za/Index.asp

They have some pretty swish pads especially if you can line up a few people to share a place.

As a caveat I did try to use this company but they were a little slow in getting back to me and I'd arranged something else in the meantime.

Best areas to stay are probably Camps Bay or Clifton.

Yes, those two areas are the best, but both are very expensive. Clifton is ridiculously overpriced. I think that David Beckham paid US$1 million to rent a villa there for the duration of the World Cup (around a month) last year. Though the four beaches are among the best city beaches in the world. They have a very European feel. Lots of hot babes tanning topless etc.

Also, Clifton doesn't really have any clubs or other nightlife, whereas Camps Bay is just a mile down the road and has a great bar/club strip right on the beach. The locals go there at sunset for after work or pre dinner drinks.

As for whether an accomodation thread is a good idea. I think it's a great idea. It's always possible other members of the board have good intel on the accomodation situation im a given city. I don't have any immediate ideas about how to prevent spamming and scams though. Unfortunately CL, for example, is full of vacation rental scams, though I have personally had success with short-term rentals posted there.

As far as Philippines goes, walking around and asking around is good. Ask people that work at hotels, or locals.

I got my apartment through a normal website that generally rents apartment by the day. The owner is an American guy and he decided he wanted to rent by the month. I got a good rate 300 euro a month for a luxury studio apartment.

What is a "normal website"? Google? Yahoo? Hulu? Froogle?
